“छत्रीबाहेरचा कोसळणारा पाऊस…!“

It’s natural to think, “If it’s monsoon, it’s going to rain! What’s the big deal about it?” Anyone might feel that way. But consider this: just a month ago, Dubai experienced such heavy rain that it led to flooding. In a place where rainfall is scarce, if it suddenly starts pouring heavily, it is bound to feel extraordinary, right? Now, the part of Maharashtra (India) where I live has been known for its unpredictable climate for the past two centuries. Every year, we buy umbrellas and raincoats to protect ourselves from the rain. Behind that is our optimism—hoping that this year, the rain outside the umbrella will be strong.

• In our region, all the seasons are unreliable. Whether it’s summer, winter, or monsoon, each season shows its unpredictability. When we think that this summer won’t be unbearable, that’s exactly when the thermometer rises to 45 degrees Celsius. If we predict a good winter and buy new sweaters and scarves, that’s the year winter disappears. The monsoon is no different.
• The monsoon that came after the third wave of COVID was quite good. It was said that during the pandemic, because everything was shut down as a precaution, air pollution was under control. As a result, the hole in the ozone layer was patched. Some said that because global warming had decreased, the “El Niño” phenomenon had become active. People were saying all sorts of things. But since we were stuck indoors, we couldn’t really experience the rain.
• Now, COVID has become a thing of the past. People quickly forget disasters. Industrial pollution and vehicular emissions have risen sharply, returning to their previous levels. Yet, this year, even in the Gulf region, it rained so much that it forced the Arabs to use umbrellas. If this much rain had fallen in the Amazon rainforest, at least the forest fires would have been extinguished. But no, it didn’t rain that much there. Thankfully, the Arabs in the Gulf are more practical-minded than poetic. Here, however, the rain seems to fall just to inspire poets and writers. We receive more rain in poems on paper than from the sky.
• Anyway… it’s been raining quite well this year. I started writing this article when it began pouring. Now, the rain has eased. By now, my umbrella must be thoroughly soaked. It’s time to stop writing.

पावसाळा आहे म्हटल्यावर पाऊस पडणारच ना ! त्याचं काय एव्हढं कौतुक करायचं….असं कुणालाही वाटू शकते. पण विचार करा, महिनाभरापूर्वीच दुबईला पावसाने असं झोडपले की तिथे पूरपरिस्थिती निर्माण झाली. जिथं पर्जन्यमान कमी असते तिथं अचानक पावसाने जोर धरला तर नवलाईची गोष्ट होणारच ना ! आता मी महाराष्ट्रात जिथे राहतो तो भाग हा गेल्या दोन शतकांपासूनच लहरी ऋतुमान असलेला प्रदेश म्हणून ओळखल्या जातो. आम्ही पावसापासून रक्षणासाठी छत्र्या, रेनकोट दरवर्षीच खरेदी करतो. त्यापाठीमागे आमचा आशावाद असतो. यंदा तरी छत्री बाहेरचा पाऊस जोराचा असेल.

• आमच्याकडे सगळेच ऋतू दगाबाज होतात. उन्हाळा असो, हिवाळा असो किंवा पावसाळा असो प्रत्येक ऋतू आपला लहरीपणा दाखवतोच. जेंव्हा आपल्याला वाटते की यंदाचा उन्हाळा असह्य होणार नाही. नेमके त्या वर्षी थर्मामिटरचा पारा ४५ अंश सेल्सिअसवर जाणार. यंदा थंडी चांगली पडेल म्हणून अंदाज बांधून नवीन स्वेटर, मफलर खरेदी केले की त्या वर्षी थंडी गायब होते. पावसाळ्याचे देखील तसेच.
• कोरोनाच्या तिसऱ्या लाटे नंतर आलेला पावसाळा चांगला होता. तेंव्हा सांगितले गेले की कोरोनाकाळात खबरदारीचा उपाय म्हणून सगळंच बंद असल्याने हवेचे प्रदूषण नियंत्रणात आले. त्यामुळे आकाशात त्या ओझोनच्या फाटलेल्या छिद्राला ठिगळ लागले. तर काहीजण सांगत होते की, ग्लोबल वॉर्मिंग कमी झाल्याने “अल निनो” सक्रिय झाला. कुणी काय सांगतंय तर कुणी काय सांगतंय. घरातच बसून असल्याने पाऊस काही अंगावर घेता आला नाही.
• आता तर कोरोना इतिहासजमा झालाय. माणसं आपत्ती झटकन विसरतात. पुन्हा औद्योगिक प्रदूषण, वाहनांचे प्रदूषण झपाट्याने वाढत पूर्वपदावर आले आहे. तरी देखील यंदा आखाती प्रदेशात पावसाने अरबी लोकांना हातात छत्र्या धरायला लावल्या. एव्हढा पाऊस त्या अमेझॉनच्या जंगलात पडला तर जंगलाला लागलेली आग तरी विझली असती. बरं ! पावसाला हे समजत नाही का ? पण नाही, तिथे नाही एव्हढा पडला. तरी बरं आखातातले अरबी लोकं कविमनाचे थोडे आणि व्यापारी वृत्तीचे जास्त आहेत. आमच्याकडे तर पाऊस निव्वळ कवी आणि साहित्यिकांना जगविण्यासाठीच पडतो. आमच्याकडे जितका पाऊस आकाशातून पडतो त्यापेक्षा अधिक पाऊस कागदावरच्या कवितेतून पडतो.
• काहीही असो….यंदा पाऊस चांगलाच पडतोय. पाऊस पडायला सुरुवात झाली तेंव्हा आर्टिकल लिहायला घेतलं होतं. आता जोर कमी झालाय. एव्हाना छत्री चांगलीच भिजली असेल. बंद करायला हवी……
