What’s your dream job?

“Becoming a writer was a dream I had cherished since childhood. While working in the amateur theatre scene, I got the opportunity to write for newspapers. While working as a journalist for various Marathi newspapers, I also established my identity as a ‘writer.’ Now, as I stand on the threshold of retirement, I consider journalism a ‘bonus’ in my career, as it came along while I was achieving the job I had always dreamed of.”

• “I never dreamt of becoming a journalist; my dream was always to become a writer. I chose the newspaper industry because it gave me the opportunity to write. At that time, I had absolutely no knowledge of journalism or reporting—not even how to write a news article.
• Since my student days, I had been writing occasionally for various newspapers, weeklies, and magazines, with the sole intention of establishing my identity as a writer. I didn’t know what it took to become a writer or whether there was even a job title called ‘writer.’ I just had a passion for writing on various subjects.
• The story of how I started working as a journalist is quite amusing. In 1993, I won the “Best Director” award in the finals of the Maharashtra Government’s State Drama Competition, organized by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs. At that time, I was doing small jobs to make ends meet. The award ceremony took place in Panaji, Goa, and my interview about the event was broadcast on Solapur Akashvani. After hearing that interview, the late Ranganna Vaidya, a legendary figure in journalism, offered me a job as a supplement editor in Dainik Sanchar. While writing about films, theatre, and the arts, I began my journey in news reporting.
• In 1995, my first two-act Marathi play, Kahi Agni Shamat Nahi, was staged through a competition. It won the Maharashtra Government’s “Best Playwriting” award, and I gained recognition as a playwright in the theatre world. My one-act plays continued, but I also ventured into writing full-length plays.
• While working tirelessly in the newspaper industry to earn a living, I fearlessly reported scams and social struggles, building my identity as a journalist. I chose this field solely because it allowed me to write.
• I call this my dream job for a reason. Writing a play requires events to build a story, and news is nothing but events. In that sense, journalism complemented my passion for writing. That’s why I believe I got a job that aligned perfectly with my dreams.
• Now, as I stand on the threshold of retirement, I am ready to devote myself entirely to writing. This life has been dedicated to writing, and if there is a next life, I hope God grants it to me for the same purpose—to write.”

” जी नोकरी केली ते स्वप्नंच होते, आता निवृत्तीच्या उंबरठ्यावर ..!”

लेखक बनायचे हे लहानपणापासून मी पाहिलेले स्वप्न होते. पुढे नाट्यक्षेत्रात हौशी रंगभूमीवर कार्यरत असतानाच वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रामध्ये लेखनकार्य करण्याची संधी मिळाली. वेगवेगळ्या मराठी वृत्तपत्रातून पत्रकार म्हणून नोकरी करत असतानाच स्वतःची “लेखक” म्हणून ओळख निर्माण केली. आता निवृत्तीच्या उंबरठ्यावर आहे. ज्या नोकरीचे मी स्वप्न पाहिले तेच मिळवताना पत्रकारिता हे क्षेत्र खरं म्हणजे मला “बोनस” म्हणून मिळाले असंच मी समजतो.

• खरंच मी पत्रकार होईन असं कधीच स्वप्न पाहिले नव्हते. मी लेखक होण्याचेच स्वप्न पाहिले होते. मी वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्राची निवड केली ते मला तिथे लिखाणकाम करायला मिळेल म्हणून. तोपर्यंत मला पत्रकारिता, बातमीदार याबद्दल काडीचीही माहिती नव्हती. बातमी कशी लिहितात हे देखील मला माहित नव्हते.
• विद्यार्थीदशेत असल्यापासून निरनिराळ्या वृत्तपत्र, साप्ताहिक, मासिकातून नैमित्तिक लिखाण मी करत होतो, ते देखील आपली लेखक म्हणून ओळख व्हावी म्हणूनच. लेखक होण्यासाठी काय करावे लागते ? नोकरीमध्ये “लेखक” हे पद आहे का ? हे देखील मला माहित नव्हते. फक्त मला विविध विषयांवर लिखाणकाम करण्याची आवड होती.
• माझ्या वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रात पत्रकार म्हणून नोकरीला सुरुवात करण्याचा किस्सा देखील गंमतीशीर आहे. १९९३ साली मला महाराष्ट्र शासनाच्या सांस्कृतिक कार्य संचालनालयाच्या राज्य नाट्य स्पर्धेत अंतिम फेरीत “सर्वोत्कृष्ट दिग्दर्शक” म्हणून पुरस्कार मिळाला होता. त्यावेळी मी उपजीविकेसाठी छोटी-मोठी कामे करत होतो. पुरस्कार वितरण सोहळा पणजी (गोवा) येथे पार पडला. त्या पुरस्कार सोहळ्याबद्दल आकाशवाणी सोलापूर केंद्रावर माझी मुलाखत प्रसारित झाली होती. ती मुलाखत ऐकून पत्रमहर्षी कै. रंगाण्णा वैद्य यांनी दैनिक संचार या वृत्तपत्रात मला पुरवणी संपादनाची नोकरी दिली. चित्रपट, नाट्य आणि कलाक्षेत्रावर लेखन करतानाच माझ्या बातमीदारीला सुरुवात झाली.
• पुढे १९९५ मध्ये पहिले दोन अंकी मराठी नाटक “काही अग्नी शमत नसतात” हे स्पर्धेद्वारे रंगभूमीवर आले. या नाटकासाठी महाराष्ट्र शासनाचा “सर्वोत्कृष्ट नाट्यलेखनाचा” पुरस्कार मिळाला आणि मी नाट्यलेखक म्हणून नाट्यक्षेत्रात ओळखला जावू लागलो. माझे एकांकिका लेखन सुरूच होते. पण दोन अंकी नाटकाच्या लेखनाला देखील मी सुरुवात केली.
• एकीकडे उपजीविकेसाठी नोकरी म्हणून मी वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रात झोकून देवून काम करत असताना अनेक घोटाळे, सामाजिक संघर्ष निर्भीडपणे मांडत पत्रकार म्हणून आपले लेखनकार्य करत होतो. लिखाण करायला मिळते म्हणूनच मी त्या क्षेत्रात जाण्याचा निर्णय घेतला होता.
• माझ्या स्वप्नातील नोकरी म्हणून मी एव्हढ्या करिता म्हणतो, त्याचंही कारण आहे. नाटक लिहिताना देखील तुम्हाला कथा मांडताना “घटना” लागतात. तर बातमी म्हणजे “घटना”, त्यामुळे मला पूरक ठरणारीच पत्रकारितेची नोकरी मिळाली असं मी समजतो. त्यामुळेच स्वप्नातली नोकरी मी वास्तवात करून आता निवृत्तीच्या उंबरठ्यावर आहे. आताही मुक्तपणे मला लेखनकार्यच करायचे आहे. हा जन्म तर मी पूर्णपणे लेखनकार्यासाठी वाहिलेला आहे. पुनर्जन्म असेल तर पुढचा जन्म देखील देवाने मला लेखनकार्यासाठीच द्यावा.
