“इतिहास हा नेहमीच तुम्हाला जागृत ठेवत असतो….!”

What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?

The identity of any region or city is not determined by its buildings. Rather, it is shaped by the natural environment and the lifestyle of the people living there. People’s way of life reflects their history, civilization, and culture. I am a resident of Solapur, a city counted among the top five major cities in the state of Maharashtra, India. This multilingual and multi-religious city’s history is equally inspiring. During the time when India was under British rule, the city of Solapur achieved the remarkable feat of tearing down the “Union Jack” and enjoying freedom. Therefore, we take pride in our history and cultural heritage.

• My city, Solapur, in Maharashtra, is unique as it borders the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, making it a multi-religious and multilingual city. It is home to people of various faiths including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and Jains. The population speaks a variety of languages such as Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Telugu, along with Gujarati, Marwadi, Gormati, and Dakhni. The culture and civilization here, which showcase unity in diversity, are certainly attractive to everyone.
• During British rule, while the entire country was under colonial control, the citizens of this city, with a legacy of revolutionary thought, participated in Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement. In 1930, they revolted against the British and freed the city for three days. To crush this uprising, the British imposed Martial Law. At that time, only two cities in undivided India had Martial Law imposed: one was Solapur, and the other was Peshawar, which became a major city in Pakistan after partition.
• The ancient history of Solapur is evidenced by the Bhuikot Fort, built in the 13th century, and Hemadpanthi temples that were constructed even earlier. The present-day Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Lake in Solapur, according to British records, is approximately three and a half thousand years old. It is believed that this lake may have formed due to a meteor impact, a theory proposed by British officer Hume.
• Solapur’s existence dates back to ancient times. Pandharpur, considered a spiritual paradise and located near Solapur, has hosted the “Ashadhi” and “Kartiki” Ekadashi pilgrimages for nearly 1,200 years. The “Wari,” where devotees walk to Pandharpur to see Lord Vitthal, has a thousand-year-old history. The management of this pilgrimage, which amazes the world, is a marvel. Solapur has produced many saints and spiritual leaders inspired by the devotion to Lord Vitthal. This spiritual legacy, guiding society, is our cultural heritage.

कोणत्याही प्रदेशाची किंवा शहराची ओळख ही तिथल्या इमारतींवरून ठरत नसते. तर तिथला निसर्ग आणि तिथले लोकजीवन कसे आहे ? यावरून ठरत असते. तर लोकजीवन हे त्यांचा इतिहास, सभ्यता आणि संस्कृती सांगत असतो. भारतातील महाराष्ट्र राज्यात पहिल्या पाच प्रमुख शहरांमध्ये गणल्या जाणाऱ्या सोलापूर शहराचा मी रहिवासी आहे. बहुभाषी आणि बहुधर्मी असलेल्या या शहराचा इतिहास देखील तेव्हढाच प्रेरणादायी आहे. देश ब्रिटिशांच्या गुलामगिरीत असताना सोलापूर शहराने “युनियन जॅक” फेकून स्वातंत्र्य उपभोगण्याचा पराक्रम केला आहे. त्यामुळे आम्हाला आमच्या इतिहास आणि सांस्कृतिक वारशाचा अभिमान आहे.

• माझे सोलापूर शहर हे महाराष्ट्रातील एक असे शहर आहे जे कर्नाटक, आंध्रप्रदेश राज्याच्या सीमेलगत असल्याने बहुधर्मीय आणि बहुभाषिक आहे. या शहरात हिंदू, मुस्लिम, ख्रिश्चन, बौद्ध, जैन धर्मीय लोक राहतात. तर मराठी, हिंदी, उर्दू, कानडी, तेलुगू भाषेसह गुजराती, मारवाडी, गोरमाटी, दखनी भाषा बोलणारा समाज आहे. विविधतेत एकता दाखविणारी इथली सभ्यता आणि संस्कृती निश्चितच सर्वांना आकर्षित करणारी आहे.
• ब्रिटिशांच्या गुलामगिरीत सगळा देश असताना महात्मा गांधी यांनी पुकारलेल्या असहकार आंदोलनाचा भाग म्हणून क्रांतिकारी विचारांचा वारसा असलेल्या या शहरातील नागरिकांनी १९३० मध्ये ब्रिटिशांविरुद्ध बंड पुकारून शहराला तीन दिवस स्वतंत्र केले होते. ब्रिटिशांना हा स्वातंत्र्याचा उठाव चिरडून टाकण्यासाठी “मार्शल लॉ” पुकारला होता. त्याकाळी ब्रिटिशांनी आंदोलन चिरडून टाकण्यासाठी अखंड भारतात “मार्शल लॉ” लागू केलेली दोनच शहरे होती. एक म्हणजे सोलापूर आणि दुसरे शहर “पेशावर”, जे फाळणीनंतर पाकिस्तानचे प्रमुख शहर बनले आहे.
• सोलापूर शहरात तेराव्या शतकात बांधण्यात आलेला भुईकोट किल्ला, त्याही पूर्वी बांधल्या गेलेली हेमाडपंथी मंदिरे हे आमच्या पुरातन इतिहासाची साक्ष देतात. सोलापूर शहरातील सध्याचा छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज तलाव हा ब्रिटिश दफ्तरातील नोंदीनुसार जवळपास साडेतीन हजार वर्षे जुना आहे. उल्कापातामधून हा तलाव तयार झाला असावा असे मत ब्रिटिश अधिकारी ह्युम याने मांडल्याची नोंद आहे. एकूणच सोलापूर शहराचे अस्तित्व हे पुरातन काळापासून आहे.
• भूवैकुंठ समजल्या जाणारे पंढरपूर हे सोलापूरच्या जवळच असल्याने “आषाढी” आणि “कार्तिकी” एकादशीची वारी हा अध्यात्मिक वारसा जवळपास बाराशे वर्षे जुना आहे. पंढरपूरच्या विठ्ठलाच्या दर्शनासाठी पायी चालत निघणारी “वारी” ला हजार वर्षांचा इतिहास आहे. जगाला आश्चर्यात टाकणारे व्यवस्थापन या “वारी”मध्ये पहायला मिळते. विठ्ठल भक्तीमुळे अनेक संतमहात्मे सोलापूरच्या भूमीत तयार झालेत. समाजाला दिशा देणारा हा अध्यात्मिक ठेवा हाच आमचा सांस्कृतिक वारसा आहे.
