A week before the annual exams, sitting together with the neighborhood kids and studying was an event that never failed to happen in anyone’s childhood. As soon as the exams were on the horizon, a distinct rush would begin in every household. The topic of conversation among women would start with, “How is your child’s studies going?” and eventually lead to, “How many marks will your child get?” But amidst all this, the real fun came from studying together with friends from the neighborhood. As the exam date drew closer, late-night study sessions would increase, and then, the warm steaming tea made by mother would wake everyone up.
Even though there are 'online study groups' in today's digital age, the joy of studying together during childhood was something truly special. That friendship, that studying, those moments – they are what give childhood its true sweetness. Despite the competition in studies, there was a unique joy in grabbing each other's homework notebooks and going through them while studying together.
The Moving Study School
The ‘study groups’ formed in the name of studying were often a special symbol of quickly formed friendships. In the morning, it would be at someone’s house, in the afternoon in someone else’s courtyard, and sometimes on the terrace in the evening — this was the “moving study school.” Everyone had books in their hands, but more than that, they had pencils, colorful highlighters, and school notes.
No Place for Study Stress
Someone would bring a textbook, someone else would bring practice questions. Asking each other questions, helping someone understand if they forgot something, and in between, laughing and giggling a little… in all of this, where was the space for study stress?
Mother’s Tea, Biscuits, and Bhel
Hot tea made by mother, a plate of bhel or biscuits — these were the sweet memories of such study sessions. Some would spend the remaining time playing after studying. And sometimes, those late-night Q&A sessions became our first experiences of “night study” during those childhood days!
Friendship Alongside Studies
Even though the exam had to be faced individually, the week leading up to it was never spent in loneliness. Because there was the companionship of study — and more importantly, the companionship of friendship.
“आईच्या हातचा चहा, भेळ अन वार्षिक परीक्षेची तयारी….!”
वार्षिक परीक्षेच्या आठवडाभर आधीपासून शेजारच्या मुलांसोबत एकत्र बसून अभ्यास करणे हा तर प्रत्येकाच्या बालपणातील न चुकलेला प्रसंग असतो.
परीक्षेची चाहूल लागली की घराघरांमध्ये एक वेगळीच लगबग सुरू व्हायची. बायकांच्या गप्पांचा विषय ‘तुझ्या मुलाचं अभ्यासाचं काय चाललंय ?’ इथंपासून सुरू होऊन ‘तुझ्या घरात किती मार्क्स येतील ?’ इथपर्यंत जायचा. पण या सगळ्यात खरी मजा यायची ती म्हणजे शेजारच्या मित्रमैत्रिणींशी मिळून अभ्यास करण्यामध्ये. परीक्षेची तारीख जसजशी जवळ यायची तशी रात्रीची जागरणे वाढायची मग आईच्या हातचा गरम वाफाळलेला चहा झोप उडवायचा.
आजच्या डिजिटल युगात ‘ऑनलाईन स्टडी ग्रुप्स’ असले तरी त्या बालपणीच्या एकत्र येऊन केलेल्या अभ्यासाची मजा काही वेगळीच होती. ती मैत्री, तो अभ्यास, ते क्षण – हेच तर आपल्याला बालपणाची खरी गोडी देऊन जातात. अभ्यासातील चढाओढ असूनसुद्धा एकत्रपणे अभ्यास करताना एकमेकांच्या होमवर्कच्या वह्या झडप घालून बघण्यात एक वेगळाच आनंद मिळायचा.
फिरती अभ्यासशाळा
अभ्यासाच्या नावाखाली तयार होणाऱ्या ‘स्टडी ग्रुप्स’ या फार कमी वेळात एकत्र आलेल्या मैत्रीचं खास प्रतीक असायच्या. सकाळी एखाद्याच्या घरात, तर दुपारी दुसऱ्याच्या अंगणात, तर कधी संध्याकाळी गच्चीवर अशी ही ‘फिरती अभ्यासशाळा’ चाले. प्रत्येकाच्या हातात पुस्तकं असायची, पण त्याहून जास्त हातात असायची ती पेन्सिली, रंगीत हायलाईटर्स आणि शाळेच्या नोट्स.
अभ्यासाच्या तणावाला जागा नाही
कोणीतरी तासिका घेऊन यायचं, कोणीतरी सराव प्रश्न. एकमेकांना प्रश्न विचारून उत्तरं सांगणं, कोणी काही विसरलं तर मिळून ते समजावून सांगणं, आणि मध्येच थोडं हसणं-खिदळणं… या सगळ्या गोष्टींमध्ये अभ्यासाच्या तणावाला कुठे जागा असायची?
आईच्या हातचा चहा-बिस्कीट अन भेळ
आई बनवलेला गरम गरम चहा, भेळ किंवा बिस्कीटांची प्लेट ही या स्टडी सेशन्सची गोड आठवण असायची. काहीजण अभ्यास करून झाल्यावर उरलेला वेळ खेळण्यात घालवायचे. आणि कधी कधी रात्री उशिरापर्यंत चाललेले प्रश्नोत्तरांचे सत्र म्हणजे त्या वयातले ‘नाईट स्टडी’चे सुरुवातीचे अनुभव!
अभ्यासासोबत मैत्रीची साथ
परीक्षा जरी प्रत्येकालाच द्यावी लागत असली तरी त्या परीक्षेच्या आधीचा आठवडा हा कधीच एकटेपणात गेला नाही. कारण अभ्यासाची साथ असायची आणि त्याहूनही मोठी गोष्ट – मैत्रीची साथ असायची.
