Think back on your most memorable road trip.

I have already published an article titled “A 1500-Kilometer Bike Journey…!” on my blog on September 3, 2024, about the thrilling trip I took with my friend on a motorcycle. That day, the Daily Prompt had given the topic, “Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.” Of course, in today’s article, I will be sharing some remaining details from that same journey.

• If we try too hard to make something memorable, our efforts might fail, leading to disappointment. However, something done effortlessly and without much thought can become an unforgettable experience. I had a similar experience in 1998 when I undertook a thrilling and adventurous 1,500-kilometer motorcycle journey from Solapur (Maharashtra) to Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), a trip that I will remember for a lifetime.
• The reason behind this journey was quite simple. My friend, Mahendra Vishwanath Kavchale (who is now a renowned lawyer and settled in Pune), had brought his newly purchased Hero Honda motorcycle to show me. During a casual conversation, without any prior planning, we decided to embark on a 750-kilometer journey from Solapur to Tirupati the very next morning at dawn. Traveling without any preparation is undoubtedly thrilling but can also be equally risky. Honestly, at such moments, an excited mind hardly entertains any doubts. It’s only when something unexpected happens that all those doubts start to surface.
• Around 1998, the infamous sandalwood smuggler Veerappan had created terror in the border regions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. To capture him dead or alive, the government had deployed armed police forces and paramilitary units throughout the border forests. Encounters were frequent. In such a tense atmosphere, the two of us set out on a motorcycle through unfamiliar mountain and forest routes, completely unaware that the very path we were taking was under this threat.
• While traveling from Srisailam through the dense forests of the Nallamala mountain range and the Nagarjuna Tiger Reserve, we learned that just a few hours earlier, around midnight, Veerappan’s gang had blown up a bridge using detonators. We got this information amidst the crowd of vehicles after reaching the spot.
• Veerappan had brutally killed hundreds of elephants for ivory and murdered people for ransom. Witnessing this situation firsthand terrified both of us. Yet, driven by our determination to complete the journey, we cautiously moved ahead.
• At that time, the ghat roads of the Nallamala hills were narrow and winding, surrounded by dense forests. We didn’t even see sunlight throughout the day. In such a tense atmosphere, we covered a nerve-wracking stretch of about 60 to 70 kilometers, literally holding our breath. The thought of either falling into Veerappan’s clutches or encountering a tiger made us feel as if death was inevitable. But Lord Tirupati Balaji was with us. We safely reached Tirupati for Balaji’s darshan.
  This journey has remained the most memorable experience of both our lives.

“मोटारसायकलवर १५०० किलोमीटर केलेली ट्रिप आयुष्यातील सर्वात संस्मरणीय ठरली…!”

मोटारसायकल वरून मित्रासमवेत केलेल्या थरारक प्रवासाबद्दल मी यापूर्वीच ३ सप्टेंबर २०२४ रोजी माझ्या ब्लॉगवर “दीड हजार किलोमीटरचा बाईकवरचा प्रवास…!” हे आर्टिकल प्रसिद्ध केले आहे. त्या दिवशी डेली प्रॉम्प्टने “तुमच्या घरापासून सर्वात लांब प्रवास केलेल्या अनुभवाची एक गोष्ट शेअर करा” असा विषय दिला होता. अर्थात त्याच प्रवासातील काही राहिलेले तपशील मी आजच्या आर्टिकलमध्ये मांडणार आहे.

• आपण कोणतीही गोष्ट करत असताना ती संस्मरणीय ठरावी या हेतूने खूप प्रयत्नपूर्वक करायला गेलो तर कदाचित आपला प्रयत्न फसून आपल्याला अपयश येते. पण त्याउलट आपल्या ध्यानीमनी नसतानाही सहजतेने केलेली एखादी गोष्ट मात्र आयुष्यभर लक्षात राहणारी ठरत असते. हाच अनुभव मला १९९८ साली सोलापूर (महाराष्ट्र) ते तिरुपती (आंध्रप्रदेश) असा एकूण १५०० किलोमीटरचा मोटारसायकलवर केलेला प्रवास आयुष्यभर लक्षात राहील असा रोमांचकारी आणि थरारक प्रवास ठरला.
• या प्रवासाला जाण्याचे निमित्त अगदीच साधे होते. माझे मित्र महेंद्र विश्वनाथ कवचाळे (आता ते नामांकित वकील म्हणून कार्यरत असून पुणे येथे स्थायिक आहेत.) यांनी हिरोहोंडा कंपनीची खरेदी केलेली नवी मोटारसायकल मला दाखवायला आणली. त्यावेळी सहज झालेल्या चर्चेतून आम्ही कोणतीही पूर्वतयारी न करता सोलापूर ते तिरुपती या ७५० किलोमीटर अंतराच्या प्रवासाला लगेचच दुसऱ्या दिवशी पहाटे सुरुवात केली. कोणतीही तयारी नसताना केलेला प्रवास हा नक्कीच थरारक होतो, पण तो तेव्हढाच संकटात टाकणारा ठरू शकतो. पण खरं सांगू, अश्यावेळी उत्साहीत असलेल्या आपल्या मनात कोणत्याच प्रकारची शंका येत नसते. काही अघटित घडल्यावरच ह्या सगळ्या शंकांना पेव फुटत असते.
• १९९८ च्या सुमारास आंध्रप्रदेश आणि कर्नाटक राज्याच्या सीमावर्ती भागात कुख्यात चंदनतस्कर विरप्पन याने धुमाकूळ घातला होता. सरकारने त्याला जिवंत किंवा मृत अवस्थेत पकडण्यासाठी सशस्त्र पोलीस दल आणि निमलष्करी दलाच्या तुकड्या सीमावर्ती भागातील जंगलातून तैनात केलेल्या होत्या. सतत चकमकी सुरू होत्या. अश्या तणावपूर्ण वातावरणात आम्ही दोघेच अपरिचित असलेल्या मार्गातून डोंगर आणि जंगलातून मोटारसायकलवर निघालो होतो. अर्थात आपण जाणार आहोत त्याच मार्गावर हा तणाव आहे हे त्यावेळी आम्हाला माहीत नव्हते.
• मात्र श्रीशैलमहून आम्ही नल्ला-मल्ला डोंगररांगातील जंगलातून नागार्जुन व्याघ्र प्रकल्प अभयारण्यातून सकाळी निघालो तेंव्हा जंगलात काही तासांपूर्वीच म्हणजे मध्यरात्रीच्या सुमारास चंदनतस्कर विरप्पनच्या टोळीने डिटोनेटरच्या सहाय्याने पूल उडविला होता. तिथे पोहोचल्यावर वाहनांच्या गर्दीतून आम्हाला ही माहिती मिळाली.
• विरप्पन याने हस्तिदंतासाठी शेकडो हत्ती आणि खंडणीसाठी माणसांच्या कत्तली केल्या होत्या. समोर आलेला प्रसंग पाहून आम्ही दोघेही प्रचंड घाबरलो होतो. मात्र प्रवास पूर्ण करायचाच या हट्टाने आम्ही वाट काढून पुढे निघालो.
• नल्ला-मल्ला डोंगरातील घाटरस्ता हा त्यावेळी अरुंद आणि नागमोडी वळणाचा होता. शिवाय आजूबाजूने घनदाट जंगल होते. आम्हाला दिवसभर सूर्यदर्शन देखील झाले नव्हते. अश्या तणावपूर्ण वातावरणात जवळपास ६० ते ७० किलोमीटरचा थरारक प्रवास अक्षरशः जीव मुठीत धरून केला होता. विरप्पनच्या तावडीत सापडलो किंवा समोर वाघ आला तर ? दोन्ही शक्यतांमध्ये आम्हाला आमचे मरण दिसत होते. पण तिरुपती बालाजी आमच्या पाठीशी होता. आम्ही सुखरूप तिरुपतीला बालाजी दर्शनासाठी पोहोचलो होतो. हा प्रवास आमच्या दोघांच्याही आयुष्याचा संस्मरणीय प्रवास ठरला आहे.
