Many cities from ancient and very ancient times still exist today. Some may have been destroyed over time, but each country still has cities with an ancient legacy. Even if we don’t go back too far, many cities that are at least two hundred to one and a half thousand years old still stand today. A question constantly comes to my mind….What is the exact secret behind the existence of the oldest cities in the world that still exist today ? Nowadays, the old cities in every country are unable to bear the burden of the growing population. As a result, these cities are becoming disfigured, threatening their very existence. Even to preserve a monument from ancient times, a lot of effort is required. So what exactly needs to be done to preserve these ancient cities.
Even if we decide to preserve a city that has been in existence for at least a thousand or one and a half thousand years, would it be possible ? When the city was established, how would they have planned it with the future in mind ? Considering the population at that time, the layout of the city might have been small, but now the same city’s boundaries have expanded. In the last  hundred years, very few new cities have been established globally. However, instead of preserving existing historia cities, they have been further expanded. In the process of making them modern, they have started to become more disfigured. ‘Cleanliness and Usage’ has become a critical issue worldwide. When we can’t afford new things, we modify the old ones. That’s exactly the state of our ancient cities. Just like we maintain an old ‘Mercedes’ after repairs as a matter of pried ! Just the same !!

प्राचीन आणि अतिप्राचीन काळातील अनेक शहरे आजही अस्तित्वात आहेत. काही काळाच्या ओघात नेस्तनाबूत झालेली असली तरी प्रत्येक देशांमधून अशी अतिप्राचीन अस्तित्वाचा वारसा असलेली शहरे आज देखील आहेत. फार प्राचीन काळ तपासला नाही तरी किमान दोनशे वर्षे ते कमाल दीड हजार वर्षांपूर्वीची अनेक शहरे आजही उभी आहेत. माझ्या मनात एक प्रश्न कायम येतो, जगात सर्वात जुनी शहरे जी आजही अस्तित्वात आहेत, त्यांच्या इतक्या वर्षांच्या अस्तित्वाचे नेमके रहस्य काय असावे ? आजमितीस सर्वच देशांमधून जुन्या शहरांना वाढत्या लोकसंख्येचा भार सहन होत नाही. त्यामुळे त्या शहरांचे विद्रुपीकरण होत त्यांच्या अस्तित्वालाच धक्का पोहचू लागला आहे. पुरातन काळाची साक्ष देणारी एखादी वास्तू  जपण्यासाठी देखील खूप प्रयत्न करावे लागतात. मग अशा पुरातन शहरांचे  अस्तित्व टिकविण्यासाठी नेमके कोणते प्रयत्न व्हायला हवेत ? एकतर किमान एक हजार ते दीड हजार वर्षापूर्वीचे अस्तित्वात असलेले शहर जरी संरक्षित करायचे ठरविले तर ते शक्य होईल का ? ते शहर जेंव्हा वसवण्यात आले त्यावेळी त्यांनी भविष्यकाळाचा विचार करून कश्या पद्धतीने नगररचना केली असेल ? त्या काळातील लोकसंख्येच्या मानाने कदाचित शहराची रचना छोटी असावी, पण त्याच शहराची रचना आता खूप विस्तारली आहे. गेल्या शंभर वर्षात नव्याने शहर वसवण्याचे कार्य खूप थोड्या संख्येने जगभरात झाले आहे. पण आहे तीच ऐतिहासिक शहरे संरक्षित न करता ती अधिक विस्तारलेली आहेत. त्याला आधुनिक बनविण्याच्या नादात ती अधिक विद्रुप होवू लागली आहेत. ‘स्वच्छता आणि वापर’ हा विषय तर जगभराचा कळीचा प्रश्न बनला आहे. नवीन वस्तू घेण्याची आपली ऐपत नसली की जुन्याच वस्तूमध्ये आपण फेरबदल करतो. बस्स, आपल्या पुरातन शहरांची हीच अवस्था झालीय. रिपेअर करत जुनी ‘मर्सिडीज’ आपण ‘प्रतिष्ठा’ म्हणून सांभाळतो ना ! अगदी तसंच !!
