“होय, मी भित्रेपणाने जगतो, कारण मी सर्वसामान्य आहे…!”

What principles define how you live?

The life of an ordinary, middle-class person is confined within predetermined rules. They never attempt to act outside of these rules, because breaking them requires personal strength and support from others—neither of which are within their reach. No matter how unfairly they are treated, they endure it quietly, believing it to be a matter of principle. But in reality, it’s fear, because their so-called principles have no impact on anyone else. That’s why I clarify right from the start: I live in fear because I am an ordinary, middle-class person.

• The ordinary, middle-class person, living with the mindset of “do your work and stay out of trouble,” can be recognized in any country, even in a crowd. This is because, even in a crowd, it’s the middle-class individual who makes a weak effort to follow the rules. A middle-class person, who has never set foot in a police station in their life, is terrified even of a traffic cop managing traffic. When a traffic police officer blows a whistle to stop a speeding vehicle, it’s often the middle-class person who stops first, startled, even though they weren’t the one at fault. Despite having a valid license and all documents in order, the middle-class individual is so scared that their throat goes dry and they can barely speak when dealing with the police.
• For the middle-class, the life goal is to do any job they get with full honesty, manage household expenses frugally, fulfill their spouse’s and children’s dreams within their means, and in old age, pray to God that their children take care of them. Knowing that living outside the rules is beyond their ability, they carry the belief that breaking rules is a crime. They call this adherence to rules “principles.”
• I am a middle-class person. All the traits mentioned are deeply ingrained in me. Even though we middle-class people live so submissively, both the poor and the elite in society greatly admire us. Though we follow rules out of fear, the class below us sees us as idealistic. The elite, on the other hand, admire our patience in doing our work without any rebellion. Just as they see rule-breaking as an act of bravery, they find it fitting to appoint a middle-class person as a servant.
• If the master is a thief, we, the middle-class people, will even honestly manage the accounts of the stolen wealth as loyal servants. This is why we are loved by both the lower and upper classes, and we consider ourselves fortunate for it. Since we mask our fear with a veneer of principles, the world views us as straightforward and principled, and we take pride in this perception.

सर्वसामान्य, मध्यमवर्गीय माणसाचं जगणं हे आखून आणि नेमून दिलेल्या नियमातच असतं. तो जरासुद्धा नियमबाह्य वागण्याचा प्रयत्न करत नसतो. कारण नियम मोडण्यासाठी स्वतःची शक्ती आणि इतरांचे पाठबळ लागते. या दोन्हीही गोष्टी त्याच्या आवाक्यात नसतात. मग कितीही अन्यायकारक वागणूक मिळाली तरी तो निमूटपणे सहन करत जगत असतो. त्याला तो तत्ववादी समजत असतो. वास्तवात तो भित्रेपणा असतो. कारण त्याच्या तत्ववादी असण्याचा इतरांवर काडीमात्रही परिणाम होत नसतो. म्हणूनच मी सुरुवातीलाच स्पष्ट करतो की, मी भित्रेपणाने जगतो, कारण मी सर्वसामान्य मध्यमवर्गीय माणूस आहे.

• “आपण भले आणि आपले काम भले” या वृत्तीने सरळमार्गी जगणारा मध्यमवर्गीय माणूस हा जगातल्या कोणत्याही देशात गेलात तरी गर्दीतही ओळखू येतो. कारण गर्दीतही नियम पाळण्याचा दुबळा प्रयत्न करणारा हा मध्यमवर्गीयच असतो. आयुष्यात कधीच पोलीस स्टेशनची पायरी न चढलेला मध्यमवर्गीय माणूस रहदारी नियंत्रित करणाऱ्या वाहतूक पोलिसाला देखील प्रचंड घाबरत असतो. शेजारून भरधाव वेगात जाणाऱ्या वाहनचालकाला जरी ट्रॅफिक पोलिसाने शिट्टी वाजवून थांबायचा इशारा केला तरी दचकून पहिल्यांदा मध्यमवर्गीय माणूस थांबतो. वाहतुकीच्या नियमानुसार परवाना आणि सगळी कागदपत्रे बरोबर असतानाही ज्याचा पोलिसाबरोबर बोलताना भीतीने घसा कोरडा पडतो, आवाजच बाहेर पडत नाही तो मध्यमवर्गीय माणूस असतो.
• आयुष्यभर जगण्याचे ध्येय हे मिळेल ती नोकरी इमानेइतबारे करणे, काटकसरीने घरखर्च भागवणे, पत्नी आणि आपल्या मुलांची स्वप्ने आपल्या ऐपतीप्रमाणे पूर्ण करणे आणि वृद्धापकाळात आपल्या मुलांनी आपल्याला सांभाळावे म्हणून परमेश्वराकडे याचना करणारा हा माध्यमावर्गीयच असतो. नियमबाह्य जगणे आपल्याला झेपणारे नाही हे माहीत असल्यामुळेच नियम तोडणे हा गुन्हा असल्याचा सिध्दांत तोच डोक्यावर घेऊन मिरवत असतो. याला तो तत्ववादी म्हणत असतो.
• मी मध्यमवर्गीय आहे. वर्णन केल्याप्रमाणे सर्व लक्षणे शंभरटक्के माझ्यामध्ये अगदी ठासून भरलेली आहेत. आम्ही मध्यमवर्गीय इतके लाचार होवून जगत असलो तरी देखील समाजातील गरीब आणि उच्चभ्रू वर्गामध्ये आमचे प्रचंड कौतुक केले जाते. आम्ही जरी भित्रेपणामुळे नियम पाळत असलो तरी आमच्यापेक्षा गरीब असलेल्या वर्गाला आम्ही आदर्शवादी वाटत असतो. तर कुठलेही बंड न करता निमूटपणे काम करण्याची आमची सोशिकता उच्चभ्रू लोकांना आवडते. नियम मोडणे हे जसे त्यांना शौर्याचे काम वाटते, त्याचा पद्धतीने मध्यमवर्गीयाला नोकर म्हणून नियुक्त करायला त्यांना आवडते.
• मालक चोर असेल तर त्याने चोरून आणलेल्या धनाचा देखील नोकर म्हणून आम्ही मध्यमवर्गीय लोक प्रामाणिकपणे हिशोब ठेवतो. त्यामुळे समाजातील दोन्ही वर्गांना आम्ही प्रिय असल्याने आम्ही स्वतःला भाग्यवान समजतो. आमच्या भित्रेपणालाच आम्ही तत्वांचा मुलामा दिलेला असल्याने जग आम्हाला सरळमार्गी आणि तत्ववादी समजते याचाच आम्हाला अभिमान वाटतो.
