Write about your first computer.

We always consider the generation born in the 1960s to be the luckiest. This is because, along with fundamental development, this generation also witnessed the transformations in science and technology. It was our generation, born in the 1960s, that first observed the day-to-day changes as we took progressive steps forward.

However, alongside the joy of witnessing these changes, we became late learners when it came to handling new technological inventions. The same happened with computers in our lives. Computers entered our lives quite late. We weren’t particularly interested in becoming fully trained to use them, as age was catching up with us. After entering our forties, we had to acquire basic computer education only due to job requirements.

• Since I worked in the Marathi newspaper industry, you might find it surprising, or perhaps even think I’m exaggerating. But the truth is, during those times, handling a computer was not mandatory for all employees in the Marathi newspaper sector. Of course, there was a computer department in the press, but it had a trained team of operators who were allowed to handle the computers. We used to call them “foremen.” No one else, apart from these foremen, was permitted to even touch the computers.
• In the editorial department, all of us—be it reporters, sub-editors, or even the editor—used to write the daily news and articles by hand with a pen on plain paper. These handwritten drafts were then sent to the computer department for conversion into digital format, which was done by the “foremen” (computer operators).
• However, around 2004-05, winds of change began to blow in the Marathi newspaper industry. During this period, it was made mandatory for all employees in the editorial department to undergo computer training. Otherwise, they were left with no choice but to resign from their jobs.
• Thus, it was around 2004-05 that we first touched a computer monitor. We used to dust the computer screens daily, but we couldn’t seem to shake off the “dust” that had settled on our brains regarding computer training.
• In the end, to save our jobs, we were taught phonetic language. Somehow, we learned to operate DTP (Desktop Publishing) by typing Marathi words phonetically using English alphabets. Even today, my knowledge of computers remains as limited as it was then.
• Now, as I write this blog and share my writing with you, I type on my mobile and publish it on the blog. It’s all a marvel of the computer system. While I am a witness to this incredible innovation, I regret, standing on the threshold of retirement, that I am not fully trained in it.

“नोकरीतील सक्तीमुळेच साठच्या दशकात जन्मलेल्या पिढीला कॉम्प्युटर शिकावा लागला…!”

साठच्या दशकात जन्मलेल्या पिढीला आम्ही नेहमीच सर्वात नशीबवान समजतो. कारण मूलभूत विकासाबरोबरच विज्ञान आणि तंत्रज्ञानात होणाऱ्या स्थित्यंतराचे आम्ही साठच्या दशकात जन्मलेली पिढी साक्षीदार आहोत. प्रगतीच्या दिशेने एक-एक पाऊल पुढे टाकताना रोजच्या जगण्यात होणारे बदल पहिल्यांदा आमच्या पिढीनेच पाहिले आहेत. मात्र नुसतेच बदलाचे साक्षीदार होण्याच्या आनंदाबरोबरच नव्या शोधातील उपकरणे हाताळण्यासाठी आम्ही फार उशिरा प्रशिक्षणार्थी झालो. आमच्या आयुष्यात संगणकाच्या बाबतीत हेच घडले. फार उशिरा आमच्या आयुष्यात संगणकाचा प्रवेश झाला. तो हाताळण्यासाठी पूर्ण प्रशिक्षित होण्यात आम्हाला रस नव्हता, कारण आमचे वय वाढत चालले होते. वयाच्या चाळीशीत आल्यानंतर केवळ नोकरीतील सक्ती म्हणून आम्हाला संगणकाचे जुजबी शिक्षण घ्यावे लागले.

• मी मराठी वृत्तपत्र माध्यमात नोकरी करत असल्याने तुम्हा सर्वांना कदाचित आश्चर्य वाटेल किंवा मी तुम्हाला थापा मारतोय असंही कदाचित वाटेल. पण खरं सांगतो, मराठी वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रात काम करताना संगणक हाताळणे हे सर्वच कर्मचाऱ्यांना त्याकाळी सक्तीचे नव्हते. अर्थात प्रेसमध्ये संगणक विभाग होता. पण संगणक हाताळण्यासाठी प्रशिक्षित असा ऑपरेटर वर्ग असायचा. त्यांना आम्ही “फोरमन” म्हणायचो. तर या फोरमन शिवाय अन्य कुणालाही संगणकाला साधा हात लावायची देखील परवानगी नसायची.
• अगदी संपादकीय विभागात लेखनकार्य करणाऱ्या वार्ताहर, उपसंपादक ते थेट संपाडकापर्यंत आम्ही सर्वचजण कोऱ्या कागदावर पेनने रोजच्या घडामोडींचे बातमीस्वरूपात, लेखमालेच्या स्वरूपात लिखाण करून संगणक विभागात स्क्रिप्ट पाठवायचो. त्या हस्तलिखितांचे संगणकीय रूपांतरण “फोरमन” (कॉम्प्युटर ऑपरेटर) करायचे.
• मात्र २००४-०५ सालापासून मराठी वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रात बदलाचे वारे वाहू लागले. यात संपादकीय विभागातील सर्वच कर्मचाऱ्यांना संगणक प्रशिक्षण सक्तीचे करण्यात आले. अन्यथा नोकरीचा राजीनामा द्यावा लागणार होता.
• अशा तर्हेने २००४-०५ च्या सुमारास पहिल्यांदा आम्ही संगणकाच्या मॉनिटरला स्पर्श केला. संगणकाच्या स्क्रीनवरची धूळ आम्ही रोजच झटकत होतो. पण संगणक प्रशिक्षणाविषयी आमच्या मेंदूवर बसलेली धूळ झटकायला आम्हाला जमले नाही.
• शेवटी नोकरी वाचवायची म्हणून आम्हाला पोनेटिक लँग्वेज शिकवण्यात आली. मराठी लेखन उच्चारानुसार इंग्रजी वर्णमालेतील अक्षरांवर आम्ही कसेबसे डीटीपी ऑपरेटिंग शिकलो. आजही तेव्हढ्याच अपुऱ्या संगणकीय ज्ञानावर अर्धशिक्षित आहे. आज मी ब्लॉग लिहितोय, तुमच्यापर्यंत माझे लिखाण पोहोचविताना मी मोबाईलवर टाईप करून ब्लॉगवर उमटवितोय. हा सगळा संगणकीय प्रणालीचा चमत्कार आहे. या आविष्काराचे आम्ही साक्षीदार असलो तरी पूर्ण प्रशिक्षित नाहीत याचेही मला आता निवृत्तीच्या उंबरठ्यावर दुःख आहे.
