“मराठी साहित्यातील “आधुनिक वाल्मिकी”च्या गावाकडच्या वास्तूचे दर्शन…!”

“If one gets the sudden opportunity to visit the ancestral village and abode of a great late literary figure whose writings have influenced three to four generations, it becomes nothing less than a pilgrimage for literature lovers. The same values and teachings that enriched the lives of my parents through the writings of this literary giant were passed on to us, and we have shared them with the next generation. I had the fortune of visiting ‘Bamanacha Patra,’ the farmhouse of the ‘Modern Valmiki’ of the Marathi literary world, the late Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar (Gadima), located in the village of Madgule.”

• When days start to feel monotonous, I often feel like taking a day trip somewhere. Last Wednesday (October 16), my dear friend Sanjay Rupnar and I decided to visit a temple, so we set out early in the morning with his car. Another friend, Vishal Patil, also joined us. We first visited the Siddhanath Temple in Kharasundi (Taluka Atpadi) in the Sangli district for a morning darshan. From there, we planned to visit the newly built Riddhi-Siddhi Ganesh Temple in Mangalvedha, taking the route via Sangola. As we were heading towards Sangola, we passed through a village called Madgule. The name sounded familiar to me. Within moments, it struck me – this is the village of the modern-day Valmiki of Marathi literature, G.D. Madgulkar. We slowed the car down and lowered the window for inquiries, only to spot a signboard right in front of us that read “Bamanacha Patra.” That confirmed we were at the right place.
• At the corner, we saw four people. Before we could ask them for directions, they gestured for us to take the car straight into the fields. It seems like the villagers are accustomed to outsiders visiting for this reason.
• In the fields, there was a charming two-room house with a tiled roof. Two women were working in the fields, and as soon as the gate opened, a young man in his twenties, Sumit Mandale, came forward to greet us.
• Recognizing the purpose of our visit, Sumit immediately began providing us with information. He mentioned that no one from the Madgulkar family lives in the village anymore. However, their ancestral home still stands here, along with 40 acres of farmland. Pointing to a wooden table, he explained that G.D. Madgulkar used to sit here and write. It was at this very table that he composed many songs, poems, stories, and screenplays. He also told us that the epic “Geet Ramayan” was written here in this room.
• I listened in awe, overwhelmed by the significance of the moment. It felt as though my heart was overflowing with the fulfillment of having had darshan of my deity.
• G.D. Madgulkar and the Marathi people share an unbreakable bond, as I can clearly state here. The songs from “Geet Ramayan” have left a deep impression on generations of Marathi families. My father used to organize public performances of “Geet Ramayan.” In fact, our family has always revered G.D. Madgulkar as a deity. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet him in person, as I was only ten years old when he passed away.
• As I grew older, I came to understand his divinity through his literary works. Another remarkable aspect is that the Mandale-Naik family, now in their fourth generation, continues to care for the Madgulkar estate and farmland as an act of devotion. Sumit’s great-grandfather, Bapu Naik, was a trusted servant of G.D. Madgulkar, and this tradition of service has been passed down through generations. Sumit proudly mentioned that they belong to the Ramoshi caste.
• None of us have ever seen God directly, but we visit temples because the places sanctified by His presence hold special significance. This is exactly how I felt visiting this place.

ज्या साहित्यिकाच्या लेखनाने तीन-चार पिढ्यांवर संस्कार घडविले आहेत, अशा दिवंगत थोर साहित्यिकाच्या मुळगावाला, त्याच्या वास्तूला भेट देण्याचा जर अचानक योग जुळून आला तर साहित्यप्रेमींसाठी ही तर देवदर्शनाचीच पर्वणी ठरते. माझ्या आई-वडिलांनी ज्या साहित्यिकाच्या संस्काररूपी लेखनातून आमचे जीवन समृद्ध केले तोच संस्कार आम्ही आमच्या पुढच्या पिढीला दिला असे मराठी साहित्यविश्वातील “आधुनिक वाल्मिकी” कै. गजानन दिगंबर माडगूळकर (गदिमा) यांच्या माडगुळे या गावातील शेतावर असलेल्या “बामणाचा पत्रा” या वास्तूला भेट देण्याचा योग आला.

• खूप कंटाळवाणे दिवस सुरू झालेत असं वाटू लागलं की कुठेतरी एक दिवसाची ट्रिप करून यावे असं वाटतं. परवा बुधवारी (१६ ऑक्टोबर रोजी) माझा जिवलग मित्र संजय रुपनर आणि मी कुठेतरी जायचं म्हणून भल्या पहाटे त्याची कार घेवून देवदर्शनाला निघालो. सोबतीला विशाल पाटील हा आणखी एक मित्र मिळाला. सांगली जिल्ह्यातील खरसुंडी (ता.-आटपाडी) येथील सिध्दनाथ मंदिरात सकाळीच दर्शन घेतले. तिथून मंगळवेढ्यातील नव्याने झालेल्या रिद्धी-सिद्धी गणेश मंदिराला जायचे म्हणून सांगोला मार्गे निघालो. सांगोल्याकडे जात असताना माडगुळे हे गाव लागले. मला हे नाव ओळखीचे वाटले. काही क्षणातच डोक्यात लख्ख प्रकाश पडला. अरे, हे तर साहित्य क्षेत्रातील आधुनिक वाल्मिकी ग.दि.माडगूळकर यांचे गाव. गाडीचे स्पीड कमी करून चौकशीसाठी खिडकीची काच खाली की तर समोरच “बामणाचा पत्रा” असा बोर्ड दिसला. हेच ते ठिकाण याची निश्चिती झाली.
• कोपऱ्यावर चार माणसे दिसली. त्यांना विचारायच्या आतच त्यांनी इशारा करून सरळ शेतात गाडी न्यायला सांगितली. गावातल्या लोकांना बाहेरचा माणूस कशासाठी येतो ? हे बहुदा सवयीचे असावे.
• शेतात एक छानसं दोन खोल्यांचं कौलारू घर दिसलं. दोन महिला शेतात काम करत होत्या. तर गेट उघडताच सुमित मंडले हा विशीतला मुलगा स्वागताला समोर आला.
• त्याने आम्ही कशासाठी आलोय हे ओळखूनच लगेचच माहिती द्यायला सुरुवात केली. माडगूळकरांचे आता इथे गावात कुणीच रहात नाहीत. गावात त्यांचा राहाता वाडा आहे. त्यांची ४० एकर शेती आहे. गदिमा इथेच या खोलीत बसून लेखन करायचे असं सांगत त्याने एक लाकडी टेबल दाखवला. यावरच त्यांनी अनेक गीते, कविता, कथा, पटकथा लिहिल्यात. मराठीमधील “गीत रामायण” हे महाकाव्य त्यांनी इथेच बसून लिहिल्याचे सांगितले.
• मी मात्र ही माहिती भारावलेल्या स्थितीत ऐकत होतो. मला माझ्या देवाचे दर्शन झाल्याची सार्थकता माझ्या हृदयातून ओसंडत होती.
• ग.दि.माडगूळकर आणि मराठी माणसांचे एक अतूट असे नाते आहे असं मी याठिकाणी स्पष्ट या करिता करतो, कारण प्रत्येक मराठी माणसांच्या घरात गीत रामायणातील गाण्यामुळे संस्कारित झालेली पिढी आपल्याला दिसते. माझे वडील तर गीत रामायणाचे जाहीर कार्यक्रम करायचे. आमच्या कुटुंबाचेच गदिमा हे दैवत होते. मला त्यांना प्रत्यक्ष भेटता आले नाही. कारण त्यांचे निधन झाले त्यावेळी मी अवघा दहा वर्षाचा होतो.
• पुढे मोठा झाल्यावर त्यांच्या साहित्यकृतींतून त्यांचे देवत्व कळाले. आणखी एक महत्वाचे आज त्यांची गावाकडची शेती आणि घराची देखभाल करणारे हे मंडले-नाईक कुटुंब आहे त्यांची चौथी पिढी ही सेवा भक्ती समजून करत आहे. सुमित मंडले याचे पणजोबा बापू नाईक हे गदिमांचे विश्वासू सेवक त्यांच्यापासून ही सेवा सुरू आहे. मंडले हे जातीने रामोशी हे सुमित मंडले याने आवर्जून सांगितले.
• देवाला आपण प्रत्यक्ष कुणीच पाहिलेले नसते. पण त्याच्या वास्तव्याने पवित्र झालेले ठिकाण म्हणूनच आपण मंदिरात जात असतो ना !
