In my childhood, I never wondered why I was named “Mukund.” My mother was religious, while my father, apart from his devotion to Lord Rama, was not a staunch follower of other religious customs. Then why did they choose the name “Mukund,” one of the thousand names of Lord Vishnu, for me?

One possible reason could be the tradition in earlier times of having all family members’ names start with the same initial letter. Since my father’s name was Madhukar and my mother’s name was Madhuvanti, they might have chosen “Mukund” to follow this pattern.

Whatever the reason, in the era of 1966, my name “Mukund,” which sounded modern, was also considered highly sacred from a spiritual and religious perspective.

लहानपणी मला माझे नाव “मुकुंद” का ठेवले असावे ? असा प्रश्न कधी पडला नव्हता. माझी आई धार्मिक तर वडील रामभक्ती सोडली तर इतर धार्मिक रीतिरिवाज पाळणारे कट्टर सनातनी नव्हते. मग माझे नाव त्यांनी भगवान विष्णूच्या एक हजार नावांपैकी एक असलेले “मुकुंद” हे नाव का ठेवले असावे ? एकतर पूर्वी घरातील सर्वांच्या नावांची सुरुवात एकाच आद्याक्षराने व्हावी हा एक अट्टाहास असायचा. वडिलांचे नाव मधुकर तर आईचे नाव मधुवंती म्हणून कदाचित माझे नाव मुकुंद ठेवले असेल. काहीही असो १९६६ च्या काळात आधुनिक वाटणारे माझे नाव “मुकुंद” हे आध्यात्मिक आणि धार्मिक दृष्टिकोनातूनही अत्यंत पवित्र समजले जात होते.
