निसर्ग आपल्याला खूप देतो आपण मात्र फक्त हक्क गाजवतो….!

• This is something that happened five or six years ago. During the rainy season, four or five saplings sprouted in our yard. I couldn’t figure out what these saplings were, but my wife, smita, recognized them right away. Being a farmer’s daughter, she identified them as lemon saplings. She distributed some of the saplings to acquaintances and kept just one in our yard.
• Since it was the rainy season, we didn’t have to do much. After taking root in the soil, the sapling grew well, reaching about five or six feet within a few months, transforming in to a tree. For the first two years, this tree didn’t bear any fruit. During that time, some people suggested uprooting the tree, but we had grown attached to it, as it quietly provided shade in the scorching heat.
• The tere seemed to respond to our care and love, and after two years, it behan to bear fruit. When people in the neighboehood noticed the lemons growing on the tree, it became a topic of discussion. Some people, who were too proud to ask for lemon dirictly, started sending requests through others. Lemons are quite expensive in the market during summer, but I began giving them away for free to everyone.
• Although it is just one tree, it produces more than 1,500 lemons during the season. These lemons have traveled as far as 400-500 kilometers through my friends and colleagues. Allowing the tree to grow in my yard has brought me a lot of recognition. Writers, journalists, literati, poets, and artists now receive lemons delivered to their homes, giving me a unique identity. This recognition came effortlessly. Nature give us so much in abundance, yet we only assert our rights ss giving anything in return.

• पाच-सहा वर्षांपूर्वीची गोष्ट आहे. आमच्या घराच्या अंगणात असंच पावसाळ्याच्या दिवसात चार-पाच रोपं उगवली होती. मला उगवलेली ही रोपं कशाची आहेत ? हेच समजले नव्हते. पण माझी पत्नी सौ.स्मिता हिने मात्र लगेचच ओळखले होते की ती लिंबाची रोपे आहेत म्हणून. शेतकऱ्याची मुलगी आहे ना ती ! मग तिने त्यातली काही रोपे ओळखीच्या लोकांना दिली आणि आमच्या अंगणात एकच रोप ठेवले. पावसाळा असल्याने आम्हाला फार काही करावेच लागले नाही. जमिनीत मूळ धरल्यावर काही महिन्यातच रोप चांगले पाच-सहा फूट वाढले आणि त्याचे झाडात रूपांतर झाले. पहिली दोन वर्षे झाडाने फळ दिले नाही. त्यावेळी आजूबाजूच्या लोकांनी झाड उपटून फेकण्याचा देखील सल्ला दिला होता. पण कडक उन्हात सावली देण्याचं काम निमूटपणे करणाऱ्या या लिंबाचा आम्हाला देखील लळा लागला होता.
• आमच्या प्रेमाच्या संगोपनात झाडाने देखील चांगलेच मनावर घेत दोन वर्षांनी आम्हाला फळे द्यायला सुरुवात केली. आमच्या दारातील झाडाला लागलेली लिंबाची फळे पाहून मग मात्र परिसरातील घरा-घरातून चर्चा सुरू झाली. स्वतःची प्रतिष्ठा जपणाऱ्यांना लिंबू मागायला लाज वाटायची. मग कुणाच्या तरी मार्फत आमच्याकडे लिंबाची विचारणा सुरू झाली. उन्हाळ्यात बाजारात लिंबं खूप महाग असतात. मी मात्र झाडावरची लिंबं सगळ्यांना फुकट द्यायला सुरुवात केली.
• एकच झाड आहे पण हंगामात दीड हजारावर लिंबं देते. मित्र-सहकारी वर्तुळातून ही लिंबं चारशे-पाचशे किलोमीटर अंतरापर्यंत पोहोचलीत. माझ्या दारात वाढण्याची त्याला परवानगी दिल्याच्या बदल्यात त्याने मला खूप प्रसिद्धी दिलीय. माझ्याकडून लेखक, पत्रकार, साहित्यिक, कवी, कलावंतांना घरपोच लिंबं मिळत असल्याने ही एक वेगळीच ओळख मिळाली आहे. कोणतेही परिश्रम न करता मिळालेली ही ओळख. निसर्ग किती भरभरून देतो आपल्याला. आपण मात्र फक्त हक्क गाजवतो. बदल्यात आपण काहीच देत नाही.
