Have you ever unintentionally broken the law?

Some situations are unexpected, and unknowingly, we end up making mistakes. A similar incident happened to me when I once rode a two-wheeler without a driving license. To make things worse, when a traffic policeman caught me in the middle of a busy square, I argued with him, claiming my authority as a journalist.

Later, when I reached the office, my editor found out about the incident and gave me a serious scolding. Interestingly, that traffic policeman eventually became quite familiar to me. But for a long time, I felt embarrassed whenever I recalled that incident.

Eventually, I sold my two-wheeler and have been walking ever since. Over time, as I began to understand the benefits of walking, I started feeling grateful to that traffic policeman for unknowingly leading me to a healthier lifestyle.

I committed the offense of driving a vehicle without a valid license. Of course, almost everyone does this at some point. Though it may not seem like a serious crime, it is still a reckless act that invites accidents.

When youthful enthusiasm takes over, we often fail to realize that we are breaking the law.

An Unintentional Incident That Left a Lasting Impression

I still remember that day. Suddenly, I had to rush out for an important news story, and my friend’s Luna parked nearby seemed like the easiest option. I had basic knowledge of riding, and since it was around noon with little traffic on the road, I thought I could manage the journey smoothly. But that moment turned out to be an unintended mistake.

I got onto the road, but there was a slight nervousness in my mind. Whenever I saw a policeman ahead, I instinctively slowed down. I kept wondering what I would say if I got stopped. And right in the middle of a busy square, a traffic policeman noticed me. His experienced eyes caught my mistake instantly.

Had I spoken to him politely after he stopped me, perhaps the situation wouldn’t have escalated. But instead, I argued with him, asserting my identity as a journalist. He let me go at that moment, but later, he reported the incident to our editor.

When I returned to the office, the editor called me into his cabin and gave me a serious scolding. Nothing major happened that day, but I learned a crucial lesson—following the law is not just about avoiding penalties but ensuring our own and others’ safety.

After that incident, I made a firm decision never to ride a vehicle without a proper license. Sometimes, mistakes happen unintentionally, but if we learn the right lesson from them, we ensure they don’t happen again.

“अनावधानाने कायदा मोडला;पण चूक लक्षात आल्यावर खजील झालो…!”

काही प्रसंग अनपेक्षित असतात आणि नकळत आपण एखादी चुकीची गोष्ट करून बसतो. माझ्याबाबतीतही असाच एक प्रसंग घडला होता, जेंव्हा वाहन परवाना नसताना मी दुचाकी चालविली होती. शिवाय भरचौकात ट्रॅफिक पोलिसाने पकडल्या नंतर मी त्याच्याशी पत्रकार म्हणून हुज्जतही घातली होती. नंतर ऑफिसला आल्यावर संपादकांना ही गोष्ट समजल्यावर त्यांनी माझी चांगलीच कानउघाडणी केली होती. नंतर तो ट्रॅफिक पोलिसही चांगला ओळखीचा झाला. पण मी मात्र बरेच दिवस ती गोष्ट आठवली की खजील होत होतो. पुढे मी दुचाकी विकल्यानंतर आजतागायत पायी चालणेच सुरू ठेवले. आता पायी चालण्याचे फायदे समजायला लागल्यावर वाहन चालविणे सोडल्याबद्दल “त्या” ट्रॅफिक पोलिसाचे मी मनोमन आभारच मानतो.

मी वाहन चालविण्याचा परवाना नसतानाही वाहन चालविण्याचा गुन्हा केला होता. अर्थात प्रत्येकजण हा गुन्हा करतच असतो. फार मोठा अपराध नसला तरी अपघाताला आमंत्रण देण्याचा तो एक आत्मघातकी प्रकारच असतो. अर्थात तारुण्याचा जोश अंगात असल्यावर आपण कायदा मोडतोय याचे भान रहात नसते.

अनावधानाने घडलेली पण कायम लक्षात राहिलेली घटना :

तो दिवस आठवतोय. अचानक एका महत्वाच्या बातमीसाठी बाहेर पडण्याची गरज भासली, आणि समोर उभी असलेली मित्राची लुना हाच सोपा पर्याय वाटला. चालवण्याचे प्राथमिक ज्ञान होते, त्यामुळे दुपारच्या सुमारास रस्त्यावर वर्दळ नसतानाचा प्रवास सहज होईल, असे वाटले. पण तो एक अनावधानाचा क्षण ठरला. रस्त्यावर उतरलो खरा, पण मनात थोडी धाकधूक होती. समोर पोलिस दिसले की आपसूकच गती कमी व्हायची. कुठेही अडवले गेलो असतो, तर काय बोलायचे, याचा विचार करतच वाहन चालवत होतो. बरोबर भर चौकातच ट्रॅफिक पोलिसाचे माझ्याकडे लक्ष गेले. त्याच्या अनुभवी नजरेने मला बरोबर पकडले होते. त्याने हटकल्यावर कदाचित मी नम्रतापूर्वक त्याच्याशी बोललो असतो तर वादावादी झाली नसती. पण मी पत्रकार असल्याचे सांगून त्याच्याशी हुज्जत घातली. त्यावेळी त्याने मला सोडले पण आमच्या संपादकांच्या कानावर ही गोष्ट त्याने घातली. ऑफिसला आल्यावर संपादकांनी मला त्यांच्या केबिनमध्ये बोलावून चांगलीच कानउघाडणी केली होती. त्यादिवशी काही अनुचित घडले नाही, पण त्या घटनेने एक महत्त्वाचा धडा मिळाला—कायद्याचे पालन करणे हे केवळ शिक्षा टाळण्यासाठी नसून, ते आपल्या आणि इतरांच्या सुरक्षिततेसाठी आवश्यक आहे. त्या प्रसंगानंतर वाहन परवाना मिळवल्याशिवाय गाडी हाताळायची नाही, हे ठरवले. कधी कधी अनावधानाने चूक घडते, पण त्यातून योग्य शिकवण घेतली, तर ती चूक पुन्हा होत नाही.
