What was your favorite subject in school?

It is said that those who know their past are bound to have a bright present and future. In other words, people who know who their ancestors were always remember them and, while living in the present, keep an eye on their bright future. This was taught to us so effectively by our teachers in school that even as I near the age of sixty, it remains firmly etched in my memory. This very statement made me fall in love with the subject of “History” during my school days, because it is history that reminds us of our ancestors.

• The citizens of any country that has suffered foreign invasions and bondage have understood the importance of history. It is this very history that reminded them of their brave ancestors and instilled in them the morale to sacrifice their lives for freedom. The current generation, which enjoys freedom after being freed from slavery, must at least recognize that history is not merely a collection of interesting and fictional stories, but a mirror that clearly reflects the traces of existence with more truth and reality.
• When I was a child in school, learning about the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, it initially seemed like a fictional yet fascinating story. But when I saw the forts that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had built on the peaks of extremely rugged mountainous regions during a school trip, I started believing in the truthfulness of history. That’s when history became a subject I liked.
• As I grew older, I developed a passion for deeply understanding the truth behind historical events. There is much debate about the history of ancient or prehistoric times because this history is rarely found in written form. Due to the lack of written language, this history was passed down orally from one generation to another for thousands of years, and thus, it has become distorted in many places. However, the history of mankind after the development of written language seems clearer and more factual.
• The medieval period of history appears somewhat unbelievable. The reason for this is that it was the era of monarchy around the world. As a result, historians, who worked for kings or wrote with the intent of gaining the king’s favor, narrated history that often praised the king. Despite the flattery in these writings, the events they describe actually took place.
• Thus, sometimes, by overlooking the exaggerated portrayal of history and focusing on the sequence of events, we can shed light on the truth regarding our ancestors’ way of life, their thought processes, and their passion for living. This is why history remains a subject that many people enjoy.

“इतिहासच आपल्याला आठवण करून देतो आपल्या पूर्वजांची…!”

ज्यांना आपला भूतकाळ माहीत आहे, त्यांचा वर्तमानकाळ आणि भविष्यकाळ निश्चितच उज्ज्वल असतो, असं म्हणतात. म्हणजेच ज्यांना आपले पूर्वज कोण होते ? हे माहीत असतं ते लोक नेहमीच आपल्या पूर्वजांचे स्मरण करत वर्तमानात जगत असताना आपल्या उज्ज्वल भविष्यकाळाचा वेध घेत असतात. लहानपणी शाळेत हे शिक्षकांनी इतक्या प्रभावशाली पद्धतीने शिकवले होते की आजही वयाच्या साठीच्या जवळ जात असताना पक्के लक्षात राहिले आहे. कारण या वाक्यामुळेच मला शाळेत असताना “इतिहास” हा विषय आवडू लागला. कारण आपल्या पूर्वजांची आठवण आपल्याला इतिहासच करून देतो.

• ज्या-ज्या देशांनी परकीय आक्रमणे आणि पारतंत्र्य भोगलेले आहे, त्या-त्या देशातील नागरिकांना इतिहासाचे महत्व पटलेले आहे. कारण या इतिहासानेच त्यांना त्यांच्या पराक्रमी पूर्वजांचे स्मरण करून देत स्वातंत्र्य मिळविण्यासाठी प्राणांची आहुती देण्याचे मनोबल तयार केले. गुलामगिरीतून सुटका करून घेत आज स्वातंत्र्य उपभोगत असलेल्या पिढीला तरी निदान इतिहास हा निव्वळ रंजक आणि कल्पित कथांची कादंबरी नसून तो एक अस्तित्वाच्या खुणा अधिक सत्य आणि वास्तवतेने स्पष्ट करणारा आरसा असल्याचे मान्य करावेच लागेल.
• लहानपणी शाळेत असताना स्वराज्याचे संस्थापक छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज यांचा जीवनपट शिकताना सुरुवातीला ती नुसतीच एक काल्पनिक पण रंजक कथा वाटली. पण जेंव्हा शाळेच्या सहलीच्या माध्यमातून छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांनी अतिशय दुर्गम डोंगराळ भागात डोंगर माथ्यावर बांधलेले किल्ले पाहिले, तेंव्हा मात्र इतिहासाच्या सत्यांशावर विश्वास बसला. मग “इतिहास” हा विषय आवडीचा झाला.
• पुढे तरुणपणात इतिहासकालीन घटनांच्या सत्यतेविषयी सखोल माहिती मिळविण्याचा छंद जडला. पुराणकालीन किंवा प्राचीन काळाच्या इतिहासबाबत बराच वादंग असतो. कारण हा इतिहास फारसा लिखित स्वरूपात मिळत नाही. तो इतिहास भाषेची लिपी तयार नसल्याने हजारो वर्षांपासून एका पिढीने दुसऱ्या पिढीला तोंडी कथास्वरूपात सांगितलेला आहे. त्यामुळे तो बहुतांश ठिकाणी अपभ्रंशीत झालेला आहे. मात्र भाषेची लिपी तयार झाल्यानंतरचा मानवाचा इतिहास अधिक स्पष्ट आणि सत्य वाटतो.
• मध्ययुगीन कालखंडातील इतिहास हा जरा अविश्वसनीय वाटतो. त्याचे कारण जगभरात राजेशाहीचा हा कालखंड होता. त्यामुळे राजाच्या पदरी नोकरी करणाऱ्या किंवा राजाची मर्जी संपादन करून “लाभ” मिळविण्याच्या उद्देशाने इतिहासकारांनी तो लिहिलेला असल्याने तो आपल्या राजाची स्तुती करणारा असाच इतिहास सांगत असला तरी त्यातील घटना ह्या वास्तवात घडलेल्या होत्या.
• म्हणूनच काहीवेळा इतिहासातील अतिरंजक मांडणीकडे दुर्लक्ष करून घटनाक्रमांचा अभ्यास केला तर त्यातील सत्यता आपल्या पूर्वजांच्या जीवनपद्धतीवर, त्यांच्या विचारशक्ती आणि जगण्याच्या आसक्तीवर प्रकाशझोत टाकते. म्हणूनच इतिहास हा बहुतांश लोकांना आवडणारा विषय आहे.
