What is your favorite place to go in your city?

Solapur, my city in Maharashtra, India, is not just historical but also an ancient city rich in spirituality, relics, and historical references. Along with many historic structures and temples in the old city, the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Lake, formed by a meteorite impact, has become a major attraction for both locals and tourists.

• Just as every ancient city has a historical and spiritual heritage, my city, Solapur, is also endowed with an ancient legacy. Although Solapur is often regarded as a developed trade hub during the medieval period due to historical references from that era, deeper research into its history could unveil its significance in earlier times as well.
• Unfortunately, due to apathy and incomplete research, much of Solapur’s ancient past remains buried in the sands of time. According to records, it is believed that Solapur got its name because it was formed by the union of 16 villages. During British rule, Solapur became a center of the freedom movement and was referred to by the British as “Sholapur.” The term “Shola” in Hindi means fire, and Solapur, during the independence struggle, became a city blazing with rebellion, hence the name Sholapur.
• One key site that requires more research is the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Lake, located on Vijayapur Road in the city’s developing area. According to references in the Gazetteer, this lake was formed 3,500 to 4,000 years ago due to a meteorite impact. However, detailed information about it is scarce. The lake’s history becomes evident only after the British era, when they removed the silt and made it usable.
• Today, this lake, a focal point of the city’s attractions, is ideal for boating and provides a serene spot for locals to enjoy nature. It also serves as a resting place for migratory birds. Along with the city’s historical structures, the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Lake has become a prominent center of attraction for residents and tourists alike.

“हजारो वर्षांपूर्वी उल्कापाताने तयार झालेला छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज तलाव…!”

महाराष्ट्र राज्यातील (भारत) सोलापूर हे माझे शहर फक्त ऐतिहासिकच नाही तर अध्यात्मिक आणि प्राचीन अवशेष आणि संदर्भ असलेले पुरातन शहर आहे. जुन्या शहरातील अनेक ऐतिहासिक वास्तू आणि मंदिरांबरोबरच छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज तलाव हा उल्कापाताने तयार झालेला तलाव हा शहरवासीयांचे आणि पर्यटकांचे प्रमुख आकर्षणाचे ठिकाण बनले आहे.

• प्रत्येक पुरातन शहराला जसा ऐतिहासिक आणि आध्यात्मिक वारसा असतो. तसाच प्राचिनतेचा वारसा माझ्या सोलापूर शहराला लाभलेला आहे. मध्ययुगीन कालखंडापासूनचे ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ सापडत असल्याने याकाळात प्रगत आणि बाजारपेठ असणारे शहर म्हणून जरी सोलापूरकडे पाहिले जात असले तरी देखील या शहराच्या पुरातन काळाबद्दल अधिक संशोधन झाले तर प्राचीन कालखंड देखील आपल्या नजरेत येईल.
• केवळ अनास्थेमुळे आणि अर्धवट संशोधन कार्यामुळे हा प्राचीन कालखंड अजूनही काळाच्या उदरात गडप झालेला आहे. सोलापूर शहराविषयी ज्ञात असणाऱ्या नोंदी नुसार १६ गावांचे मिळून बनलेले शहर म्हणून याला सोलापूर हे नाव पडले असावे असे मानले जाते. ब्रिटिश राजवटीत स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीचे केंद्र बनलेल्या सोलापूर शहराला ब्रिटिश “शोलापूर” म्हणायचे. हिंदीमधील “शोला” म्हणजे आग, स्वातंत्र्य संग्रामात सोलापूर हे आग ओकणारे शहर बनले होते. म्हणून ते शोलापूर म्हणायचे.
• शहराच्या विकसनशील भागात विजयपूर रोडवर असलेल्या छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज तलावाच्या निर्मितीबाबत अधिक संशोधन होणे खूप गरजेचे आहे. कारण गॅझेटमध्ये असलेल्या उल्लेखानुसार साडेतीन ते चार हजार वर्षांपूर्वी उल्कापाताने हा तलाव निर्माण झाल्याची नोंद सापडते. पण त्यावर अधिक माहिती उपलब्ध होत नाही. ब्रिटिशांनी या तलावातील गाळ काढून हा तलाव उपयोगात आणला त्यानंतर या तलावाचा उल्लेख आढळतो.
• सध्या शहराच्या आकर्षणाचे केंद्र असलेला हा तलाव बोटिंगसाठी उपयुक्त तलाव आहे. याबरोबरच शहरवासीयांसाठी निसर्गाचा आनंद मिळविण्याचे हे एक चांगले ठिकाण आहे. दूरदेशातून येणाऱ्या पक्षांसाठी विश्रांतीचे स्थान आहे. शहरातील ऐतिहासिक वास्तूंबरोबरच छत्रपती संभाजी महाराज तलाव हा आकर्षणाचा केंद्रबिंदू ठरला आहे.
