Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

The Buddhist-Jain caves of Dharashiv, located in the Balaghat mountain range, just 8 kilometers from the city of Dharashiv (formerly known as Osmanabad) in the Indian state of Maharashtra, have remained unseen by me until now. Dharashiv, the district headquarters, is merely 70 kilometers from Solapur, the city where I reside.

Interestingly, despite being in the field of journalism and having a passion for travel, I have never managed to visit the caves of Dharashiv. I have no particular reason for not visiting them. I have explored the Balaghat mountain range extensively over the years, yet somehow, these caves have remained unseen by me.

• Dharashiv (formerly known as Osmanabad), a neighboring district of Solapur, is considered a prominent district in the Marathwada region with a rich historical background. The city of Dharashiv is just 70 kilometers from Solapur, where I reside. Although Solapur and Dharashiv are separate districts, they share a common historical, social, and cultural identity.
• Having worked in the field of journalism for the past 28-30 years, my professional engagements have frequently taken me to almost every village in both these districts. Despite this, I am quite surprised that I have never visited the caves of Dharashiv.
• Located 8 kilometers from Dharashiv city, these caves, situated in the Balaghat mountain range, have been recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India. They are mentioned in the book Indian Archaeological Survey by James Burgess. The Dharashiv caves comprise a total of seven caves. The first cave is a small open space, while the second cave contains intricately carved sculptures. Each of the seven caves holds historical significance, although many of the sculptures have suffered damage over time. Ancient records suggest that these caves were carved between the 5th and 7th centuries. Originally, they were Buddhist caves, but later, they were converted into Jain monuments.
• Despite being as ancient as the renowned Ajanta and Ellora caves in Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) district of Marathwada, the Dharashiv caves remain relatively unknown due to the lack of tourist attention.
• I have always been passionate about visiting historical sites and understanding their glorious past. I consider it a small part of my responsibility to present this rich history to the younger generation. I take immense pride in my country and region, believing that our civilization and culture have a profound legacy, which I seek to explore through my interests.
• Due to my busy work schedule, I couldn’t visit the Dharashiv caves earlier, but now I am determined to do so. I also plan to write a dedicated blog about my experience. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend visiting these fascinating caves!

“धाराशिवच्या बौद्ध-जैन लेण्या पहायच्या राहिल्यात…!”

भारतातील महाराष्ट्र राज्यातील धाराशिव (पूर्वीचे नाव उस्मानाबाद ) शहराजवळ ८ किलोमीटर अंतरावर असलेल्या बालाघाटच्या डोंगर रांगांतील धाराशिवच्या बौद्ध-जैन लेण्या आजवर पहायच्या राहून गेल्यात. धाराशिव हे जिल्ह्याचे ठिकाण मी राहतो त्या सोलापूर शहरापासून अवघ्या ७० किलोमीटर अंतरावर आहे. विशेष म्हणजे मी पत्रकारितेच्या क्षेत्रात असूनही माझा भटकंतीचा छंद असतानाही धाराशिवच्या लेण्या पाहण्याचे मात्र आजवर मला जमलेले नाही. का जमले नाही ? याचे माझ्याजवळ काहीच कारण नाही. बालाघाटच्या डोंगर रांगात मी आजवर खूप भटकंती केलेली आहे. फक्त ह्या लेण्या मात्र आजवर पाहिल्या नाहीत.

• सोलापूर जिल्ह्याचा शेजारी असलेला धाराशिव (पूर्वीचे नाव उस्मानाबाद) हा ऐतिहासिक पार्श्वभूमी असलेला मराठवाडा प्रांतातील प्रमुख जिल्हा समजला जातो. मी राहतो त्या सोलापूर शहरापासून अवघ्या ७० किलोमीटर अंतरावर धाराशिव हे शहर आहे. सोलापूर आणि धाराशिव हे दोन्ही वेगवेगळे जिल्हे असले तरी दोघांची ऐतिहासिक, सामाजिक आणि सांस्कृतिक ओळख आहे. मी पत्रकारितेच्या क्षेत्रात गेल्या २८-३० वर्षांपासून कार्यरत असल्याने या दोन्ही जिल्ह्यातील प्रत्येक गावांशी माझा कामानिमित्त नेहमीच संबंध आलेला आहे. असे असतानाही मी धाराशिवच्या लेण्या बघितलेल्या नाहीत याचे मलाच खूप आश्चर्य वाटते.
• धाराशिव शहरापासून ८ किलोमीटर अंतरावर बालाघाटच्या डोंगररांगात असलेल्या या लेण्यांची भारतीय पुरातत्व खात्याने दखल घेतलेली आहे. जेम्स व्हर्जेस यांच्या “भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्व्हेक्षण” या पुस्तकात या लेण्यांचा उल्लेख आहे. धाराशिवच्या लेण्यांमध्ये एकूण ७ गुहा आहेत. पहिली गुहा लहान मोकळ्या जागेत आहे. दुसऱ्या लेणीमध्ये कलात्मक काम केलेल्या मूर्ती आहेत. अश्या एकूण ७ लेण्या आहेत. या लेण्यांमधील मूर्तींचे बरेच नुकसान झालेले दिसते. पाचव्या आणि सातव्या शतकाच्या दरम्यान या लेण्या कोरल्याचे प्राचीन उल्लेख सापडतात. या लेण्या मुळात बौद्ध लेण्या होत्या. पण नंतर काही काळाने त्यांचे रूपांतर जैन स्मारकात केल्याचा उल्लेख आढळतो.
• मराठवाडा प्रांतातील संभाजीनगर (पूर्वीचे औरंगाबाद) जिल्ह्यातील वेरूळ आणि अजिंठा लेण्यांप्रमाणेच ह्या लेण्या पुरातन काळातील असल्या तरीदेखील वेरूळ-अजिंठा लेण्यांप्रमाणे या लेणीला पर्यटकांचा प्रतिसाद लाभत नसल्याने तशा त्या अपरिचितच आहेत.
• मला ऐतिहासिक स्थळांना भेटी देवून त्यांचा गौरवशाली इतिहास समजून घेण्याची पूर्वीपासून आवड आहे. नव्या पिढीसमोर हा गौरवशाली इतिहास मांडण्याचे अल्पसे कार्य मी करत असतो. मला माझ्या देशाचा, प्रदेशाचा प्रचंड अभिमान आहे. इथली सभ्यता आणि संस्कृती याला मोठी पार्श्वभूमी आहे असे मानणारा मी असल्याने छंदातून मी हे कार्य करत असतो. कामाच्या व्यस्ततेमधून काही कारणाने भेट देवू न शकलेल्या धाराशिवच्या लेण्यांना मी आता भेट देणार आहेच. त्यावर स्वतंत्र ब्लॉग देखील लिहीन. पण तुम्हाला संधी मिळाली तर अवश्य भेट द्या….!
