Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

The Daily Prompt asked, “What is the most ambitious project you have undertaken so far without anyone’s guidance?” Moreover, it also asked for a description of that project.

Fortunately, I found some photos in my mobile photo album (luckily, I hadn’t deleted them).

During the festival of Diwali, every household is filled with the excitement of new clothes, delicious festive treats, and dazzling lights. However, during one Diwali (most likely in 2020), I successfully completed an ambitious project—creating a sky lantern made of bamboo sticks entirely with my own hands, without any guidance or assistance.

This experience taught me a great lesson—some things are meant to be done on your own. Challenges arise along the way, but the joy of accomplishing them is beyond words!

1. Concept and Preparation:

A few days before Diwali, I decided that instead of buying a ready-made lantern from the market, I would make a sky lantern using bamboo sticks on my own. Without taking anyone’s guidance, I wanted to achieve this using only my creativity and hard work.

2. Gathering the Necessary Materials:

• Straight, lightweight yet sturdy bamboo sticks
• Strong thread and glue
• Colorful paper
• Scissors, ruler, and compass
• Wiring and a bulb for lighting

2. The Challenging Process:

I carefully determined the size and length of the bamboo sticks. First, I built a square frame and gradually worked on shaping it into an eight-sided structure. The most challenging part of the process was ensuring that the bamboo sticks were placed correctly and evenly. Sometimes, the joints didn’t fit well, and occasionally, the sticks broke. But I remained patient and kept trying.

Once the main frame was ready, I began pasting colorful paper over it. This entire process was time-consuming and required a lot of perseverance. I paid close attention to maintaining a balanced design on all sides. Finally, I attached decorative fringes (like fabric or paper tassels) at the bottom and fitted the lighting inside.

4. The Final Outcome and Joy:

On the first day of Diwali, when I hung my handcrafted sky lantern on the roof, my heart filled with joy. As it lit up, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. It was different and special compared to the lanterns available in the market—it was a symbol of my hard work, persistence, and determination.

दिवाळीचा सण आला की घराघरात नवे कपडे, फराळाचे पदार्थ आणि रोषणाईचा उत्साह असतो. पण एका दिवाळीला (बहुतेक २०२० सालाच्या) मी कुणाच्याही मार्गदर्शन आणि मदतीशिवाय स्वतःच्या हातांनी बांबूच्या काड्यांचा आकाश कंदील तयार करण्याचा महत्वाकांक्षी प्रकल्प अगदी यशस्वीरीत्या पूर्ण केला होता.

या अनुभवाने मला एक मोठा धडा शिकवला—काही गोष्टी स्वतः करायच्या असतात, त्या करताना अडचणी येतात, पण त्यातून मिळणारा आनंद शब्दांपलीकडचा असतो!

1. संकल्पना आणि तयारी :-

दिवाळीच्या आधी काही दिवस मी ठरवले की, बाजारातून तयार कंदील आणण्याऐवजी मी स्वतःच बांबूच्या काड्यांचा आकाश कंदील तयार करेन. कुणाचेही मार्गदर्शन न घेता स्वतःच्या कल्पनाशक्तीच्या आणि मेहनतीच्या जोरावर हे साध्य करायचे होते.

2. सुरुवातीला मला आवश्यक सामग्री गोळा करावी लागली:-

* बांबूच्या सरळ, हलक्या पण मजबूत काड्या

* मजबूत दोरा आणि गोंद

* रंगीबेरंगी कागद

* कात्री, पट्टी आणि कम्पास

* दिव्यासाठी वायरिंग आणि बल्ब

3. कष्टप्रद प्रक्रिया :-

बांबूच्या काड्यांचा आकार आणि लांबी विचारपूर्वक ठरवली. सर्वात आधी मी चौकोनी चौकट बांधली आणि हळूहळू त्यात आठ बाजूंची संरचना तयार करू लागलो. या प्रक्रियेत बांबूच्या काड्या सरळ आणि नीट लावणे हे सर्वात कठीण काम होते. काहीवेळा जोडणी व्यवस्थित बसत नव्हती, कधी कधी काड्या तुटत होत्या, पण मी संयमाने प्रयत्न करत राहिलो.

जेव्हा मुख्य सांगाडा तयार झाला, तेव्हा त्यावर रंगीबेरंगी कागद चिकटवायला सुरुवात केली. ही सगळी प्रक्रिया अत्यंत वेळखाऊ आणि चिकाटीची होती. प्रत्येक बाजूला समतोल डिझाईन राहील याची काळजी घेतली. शेवटी, तळाला झिरमिळ्या (तुळईसारखे कापडी किंवा कागदी पट्टे) लावल्या आणि आत लाइटिंग फिट केले.

4. शेवटचा परिणाम आणि आनंद :-

जेव्हा मी माझ्या हातांनी बनवलेला आकाश कंदील दिवाळीच्या पहिल्या दिवशी छतावर लटकवला, तेव्हा मन आनंदाने भरून आले. तो झगमगू लागला, आणि मी केलेल्या मेहनतीचे चीज झाल्याचा अनुभव आला. तो बाजारात मिळणाऱ्या कंदिलांपेक्षा वेगळा आणि खास होता—माझ्या मेहनतीची, चिकाटीची आणि जिद्दीची ओळख होता.
