Lately, I have been quite confused about something. A regular reader of my blog called me to share his concern. He said, “Your blog is excellent, and every post is engaging. The only issue is that the photos you use related to your posts are of very basic quality.”

I laughed and brushed off his sweet complaint at that moment, but the thought refused to leave my mind. Just because I write well, does that mean I must also be good at photography? I find content for various topics to write about, but does that automatically mean I will find the perfect photos too?

Many times, certain topics come up where finding relevant photos becomes difficult. Often, we write about past events that happened years ago. In such cases, if we don't have photos from that time, does that mean our writing won't seem authentic?

Writing and photography are both forms of creativity, but they are not dependent on each other. A writer paints pictures with words, while a photographer tells stories through the images captured by a camera. Both arts require observation, sensitivity, and expression, but their tools and techniques are entirely different.

A writer delves deep into their imagination, weaving thoughts into words, whereas a photographer captures real-life moments through their lens. Sometimes, a writer may witness a beautiful scene but fail to capture it properly with a camera because their mind is engaged in describing it rather than framing it.

This does not mean that one person cannot master both arts, but each has its own distinct process. Just as not every great photographer is necessarily a skilled writer, not every talented writer is a great photographer. Expressing emotions through words and bringing them to life through images are two different creative perspectives.

“मी लिखाणकाम करतो म्हणजे चांगले फोटो काढू शकतो असं नाही…!”

अलीकडे माझा एका गोष्टीवरून चांगलाच गोंधळ उडालाय. माझा ब्लॉग नियमित वाचणाऱ्या एका वाचकाने त्याला जे खटकलं ते आवर्जून मला फोन करून सांगितलं. “तुमचा ब्लॉग खूप चांगला झालाय, प्रत्येक पोस्ट वाचनीय होतेय. फक्त खटकणारी गोष्ट म्हणजे त्या पोस्टच्या संदर्भात तुम्ही जे फोटो टाकताय ते फारच प्राथमिक दर्जाचे असतात.” त्याच्या या गोड तक्रारीला मी हसून टाळलं खरं पण हा विषय माझ्या डोक्यातून काही केल्या जाईना. मी चांगलं लिहितो म्हणजे मी चांगली फोटोग्राफी करावी असा अट्टाहास कसा करता येवू शकतो ? मला वेगवेगळ्या विषयांचे लिहिण्यासाठी कंटेंट सापडतात. म्हणजे मला फोटोसाठी सापडतील असं थोडीच आहे..!

बऱ्याचवेळा काही-काही विषय असे येतात की, त्याचे फोटो मिळणे अवघडच असते. बऱ्याच वेळा आपण घडून गेलेल्या घटनांवर खूप वर्षांनी लिहीत असतो. अशावेळी आपल्या संग्रही त्यावेळेचे फोटो नसतील तर आपले लिखाण सत्य वाटणार नाही का...?

लेखन आणि फोटोग्राफी हे दोन्ही सर्जनशीलतेचे प्रकार असले तरी ते परस्परांवर अवलंबून नाहीत. लिहिणारा व्यक्ती आपल्या शब्दांमधून चित्र रंगवतो, तर छायाचित्रकार कॅमेऱ्यातील दृश्यांमधून कथा सांगतो. दोन्ही कलांमध्ये निरीक्षणशक्ती, संवेदनशीलता आणि अभिव्यक्ती महत्त्वाची असते, पण त्यांची साधने आणि तंत्र वेगवेगळी असतात. लेखक आपल्या कल्पनेच्या गाभ्यात शिरून विचारांच्या धाग्यांना शब्दरूप देतो, तर छायाचित्रकार वास्तवातल्या क्षणांना कॅमेऱ्यात कैद करतो. कधी कधी लेखन करणाऱ्या व्यक्तीला सुंदर दृश्य दिसलं तरी ते योग्यप्रकारे कॅमेऱ्यात पकडता येत नाही, कारण त्याचं मन त्यावर लिहिण्यात गुंतलेलं असतं. याचा अर्थ असा नाही की एकाच व्यक्तीला दोन्ही कला अवगत नसतात, पण प्रत्येकाची स्वतःची एक स्वतंत्र प्रक्रिया असते. जसा उत्कृष्ट फोटोग्राफर असलेला प्रत्येकजण चांगला लेखक असतोच असं नाही, तसंच उत्तम लेखक असलेला प्रत्येक जण चांगला फोटोग्राफर असतोच असंही नाही. शब्दांनी भावना टिपणं आणि फ्रेममधून त्या साकार करणं—ही दोन वेगळी सर्जनशील दृष्टी आहे.
