What is your favorite animal?

Until just a month ago, the “dog” was included in my list of favorite animals for being loyal. However, during my visit to Satara, an unfamiliar stray dog bit my leg, which has lessened my love for dogs. I had to immediately take an anti-rabies injection, and not just one—I had to take a total of five injections at specific intervals.

Despite being a typical middle-class person who hadn’t provoked it, that stray dog rudely attacked me from behind, while the other well-behaved pet dogs with collars quietly watched the incident. What angered me more was that not a single one of those dogs barked at the terrifying stray.

Compared to that, I now find the “rabbit,” with its middle-class temperament, much more endearing.

• Putting jokes aside, I genuinely dislike aggressive and violent people and animals alike. I prefer those who live peacefully and lovingly, ensuring they don’t cause trouble for others. What can I say? These are the middle-class values I’ve been raised with since childhood.
• I’ve never kept a dog or a cat at home. The reason is the same—they both can become violent at times. In such moments, they won’t hesitate to attack even their caretaker. But that’s not the case with a rabbit.
• A rabbit is inherently not a violent creature. Moreover, like me, it’s also a vegetarian. I might like all herbivorous animals, but no matter how strong or brave an animal is, I will never like a violent one. Lions, tigers, cheetahs, and leopards may be swift and powerful, but they are violent. I’ve been taught never to befriend violent people or animals.
• The story that the tortoise won the race against the rabbit is a false tale, probably spread by the tortoise clan itself. For generations, humans have believed this lie, and this deeply saddens the rabbit community. Yet, they still love humans.
• By munching on soft, tender green leaves, they genuinely promote vegetarianism more than humans ever could. Forget attacking anyone—they get scared and hide even at the slightest sound. Just like middle-class people. They are also adorable and chubby, much like the middle-class themselves.
• That’s why I deeply adore the rabbit, a symbol of middle-class traits.

“मध्यमवर्गीयांच्या स्वभाव गुणधर्माचा ‘ससा’ मला प्रिय….!”

अगदी महिनाभरापूर्वी पर्यंत “कुत्रा” हा इमानदार म्हणून माझ्या आवडत्या प्राण्यांच्या यादीत समाविष्ट होता. मात्र मी सातारा दौऱ्यावर असताना एका अनोळखी भटक्या कुत्र्याने माझ्या पायाचा चावा घेतल्याने सध्या माझे “श्वान प्रेम” कमी झाले आहे. मला तातडीने अँटी रेबिजचे इंजेक्शन घ्यावे लागले. ते देखील ठराविक दिवसांच्या अंतराने एकूण पाच इंजेक्शन्स घ्यावी लागली. माझ्यासारख्या मध्यमवर्गीय माणसाने छेडले नसतानाही पाठीमागून येत चावा घेण्याचा असभ्यपणा एका भटक्या कुत्र्याने केला आणि बाकीच्या गळ्यात पट्टे अडकवलेल्या सभ्य पाळीव कुत्र्यांनी तो प्रसंग निमूटपणे बघितला. त्यांच्यापैकी एकही कुत्रा त्या दहशत निर्माण करणाऱ्या कुत्र्यावर भुंकला नाही याचाच मला जास्त राग आलाय. त्यापेक्षा मध्यमवर्गीयांचा स्वभाव गुण असलेला “ससा” हा प्राणी मला अतिशय प्रिय वाटू लागला आहे.

• गंमतीचा भाग सोडला तर खरंच मला आक्रमक आणि हिंसक असलेली माणसे आणि प्राणी दोघेही आवडत नाहीत. शांततेने आणि प्रेमळपणे, इतरांना आपल्यामुळे त्रास होणार नाही असे वागणारी माणसे आणि प्राणी मला आवडतात. काय करणार ? लहानपणापासून हेच मध्यमवर्गीयांचे संस्कार माझ्यावर झालेले आहेत.
• मी घरात आजवर कुत्रा किंवा मांजर पाळलेला नाही. त्याचं कारण देखील हेच आहे. कुत्रा आणि मांजर हे दोघेही प्रसंगी हिंसक होतात. मग त्यावेळी ते स्वतःच्या पालनकर्त्यावर देखील हल्ला करायला मागेपुढे पहात नाहीत. पण सशाचे तसे नसते.
• एकतर ससा मुळातच हिंसक प्राणी नाही. शिवाय तो देखील माझ्यासारखा ‘शाकाहारी’ आहे. एकवेळ मला सर्वच शाकाहारी प्राणी आवडतील, पण कितीही ताकदवान आणि लढवय्ये असले तरी मला हिंसक प्राणी कधीही आवडणार नाहीत. सिंह, वाघ, चित्ता, बिबट्या हे कितीही चपळ आणि ताकदवान असले तरी ते हिंसक आहेत. आणि हिंसक मनुष्य किंवा प्राण्यांशी अजिबात मैत्री करू नये असा संस्कार माझ्यावर झालेला आहे.
• कासवा बरोबरच्या शर्यतीत हरल्याची खोटी गोष्ट त्याचा तिरस्कार करणाऱ्या कुणीतरी (बहुदा कासव जमातीनेच) पसरविली. पिढ्यानपिढ्या ही खोटी गोष्ट आपण मनुष्यप्राणी ऐकतोय आणि त्यावर विश्वास ठेवतोय याचेच सशाच्या जमातीला अतीव दुःख आहे. पण तरी देखील ते मनुष्यप्राण्यांवर प्रेमचं करतात.
• हिरव्या झाडांची कोवळी लुसलुशीत पाने खावून माणसांपेक्षाही ते खऱ्या अर्थाने शाकाहाराचा प्रसार आणि प्रचार करतात. बरं कुणावर हल्ला करण्याचे सोडा….साधा आवाज जरी झाला तरी ते घाबरून लपून बसतात. अगदी मध्यमवर्गीय माणसांसारखे. मध्यमवर्गीय माणसांसारखेच ते दिसायला गोंडस आणि गुबगुबीत असतात. म्हणूनच मध्यमवर्गीयांच्या स्वभाव गुणधर्माचा ससा मला अतिशय आवडतो.
