What is your all time favorite automobile?

On one hand, considering the size of the town/city you live in, its current population, and most importantly, the condition of its internal roads, even a two-wheeler or a bicycle is sufficient for daily life. Given the ever-increasing fuel prices, petrol-powered vehicles are certainly not affordable for the common and middle-class people. Buying a four-wheeler merely for status is akin to keeping an elephant as a pet.

Now, the question arises: is there a genuine need for a personal vehicle for outstation travel? If the state government itself has provided the option of bus transportation, then why indulge in the luxury of owning a car? Personally, I don’t even use a two-wheeler in the city. For outstation travel, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s (ST) bus has always been my all-time favorite vehicle. A safe and reliable mode of transportation that gets you to your destination on time—such is the ST bus!

• The history of the ST bus, the public transport service I’m talking about, is equally fascinating. Public passenger transport through vehicles began in Maharashtra around 1932 during the British era, initiated by private operators. Over the next eight to ten years, the need to regulate this transport became apparent. This was also a time when the winds of independence were blowing strong, and in 1947, British rule in India came to an end.
• In 1948, the government established a company named Bombay State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) to manage passenger transport in the Mumbai Province of independent India. This company was granted a monopoly for public transport services. The first BSRTC bus operated on June 1, 1948, on the Pune-Ahmednagar route.
• Later, following the reorganization of states on linguistic lines, Maharashtra State was formed in 1960 by merging parts of Mumbai Province, the Central Provinces, and the erstwhile Nizam State. All transport organizations operating in these areas were integrated into BSRTC, and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was established.
• During the formative years of the state, roads were scarce, yet the ST bus service continued uninterrupted. Over the years, despite occasional disruptions due to employee strikes—countable on one’s fingers—the service has largely remained operational round the clock.
• Today, the ST Corporation operates around 15,512 vehicles, which include regular buses, semi-luxury buses, Shivshahi (seater), ordinary sleeper buses, Shivneri-Ashwamedh, midi-buses, and others like Shivai and Manav Vikas. Additionally, the corporation owns staff vehicles and supply vehicles.
• In present-day Maharashtra, even the most remote areas have been connected by roads, and ST buses have reached these regions too. Known for offering safe travel with minimal accidents, ST bus services remain a trusted mode of transportation.

एकीकडे तुम्ही रहात असलेल्या गावाचे/शहराचे आकारमान, तिथली सध्याची लोकसंख्या आणि सर्वात महत्वाचे म्हणजे अंतर्गत रस्त्यांची अवस्था पाहता दैनंदिन जीवनात एखादी दुचाकी वाहन किंवा सायकल देखील असेल तरी चालते. सतत पेट्रोलचे वाढणारे दर पाहता सर्वसामान्य आणि मध्यमवर्गीयांना पेट्रोलची वाहने हा परवडणारा विषय नक्कीच नाही. केवळ प्रतिष्ठा म्हणून चारचाकी वाहन खरेदी करणे हे हत्ती पाळण्यासारखेच आहे. आता राहिला प्रश्न बाहेरगावी जाण्यासाठी आवश्यकता आहे का ? जर राज्य शासनानेच बस वाहतुकीचा पर्याय उपलब्ध करून दिला असेल तर स्वतःसाठी चारचाकी वाहनाची चैन कशाला ? मी तर शहरात दुचाकी वाहन देखील वापरत नाही. बाहेरगावी जाताना महाराष्ट्र राज्य रस्ते परिवहन महामंडळाची एसटी बस हेच माझे सर्वकालीन आवडते वाहन आहे. सुरक्षित आणि वेळेवर योग्य ठिकाणी पोहचविणारे वाहन म्हणजे एसटी बस…!

• मी ज्या सार्वजनिक प्रवासी वाहतुकीची गोष्ट तुम्हाला सांगतोय त्या एसटी बसचा इतिहास देखील तेव्हढाच रंजक आहे. ब्रिटिशकाळात वाहनांद्वारे सार्वजनिक प्रवासी वाहतुकीची सुरुवात महाराष्ट्रात १९३२ च्या सुमारास खासगी व्यावसायिकांद्वारे सुरू झाली. त्यापुढच्या आठ-दहा वर्षात या वाहतुकीचे नियमन करण्याची गरज भासू लागली. याकाळात स्वातंत्र्याचे वारे जोरात वहात होते. १९४७ मध्ये भारतातील ब्रिटिश राजवट संपुष्टात आली.
• स्वतंत्र भारताच्या मुंबई प्रांतात १९४८ मध्ये बॉम्बे स्टेट रोड ट्रान्सपोर्ट कार्पोरेशन (बीएसआरटीसी) या नावाने प्रवासी वाहतूक करण्यासाठी सरकारी कंपनी स्थापन करण्यात येवून प्रवाशांच्या सार्वजनिक वाहतुकीचा एकाधिकार (पब्लिक ट्रान्सपोर्ट) या कंपनीला बहाल करण्यात आला.
• बीएसआरटीसीची पहिली बस १ जून १९४८ या दिवशी पुणे ते अहमदनगर या मार्गावर धावली. पुढे भाषिक आधारावर राज्य पुनर्रचनेनंतर १९६० मध्ये मुंबई, मध्यप्रांत आणि संपुष्टात आलेल्या निजाम राज्याचा भाग मिळून महाराष्ट्र राज्याची स्थापना करण्यात आली. त्यावेळी याभागात वाहतूक सेवा करीत असलेल्या सर्व संस्था बीएसआरटीसी मध्ये विलीन करून नव्या महाराष्ट्र राज्य मार्ग परिवहन महामंडळाची (एमएसआरटीसी) स्थापना करण्यात आली.
• नव्या राज्याच्या उभारणीच्या काळात रस्ते देखील नव्हते तरी एसटीने आपली प्रवासी सेवा अव्याहतपणे सुरू ठेवली. आजवरच्या काळात कर्मचाऱ्यांच्या संपामुळे अगदी बोटावर मोजण्याइतके वेळा एसटी बंदचा फटका बसला असला तरी इतरवेळी अहोरात्र ही सेवा सुरू आहे.
• आजच्या घडीला एसटी महामंडळाकडे वाहतुकीसाठी सुमारे १५ हजार ५१२ वाहने आहेत. यामध्ये साध्या गाड्या, निम आराम गाड्या, शिवशाही सीटर, साधी स्लीपर, शिवनेरी-अश्वमेघ, मिडी बस, मानव विकास, शिवाई अशा १५ हजारावर बसगाड्या आहेत. शिवाय अधिकारी वर्गाची वाहने, पुरवठ्याची वाहने महामंडळाकडे आहेत. आज महाराष्ट्र राज्यात अतिशय दुर्गम भागात रस्ते पोहोचले आहेत, तिथे एसटी बस देखील पोहोचली आहे. अपघातापासून सुरक्षित प्रवास म्हणून एसटी बससेवेकडेच विश्वासाने पाहिले जाते.
