Everyone considers their birth year significant, not just because they were born in that year and got to see the world, but also because the good and bad events that occurred during that year are often mentioned. This creates a sense of pride in being born against such a backdrop. My birth year is 1966. More than the global events of that year, I see it as the beginning of India’s true developmental era. This is because, during my childhood, the independent India that embraced democracy began to establish its identity on the world stage. This is the primary reason why I hold democratic values at my core.

• I was born on April 11, 1966. Earlier that year, in January, India’s second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, passed away, and Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister. It was during Indira Gandhi’s tenure that the nation began addressing its war-torn and unstable conditions, marking the real start of India’s nation-building efforts.
• Before my birth, in 1965, Pakistan waged war with India to seize control of Kashmir. This war ended in September 1965 without any resolution, thanks to the mediation by Russia. On January 10, 1966, Pakistan’s then military chief, Ayub Khan, and India’s Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, signed a peace agreement in Tashkent. However, Shastri tragically passed away the very next day, on January 11, due to a heart attack. Following his demise, Indira Gandhi took over as Prime Minister. That same year, the great freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar passed away in February. India also faced a severe drought in 1966. Against this backdrop of social and political instability, I was born on April 11. Instability primarily affects the middle-class working population, so you can imagine the circumstances surrounding my arrival.
• Between India’s independence in 1947 and 1965, the country had to fight two wars with Pakistan and one with China. With constant political instability and devastating droughts, the true efforts to build a stable nation began only in 1966.
• Our family held high regard for the ideas inspired by freedom fighter Savarkar’s patriotism. Like many Hindu nationalists, my parents mourned his loss. It was amidst all this unrest and instability that I was born. Perhaps that’s why my parents named me Mukund, another name for Lord Krishna.
• Even after 1966, India witnessed Hindu-Muslim communal riots. Yet, democracy started to take deeper roots among its citizens. Despite the challenges, India, having broken free from colonial rule, began progressing toward development.
• As a democracy, India has seen governments formed by political parties elected by its people. Just as I grew up in this environment, my country India was also growing and establishing itself on the global stage.
• No matter the ideology, the primary focus of governance remains the nation’s development. This is why India’s democracy has grown stronger over time. This is the story of my birth year. While we don’t have control over the year we are born, the story of that year often becomes a source of pride for us.

“खऱ्या अर्थाने भारताच्या उभारणीला सुरुवात झालेले वर्ष : १९६६”

प्रत्येकालाच आपले जन्म वर्ष हे महत्वपूर्ण वाटत असते. केवळ त्या वर्षात आपला जन्म झाला, आपल्याला हे जग बघायला मिळाले म्हणूनच नाही तर एकूणच आपल्या जन्माच्या वर्षभरात घडणाऱ्या बऱ्या-वाईट घटनांचा उल्लेख वारंवार होत असताना अशा पार्श्वभूमीवर आपण जन्माला आलो याचा एकप्रकारे नक्कीच अभिमान आपल्याला वाटत असतो. माझे जन्मवर्षं १९६६ आहे. या वर्षातील जागतिक घडामोडींपेक्षा मी माझ्या देशाचा म्हणजेच भारताचा खऱ्या अर्थाने उभारणीचा काळ सुरू होण्याचे वर्ष म्हणून समजतो. कारण माझ्या जन्मानंतर म्हणजेच माझ्या बालपणात स्वातंत्र्य मिळविलेल्या भारताने स्वीकारलेली लोकशाही प्रस्थापित करत जगासमोर आपली नवी ओळख निर्माण केली होती. मी लोकशाहीवादी विचारसरणीचा असल्याचे हेच तर प्रमुख कारण आहे.

• माझा जन्म ११ एप्रिल १९६६ रोजी झाला. याच वर्षीच्या जानेवारी महिन्यात स्वतंत्र भारताचे दुसरे पंतप्रधान लालबहाद्दूर शास्त्री यांचे निधन होवून इंदिरा गांधी पंतप्रधान बनल्या. इंदिरा पर्वाने देशाच्या युद्धजन्य आणि अस्थिर परिस्थितीवर मात करीत खऱ्या अर्थाने राष्ट्र उभारणीच्या कार्याला सुरुवात केली होती.
• माझ्या जन्मापूर्वी म्हणजे १९६५ मध्ये काश्मीरवर ताबा मिळविण्यासाठी पाकिस्तानने भारताबरोबर युद्ध केले होते. रशियाच्या मध्यस्थीने हे युद्ध सप्टेंबर १९६५ मध्ये कोणताही निर्णय न होता थांबवल्या गेले. त्यावेळी तत्कालीन पंतप्रधान लालबहाद्दूर शास्त्री यांच्यासोबत युद्धविरामसाठी पाकिस्तानचे तत्कालीन लष्करप्रमुख आयुब खान यांनी ताश्कंद येथे १० जानेवारी १९६६ मध्ये युध्दबंदीचा करार केला. त्यानंतर ११ जानेवारीला म्हणजेच दुसऱ्या दिवशी लालबहाद्दूर शास्त्री यांचे हृदयविकाराच्या धक्क्याने निधन झाले. त्यांच्या निधनानंतर इंदिरा गांधी यांनी पंतप्रधानपदाची सूत्रे हाती घेतली. तर महान स्वातंत्र्यसेनानी विनायक दामोदर सावरकर यांचे फेब्रुवारी १९६६ मध्ये निधन झाले. याच वर्षी भारतात भीषण असा दुष्काळ पडला होता. देशाच्या या सामाजिक आणि राजकीय अस्थिरतेच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर माझा ११ एप्रिलचा जन्म आहे. अस्थिरतेचा परिणाम हा सर्वात अगोदर मध्यमवर्गीय नोकरदार वर्गावर होत असतो. एकूणच तुम्हाला माझे स्वागत कसे झाले असेल ? याची कल्पना येईल.
• भारताला स्वातंत्र्य मिळाल्यानंतर म्हणजे १९४७ पासून ते १९६५ पर्यंत पाकिस्तान बरोबर दोन युद्धे तर चीन सोबत एक युद्ध करावे लागले. सततची राजकीय अस्थिरता आणि भीषण दुष्काळाच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर भारताच्या उभारणीसाठी खरी सुरुवात ही १९६६ पासून सुरू झाली.
• स्वातंत्र्यवीर सावरकरांच्या राष्ट्रभक्तीने प्रेरित अशा विचारांना मानणारे आमचे घर. त्यांच्या निधनाचे दुःख सर्वच हिंदू राष्ट्रभक्तांप्रमाणे माझ्या पालकांना होते. या सर्व अशांत आणि अस्थिरतेनंतर माझा जन्म झाला. म्हणूनच माझ्या पालकांनी माझे नाव मुकुंद ठेवले असावे. मुकुंद हे श्रीकृष्णाचे नाव.
• १९६६ नंतर देखील भारतात हिंदू-मुस्लिम जातीय दंगे होतच राहिलेत. पण खऱ्या अर्थाने प्रस्थापित केलेली लोकशाही नागरिकांमध्ये रुजत गेली. त्यामुळे स्थित्यंतरे कितीही होत असली तरी गुलामगिरीतून मुक्त झालेल्या भारताची विकासाकडे वाटचाल सुरू झाली.
• लोकशाही असल्याने निवडणुकांच्या माध्यमातून लोकांनी निवडून दिलेल्या राजकीय पक्षांची सरकारे या देशाने पाहिली आहेत. या वातावरणातच मी जसा मोठा होत गेलो तसा माझा भारतदेशही जगात मोठा होत चाललाय.
• विचारधारा कोणतीही असो, देशाचा विकास हेच सत्तेचे प्रमुख सूत्र आहे. म्हणूनच भारताची लोकशाही दिवसेंदिवस बळकट होत चालली आहे. हीच माझ्या जन्मवर्षाची कहाणी आहे. जन्म कोणत्या वर्षात घ्यायचा हे जरी आपल्या हाती नसले तरी आपल्या जन्मवर्षाची कहाणी पुढे आपला अभिमान बनत असते.
