“आपलेच जुने फोटो सापडणे हा तर आनंदोत्सव…!”

No matter what age group you’re in, if you happen to find a photo from a particular moment taken even ten years ago, not only does your entire day fill with joy, but that long-forgotten moment from a decade ago flashes vividly in your memory like the climax of a movie. I often do this. Whenever I feel very uneasy or lonely, I search for old photos, especially those that are hard to find. I reach out to many people for help in finding them. And eventually, I do get that photo. In the end, celebrations of joy don’t happen on their own; we have to seek out those joyful moments ourselves.

• This happened just last Wednesday. My younger brother, Avinash Hingane, who lives in Paithan (Dist. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), sent me photos over WhatsApp that were a whopping 32 years old. He immediately called me to reminisce. Coincidentally, I was interviewing a client for a newspaper at that time. After I finished the interview, I called my brother back, and he simply replied, “Just open WhatsApp,” before abruptly ending the call.
• My brother knows how obsessed I am with old, especially lost, photos, so he sent them right away. That afternoon, when I had some free time from work, I eagerly opened WhatsApp to view the photos.
• Among them, I found two photos from Goa, taken 32 years ago. In 1992, I had won the Best Director award in the final round of the Maharashtra State Government’s State Drama Competition. The award ceremony was held in Goa, and these photos were from that event.
• Before I could even reflect on how I looked in my youth, the entire moment of receiving the award came to life in my mind. I had received the award from the hands of prominent figures—renowned Marathi writer-poet Vasant Bapat, the then-Cultural Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh, and the then-Chief Minister of Goa, Pratapsingh Rane.
• After accepting the award and stepping down from the stage, I recalled how the dignitaries praised me for being the youngest director. They had lovingly patted my back in appreciation. As a young theater director from a small city like Solapur, they took a special interest in my achievement. It’s remarkable how many memories can be hidden within a single photograph.

तुम्ही सध्या कोणत्याही वयोगटात असाल तरी देखील अगदी दहा वर्षांपूर्वी काढलेला एखादा विशिष्ट प्रसंगातील फोटो तुम्हाला जर सापडला तर संपूर्ण दिवस तुमचा नुसताच आनंदात जात नाही तर दहा वर्षांपूर्वीचा विस्मरणात गेलेला प्रसंग एखाद्या सिनेमाच्या क्लायमॅक्स प्रमाणे ठळकपणे तुमच्या आठवणींच्या कप्प्यात उघडतो. मी हा प्रयोग वारंवार करतो. जेंव्हा खूप अस्वस्थ वाटते, एकाकी वाटते तेंव्हा जुन्या फोटोंचा विशेषतः न सापडणाऱ्या फोटोंचा शोध घेतो. त्यासाठी अनेकांना संपर्क साधतो. त्यांची मदत घेवून तो फोटो मिळवतोच. शेवटी आनंदोत्सव हा आपोआप घडत नसतो. त्यासाठी आनंदाचे क्षण आपणच शोधायचे असतात.

• बुधवारचीच गोष्ट आहे. माझे पैठण (जि.-छत्रपती संभाजीनगर) येथे राहणारे धाकटे बंधू अविनाश हिंगणे यांनी मला व्हॉट्स अपवर तब्बल ३२ वर्ष जुने असलेले फोटो पाठविले. आठवणीसाठी मला लगेच कॉल केला. नेमका मी त्यावेळी वृत्तपत्रासाठी एका क्लाएंटचा इंटरव्ह्यू घेत होतो. माझा इंटरव्ह्यू पूर्ण झाल्यावर मी बंधूंना कॉल करून विचारल्यावर त्याने फक्त “व्हॉट्स अप उघड” एव्हढेच त्रोटक उत्तर देत कॉल कट केला.
• मला जुन्या फोटोंचे, त्यातल्या त्यात हरवलेल्या फोटोंचे फार वेड आहे हे बंधुला माहीत असल्याने त्याने ते फोटो लगेचच पाठवले. दुपारी कामातून मोकळा झाल्यावर व्हॉट्सअप उघडून अधीरतेने पहिल्यांदा फोटो पाहिले.
• त्यात ३२ वर्षांपूर्वीचे गोवा येथील दोन फोटो मिळाले. १९९२ साली महाराष्ट्र राज्य शासनाच्या राज्य नाट्य स्पर्धेत अंतिम फेरीत मला सर्वोत्कृष्ट दिग्दर्शनाचे पारितोषिक मिळाले होते. हा पारितोषिक वितरण समारंभ गोव्यात झाला होता. त्यावेळी काढलेले फोटो होते.
• फोटो न्याहाळताना आपण तरुण वयात कसे दिसत होतो हा विचार मनात डोकावयाच्या आधी पुरस्कार मिळतानाचा तो प्रसंग डोळ्यासमोर आला. मराठीतील ज्येष्ठ लेखक-कवी वसंत बापट, महाराष्ट्राचे तत्कालीन सांस्कृतिक मंत्री विलासराव देशमुख, आणि गोव्याचे तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री प्रतापसिंह राणे यांच्या हस्ते मला पुरस्कार मिळाला होता.
• पुरस्कार स्वीकारून व्यासपीठावरून खाली उतरल्यावर सर्वात कमी वयाचा दिग्दर्शक म्हणून उपस्थित मान्यवरांकडून झालेले कौतुक आठवले. त्यावेळी मान्यवरांनी प्रेमाने पाठ थोपटली होती. सोलापूर सारख्या छोट्या शहरातून आलेला युवा नाट्य दिग्दर्शक म्हणून त्यांना माझे विशेष कौतुक वाटले होते. एका फोटोमध्ये किती आठवणी दडलेल्या असतात.
