Every day isn’t the same. Some days, from the moment I wake up, everything feels dull. The laziness in my body just doesn’t go away. Nothing comes to mind, and I don’t feel like doing anything. At such times, if you’re religious, you might spend your time in devotion to God. Others may feel like visiting inspiring people or places related to their work. I feel like doing both. I’m not extremely religious, but I do believe in the invisible power of God. When I feel deeply discouraged, I sincerely remember that unseen force. However, usually, when I start feeling dull, I visit places ranging from historical sites to modern inspirational spots. In my city (Solapur, Maharashtra), the “Pioneer Prosthetics and Orthotics Center” is one such inspiring place for me.

• In 1982, in the middle-class city of Solapur, Audumbar Virupaksha Basutkar founded the “Pioneer Prosthetics and Orthotics Center”, a service-oriented institution dedicated to improving the lives of differently-abled individuals by fitting them with artificial limbs. This marked the beginning of his service to the disabled community.
• Audumbar Basutkar had completed his Diploma in Prosthetics and Orthotics in 1980. Now, his son, Utsav Audumbar Basutkar, has also joined him in serving the differently-abled through “Pioneer.” Utsav earned his degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the All India Institute for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AIIPMR) in 2016. From 2017 to 2019, he worked as a prosthetist and orthotist in Wellington, New Zealand, providing patient care. Since 2020, he has been working alongside his father.
• Despite the Basutkar father-son duo serving the differently-abled for the past 42 years, I only came to know about them a year ago. I had no knowledge of the “Pioneer Prosthetics and Orthotics Center”, located just 1.5 kilometers from my home. It was surprising to me that a center attracting people from all over the country for artificial limbs was completely unknown to me.
• I first visited the Pioneer workshop in Vishal Nagar, near Dawat Chowk in the Jule Solapur area, when I accompanied my artist friend Randhir Abhyankar, who had to have his left leg amputated below the knee due to an accident. He was there to get a prosthetic leg fitted, and that’s when I met the Basutkar father and son for the first time.
• Both father and son are incredibly calm and humble. Their conversations reflect their deep awareness of the service they provide in helping patients regain their lives after losing a limb. They silently teach that no matter how many challenges or setbacks life brings, one should never assume it’s all over. Instead, they inspire others to face life again with the same enthusiasm. Whether it’s a prosthetic leg or hand, patients feel as though these artificial limbs come to life through the skilled hands of the Basutkars.
• For able-bodied people, this is nothing short of inspirational. Witnessing how people overcome tremendous challenges and stand tall again definitely sparks motivation. It makes me want to shake off my laziness and dive back into work with renewed energy.

“प्रेरणादायी ठिकाणी भेट दिली की आपण उत्साही होतो…!”

रोजचाच दिवस सारखा नसतो. एखाद्या दिवशी सकाळी उठल्यापासूनच कंटाळवाणे वाटायला लागते. अंगातील आळस काही केल्या जात नाही. काही सुचत नाही किंवा काही करावेसे वाटत नाही. अश्यावेळी तुम्ही धार्मिक असाल तर परमेश्वराची आराधना करण्यात आपला वेळ घालवता. तर काहींना प्रेरक वाटणाऱ्या व्यक्ती किंवा कामाच्या ठिकाणी भेट द्यावी वाटते. मला दोन्हीही गोष्टी कराव्याशा वाटतात. म्हणजे मी फार कट्टर धर्मवादी नाहीय. पण परमेश्वर या अदृश्य शक्तीवर माझा विश्वास आहे. खूप नाउमेद झालो तर मी त्या अदृश्य शक्तीचे श्रद्धापूर्वक स्मरण करतो. पण एरव्ही मी कंटाळवाणे वाटायला लागले की ऐतिहासिक स्थळांपासून ते प्रेरणा देणाऱ्या आधुनिक काळातील ठिकाणापर्यंत सर्वठिकाणी भेटी देतो. माझ्या शहरात (सोलापूर, महाराष्ट्र) “पायोनियर प्रोस्थेस्टिक्स अँड ऑर्थोटिक्स सेंटर” हे असेच माझ्यासाठी प्रेरणादायी ठिकाण आहे.

• अवयव गमावलेल्या दिव्यांगांना कृत्रिम अवयव बसवून त्यांचे जीवन सुसह्य बनविण्याचे सेवाभावी कार्य करणाऱ्या “पायोनियर प्रोस्थेटिक्स अँड ऑर्थोटिक्स सेंटर”ची स्थापना १९८२ मध्ये सोलापूर सारख्या मध्यमवर्गीयांच्या शहरात करून या सेंटरचे संचालक औदुंबर विरुपाक्ष बासुतकर यांनी दिव्यांगांच्या सेवेला प्रारंभ केला.
• औदुंबर बासुतकर यांनी १९८० मध्ये प्रोस्थेटिक्स अँड ऑर्थोटिक्स या विषयातील डिप्लोमा पूर्ण केला होता. आता त्यांच्या समवेत त्यांचे सुपुत्र उत्सव औदुंबर बासुतकर हे “पायोनियर”च्या माध्यमातून दिव्यांगसेवेत कार्यमग्न झाले आहेत. उत्सव बासुतकर यांनी ऑल इंडिया इन्स्टिट्यूट फॉर फिजिकल मेडिसिन अँड रिहॅबिलेशन (एआयआयपीएमआर) मधून २०१६ मध्ये प्रोस्थेस्टिक्स अँड ऑर्थोटिक्स मधील पदवी संपादन केली आहे. याबरोबरच २०१७ ते २०१९ या काळात न्यूझीलंड मधील वेलिंग्टन शहरात प्रोस्थेटीट्स आणि ऑर्थोटीट्स म्हणून रुग्णसेवा बजावली आहे. २०२० पासून ते वडिलांच्या सोबत कार्यरत आहेत.
• गेल्या ४२ वर्षांपासून दिव्यांगसेवेत असलेल्या बासुतकर पिता-पुत्रांची ओळख मात्र मला गेल्या वर्षभरापूर्वी झाली. माझ्या घरापासून अवघ्या दीड किलोमीटर अंतरावर असलेल्या “पायोनियर प्रोस्थेटिक्स अँड ऑर्थोटिक्स सेंटर” या संस्थेबद्दल मला वर्षभरापूर्वी काहीच माहिती नव्हती. ज्या ठिकाणी देशभरातून दिव्यांग कृत्रिम अवयवांसाठी येतात ते सेंटर माझ्यासाठी अनोळखी होते. पहिल्यांदा याचेच मला आश्चर्य वाटले.
• माझे सहकारी कलावंत मित्र रणधीर अभ्यंकर यांचा अपघाताने डावा पाय गुडघ्याच्या खालून कापावा लागला. त्यानंतर कृत्रिम पाय बसविण्याच्या निमित्ताने त्यांच्यासोबत शहरातील जुळे सोलापूर भागातील दावत चौकालगत असलेल्या विशालनगर मधील “पायोनियर”च्या वर्कशॉपमध्ये जायला मिळाले. तिथे बासुतकर पिता-पुत्रांची पहिल्यांदा भेट झाली.
• दोघेही पिता-पुत्र अतिशय शांत आणि निगर्वी स्वभावाचे आहेत. आपण अवयव गमावलेल्या रुग्णांचे आयुष्य पूर्ववत करण्यासाठी सेवा देत आहोत याचे भान त्यांच्या बोलण्यातून जाणवते. आयुष्यात कितीही संकटे आली किंवा आघात झाले तरी सगळंच संपलंय असं मानायचं नसतं याउलट पुन्हा तेव्हढ्याच उत्साहाने आयुष्याला सामोरे जायचे असते ही शिकवण ते आपल्या कृतीतून देतात. कृत्रिम पाय असो अथवा हात असो बासुतकर पिता-पुत्रांचे हात लागल्यावर ते जिवंत होतात हाच तर दिव्यांगांना मिळणारा अनुभव आहे.
• धडधाकट माणसांसाठी हे सर्व प्रेरणादायी असेच आहे. किती संकटांवर मात करीत लोक नव्याने पुन्हा उभे राहतात हे पाहिल्यावर आपल्याला नक्कीच प्रेरणा मिळते. आळस झटकून पुन्हा कामाला जोरदार सुरुवात करावीशी वाटते.
