“रविवार म्हणजे घरातल्या प्रलंबित कामांचा दिवस….!”

What’s your #1 priority tomorrow?

“Sunday is a day off. If someone asks me the day before, ‘What’s your top priority for tomorrow?’ I tell them, ‘Buddy, we only get one day in the week to look after the household needs.’ Of course, being in the news industry, there’s no guarantee I can fully enjoy a Sunday off. If I get a call from colleagues at the office during the day, I know that today’s holiday is not in my destiny. But when I do get a day off, I’m ready to complete all the pending household tasks.”

• I never really had to do tasks like cleaning the house or washing clothes. But picking up two to three months’ worth of old newspapers and taking them to the recycling center was my job. In the morning, I’d run small errands like getting vegetables from the market.
• After lunch and an afternoon nap, around 4 PM, I’d refresh myself and head to the mart for grocery shopping. Carrying two bags full of groceries, I’d return home.
• In the evening, I would either have detailed discussions with my wife about the events of the past week or just chat. Since Sunday is mostly a day of spending, I wouldn’t bother balancing the accounts. After dinner, I’d browse through my phone and make calls to long-lost friends from my phonebook just to pass the time. Then, at night, I’d start writing posts, especially for my blog. When sleep finally caught up with me around midnight, I’d make a list of the tasks to prioritize on Monday and drift into a deep sleep.
• This is how a middle-class Sunday break feels – limited, yet enjoyable.

रविवार म्हणजे सुट्टीचा दिवस. आदल्या दिवशीच जर मला कुणी विचारले की, काय मग उद्या तुमचे क्रमांक एक चे प्राधान्य काय आहे ? तर मी त्याला सांगतो की, बाबारे….आठवड्यातून एकच दिवस मिळतोय, घरात काय हवं-काय नको ते बघायला. अर्थात वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रात असल्याने रविवारी सुट्टी उपभोगता येईलच याची खात्री नसते. दिवसभरात कधीही मोबाईलवर कार्यालयातील सहकाऱ्यांचा कॉल आला की समजायचं आजची सुट्टी आपल्या नशिबात नाही. पण जेंव्हा मिळते तेंव्हा घरातली पेंडिंग कामे पूर्ण करण्यासाठी सज्ज असतो.

• घरातील साफसफाईची कामे किंवा कपडे धुण्याची कामे कधी माझ्या वाट्याला आली नाहीत. पण न्यूजपेपरची साचलेली दोन-तीन महिन्याची रद्दी उचलून रद्दी डेपोकडे नेवून घालायची. घरी सकाळच्या सत्रात मंडईतून भाजी आणणे अशी किरकोळ कामे उरकायची.
• दुपारच्या जेवणानंतर वामकुक्षी नंतर चार वाजण्याच्या सुमारास जडावलेल्या शरीराला पुन्हा ताजेतवाने करत ग्रोसरी खरेदीसाठी मार्ट गाठायचे. दोन्ही हातात दोन पिशव्या भरून सामान घेवून घरी परतायचे.
• मग संध्याकाळी पत्नीसोबत आठवडाभराच्या घडामोडींवर सविस्तर चर्चा करायची किंवा नुसत्याच गप्पा मारायच्या. रविवार हा नुसता खर्चाचा दिवस असल्याने हिशोब लावत बसायचं नाही. रात्री जेवल्यानंतर मोबाईल चाळत फोनबुकमधील निद्रिस्त मित्रांना कॉल करून टाईमपास करायचा. मग रात्री पुन्हा सोशल मिडियासाठी पोस्ट लिखाण करायचे. विशेषतः ब्लॉगसाठी लेखन करायचे. मध्यरात्री झोप डोळ्यावर दाटून आलेली असताना सोमवारच्या प्राधान्याने करावयाच्या कामांची यादी करताच गाढ झोपी जायचं. मध्यमवर्गीयांच्या रविवारच्या सुट्टीची मजा ही मर्यादित अशीच असते.
