Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

Although our family is not strictly orthodox in terms of Hindu beliefs, we are a family that celebrates all Hindu festivals and traditions with due rituals and respect for heritage. While embracing progressive and modern ideas across generations, we have always approached Hindu traditions and religious celebrations with a reformist perspective. We set aside outdated and obsolete customs, focusing instead on inclusive festivals and religious events. After all, festivals are meant to be celebrations of joy. Along with this, we also celebrate the birthdays of all family members in a homely and traditional manner.

• Gudi Padwa, Ganeshotsav, Dussehra, and Diwali are festivals that bring immense joy to Hindus. According to the Hindu calendar, Gudi Padwa marks the first day of the New Year and holds great mythological significance.
• During the nine days of Navratri, people experience a sense of spiritual bliss through the worship of the Goddess. On the tenth day, Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm by performing Seemollanghan (crossing boundaries), symbolizing victory. It is also marked by the burning of effigies of Ravana, representing the triumph of good over evil.
• Following this, the festival of Diwali is celebrated with much excitement as the festival of lights. It signifies the triumph of light over darkness and happiness over sorrow. This five-day celebration is deeply rooted in religious traditions and is celebrated with fireworks and joyous gatherings.
• Throughout the year, various religious festivals take place, embracing people of all castes and religions. Everyone participates in their own way, adding to the festive cheer and spreading joy.
• In our family, along with celebrating religious festivals, we also have a tradition of celebrating each family member’s birthday in a homely manner. Since our family now consists of just the three of us—my wife, my son, and myself—we celebrate all three birthdays and our wedding anniversary at home with great enthusiasm. With all these celebrations and festivals, the year goes by so joyfully that we hardly realize how time flies.

“हिंदू सणांच्या सोबतच घरातील सर्वांचे वाढदिवस उत्साहात साजरे करतो…!”

आमचे कुटुंब फार कर्मठ हिंदुधर्म विचारांचे नसले तरीही हिंदुधर्मातील सर्व सण रितिरिवाजाप्रमाणे साजरे करणारे, परंपरा जपणारे कुटुंब आहे. प्रत्येक पिढीतील सुधारणावादी नवमतांचा स्वीकार करतानाच हिंदुधर्मातील परंपरा आणि धार्मिक उत्सव पाळण्याकडे आमचे कुटुंब नेहमीच सुधारणावादी दृष्टिकोनातून पहात आले आहे. धर्मातील जुनाट आणि कालबाह्य रूढी बाजूला सारून सर्वसमावेशक असणारे सण आणि धार्मिक उत्सव आम्ही पाळतो. शेवटी सण म्हणजे आनंदोत्सव असतो. या बरोबरच घरातील सर्व सदस्यांचे घरगुती पद्धतीने वाढदिवस साजरे करतो.

• गुढीपाडवा, गणेशोत्सव, दसरा, दिवाळी हे सण तर हिंदुधर्मीयांसाठी आनंदोत्सवाची पर्वणीच असतात. हिंदू कालगणनेनुसार गुढीपाडवा हा तर नववर्षारंभाचा पहिला दिवस असतो. याला पौराणिक महत्व देखील आहे.
• नवरात्रीच्या पर्वात देवीच्या आराधनेने ९ दिवस मंगलमय अनुभूती घेतल्यावर दहाव्या दिवशी येणारा दसरा हा सण सीमोल्लंघनाने उत्साहात साजरा केला जातो. दुष्टाचे प्रतीक असलेल्या रावणाच्या प्रतिमेचे दहन करीत दसरा साजरा केला जातो.
• त्यानंतर येणारा दिवाळी हा सण प्रकाशाचा सण म्हणून उत्साहात साजरा केला जातो. आयुष्यातील दुःख, अंधार दूर सारून प्रकाशाचे पर्व सुरू करणारा सण म्हणजे दिवाळी. पाच दिवस चालणाऱ्या या उत्सवाला धार्मिकतेची जोड आहे. फटाक्यांच्या आतषबाजीत हा प्रकाशाचा सण साजरा केला जातो.
• यासह वर्षभर विविध धार्मिक उत्सव होत असतात. सर्व जाती-धर्मांना सामावून घेणारे उत्सव होत असतात. या आनंदाच्या पर्वणीत प्रत्येकजण आपापल्या परीने सहभागी होत आनंदाची लयलूट करीत असतो.
• आमच्या कुटुंबात धार्मिक सण आणि उत्सवासोबतच घरातील प्रत्येक सदस्याचा वाढदिवस घरगुती पद्धतीने साजरा करण्याची परंपरा आहे. माझ्या कुटुंबात आता मी, पत्नी आणि मुलगा असे तीनच सदस्य असल्याने तिघांचे वाढदिवस आणि आमच्या लग्नाचा वाढदिवस घरातच उत्साहात साजरा करण्याची पद्धत आहे. प्रत्येक सण आणि उत्सव साजरे करण्यात म्हणजेच आनंदोत्सव साजरा करण्यात वर्ष केंव्हा संपले हे देखील कळत नाही.
