For the past two days, the scorching sun has been relentlessly blazing down. In such intense heat, I had the opportunity to visit the Ramabai Ambedkar Residential School for Scheduled Castes at Nimbargi in South Solapur taluka, which is dedicated to imparting education to children from economically weaker and marginalized communities.
The invitation to attend the event as the chief guest came with warm insistence from the school’s founder-president Balasaheb Wagh and Siddharam Wagh, on the occasion of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. Visiting this school turned out to be a unique experience — one that filled my heart with joy and recharged my spirit.
The summer of Solapur is often a topic of discussion. From sunrise itself, the temperature begins to rise. In this season, 40 degrees Celsius is considered a very normal temperature. As the morning passes, the mercury continues to climb. In such conditions, stepping outside even for a moment becomes difficult.
However, I couldn't turn down the enthusiasm of the children and the earnest request of the founding brothers. Despite the intense heatwave, the message that young children were eagerly waiting to welcome me brought a comforting coolness to my heart.
Talent Showcase Program
To mark the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, the Ashram School organized a talent showcase program for its students. Along with me, Atish Mohan Bansode, the State President of Yuva Panther, was also present as a chief guest. The event was graced by the presence of Yeda Duphargude, a member of the Nimbargi Gram Panchayat, School Management Committee President Husain Kamble, and Shivling Duphargude, Anand Duphargude, and Parmeshwar Duphargude. Under the guidance of the school’s Headmistress Mrs. Pratibha Jadhav, the teaching staff created a wonderful cultural program presented by the students.
Unaided Residential Ashram School
The working model of a residential Ashram School is significantly different from that of regular schools. The very idea of Ashram Schools was introduced by the government to bring children from illiterate and economically backward Dalit and oppressed communities into the mainstream of education. However, there’s a considerable difference between general unaided schools and unaided Ashram Schools. This in itself could be a subject of deeper discussion. Starting and running an unaided residential Ashram School is a financial challenge. Even the donations received from generous individuals often fall short. The founder himself has to bear the financial burden to keep the mission of education going.
Educational Contribution of Founder Balasaheb Wagh
Balasaheb Wagh himself comes from a severely underprivileged background and serves as a teacher in a Zilla Parishad school after completing his own education under trying circumstances. Owing to his excellence in teaching, he has been honored with the Ideal Teacher Award by the President of India. Through the ‘Sir Foundation’, his research work on educational initiatives has been widely recognized. His wife has also received the Ideal Teacher Award from the State Government. While establishing the Ramabai Ambedkar Unaided Residential Ashram School, recognized in 2013, he had to face numerous challenges.
Ashram School Built on His Own Farmland
The Ashram School at Nimbargi, which has been fully functional since 2021, stands on land owned by Balasaheb Wagh himself. The school comprises ten classrooms and has separate residential facilities for boys and girls, along with a spacious playground. A borewell provides an adequate water supply. Currently, the school accommodates a total of 180 students, including both boys and girls.
Two Meals a Day and Students’ Basic Needs
The students enrolled in the Ashram School generally come from extremely poor and difficult family backgrounds. Some of them even struggle to secure two meals a day. The responsibility of preparing and serving breakfast, tea, and two daily meals for nearly 100 resident students is handled under the supervision of Balasaheb Wagh’s mother, Mrs. Mangal Wagh. Apart from this, the expenses for school uniforms and educational materials are also borne by Balasaheb Wagh himself. Some organizations and generous individuals have come forward to offer financial support for this noble cause, but the aid remains insufficient. Balasaheb Wagh, his wife Mrs. Hema Wagh, his mother Mrs. Mangal Wagh, and his brothers Siddharam and Yogesh, along with other family members, are all actively and devotedly engaged in the mission of running this Ashram School.
“रमाबाई आंबेडकर निवासी आश्रमशाळेत एक दिवस…!”
दोन दिवस झाले सूर्य नारायणाने निव्वळ आग ओकणे सुरू ठेवले आहे. अशा तप्त वातावरणात आर्थिक दुर्बल दिन-दलित वर्गातील मुलांसाठी ज्ञानदानाचे कार्य करणाऱ्या दक्षिण सोलापूर तालुक्यातील निंबर्गी येथील रमाबाई आंबेडकर अनुसूचित जाती आश्रमशाळेला भेट देण्याचा योग आला.
भारतरत्न डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांच्या जयंतीनिमित्त आयोजित करण्यात आलेल्या कार्यक्रमाचे प्रमुख पाहुणे म्हणून उपस्थित रहावे असे आग्रहाचे निमंत्रण आश्रमशाळेचे संस्थापक अध्यक्ष बाळासाहेब वाघ आणि सिद्धाराम वाघ यांनी दिले होते. एक वेगळा अनुभव आणि मनाला ऊर्जा देणारा आनंद या आश्रमशाळेला भेट दिल्यानंतर झाला.
सोलापूरचा उन्हाळा हा फार चर्चेचा विषय असतो. सुर्योदयापासूनच वातावरणात उष्मा वाढायला सुरुवात होते. या मोसमात ४० डिग्री सेल्सिअस हे तापमान अतिशय सर्वसाधारण तापमान ठरते. सकाळ उलटून गेली की उष्म्याचा पारा वर चढू लागतो. अशा वातावरणात तुम्ही घराबाहेर एक पाऊल देखील टाकू शकत नाही. मात्र मुलांचा उत्साह आणि संस्थापक बंधूंचा आग्रह मोडवला नाही. एव्हढी उष्म्याचा तीव्र लाट असतानाही लहान मुले आपल्या स्वागतासाठी उत्सुक होत आपली वाट पहात आहेत हा निरोपच मनाला सुखाचा गारवा देणारा होता.
विविध गुणदर्शनाचा कार्यक्रम
भारतीय राज्यघटनेचे शिल्पकार, भारतरत्न डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांच्या जयंतीनिमित्त आश्रमशाळेने विद्यार्थ्यांच्या विविध गुणदर्शनाच्या कार्यक्रमाचे आयोजन केले होते. माझ्या सोबतच युवा पँथरचे राज्य अध्यक्ष आतिष मोहन बनसोडे हे देखील प्रमुख पाहुणे म्हणून उपस्थित होते. तर निंबर्गी ग्रामपंचायतीचे सदस्य येदा दुपारगुडे, शालेय व्यवस्थापन समितीचे अध्यक्ष हुसेन कांबळे, शिवलिंग दुपारगुडे, आनंद दुपारगुडे, परमेश्वर दुपारगुडे यांची प्रमुख उपस्थिती होती. आश्रमशाळेच्या मुख्याध्यापिका सौ. प्रतिभा जाधव यांच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली शाळेच्या शिक्षक वृंदांनी विद्यार्थ्यांच्या सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमाची निर्मिती केली होती.
विनाअनुदानित आश्रमशाळा
इतर नियमित शाळांपेक्षा निवासी आश्रमशाळेची कार्यपद्धती ही खूप वेगळी असते. मुळातच अशिक्षित आणि आर्थिक विपन्नावस्थेत असणाऱ्या दलित आणि शोषित समाजातील मुलांना शिक्षणाच्या मूळ प्रवाहात आणण्यासाठी शासनाने आश्रमशाळा ही संकल्पना अस्तित्वात आणली. मात्र इतर विनाअनुदानित सर्वसाधारण शाळा आणि विनाअनुदानित आश्रमशाळांची स्थिती यामध्ये खूप तफावत असते. हा एक स्वतंत्र विषय होवू शकतो. विनाअनुदानित आणि पुन्हा निवासी आश्रमशाळा सुरू करणे म्हणजे आर्थिक कसरत असते. इथे दानशूर व्यक्तींकडून मिळणारी आर्थिक मदत देखील अपुरी पडत असते. संस्थापकालाच आर्थिक झळ सोसत ज्ञानदानाचे कार्य सुरू ठेवावे लागते.
संस्थापक बाळासाहेब वाघ यांचे शैक्षणिक कार्य
बाळासाहेब वाघ हे स्वतः अतिशय प्रतिकूल आर्थिक परिस्थितीतून शिक्षण घेत शिक्षक म्हणून जिल्हा परिषदेच्या शाळेत सेवा देत आहेत. त्यांच्या गुणवत्तापूर्ण अध्यापन कौशल्यामुळे त्यांना राष्ट्रपतींच्या हस्ते आदर्श शिक्षक पुरस्कार देवून गौरविण्यात आले आहे. ‘सर फाऊंडेशन’च्या माध्यमातून त्यांनी शैक्षणिक उपक्रमांवर केलेले संशोधन कार्य बहुचर्चित आहे. त्यांच्या पत्नी देखील राज्य शासनाचा आदर्श शिक्षिका पुरस्कार प्राप्त आहेत. २०१३ मध्ये मान्यता मिळालेल्या रमाबाई आंबेडकर अनुसूचित विनाअनुदानित निवासी आश्रमशाळेची उभारणी करताना त्यांना अनंत अडचणींना तोंड द्यावे लागले आहे.
स्वतःच्या शेतजमिनीत उभारली आश्रमशाळा
२०२१ पासून पूर्णक्षमतेने सुरू असलेल्या निंबर्गी येथील या आश्रमशाळेची इमारत बाळासाहेब वाघ यांनी स्वतःच्या शेतजमिनीतच उभारली आहे. दहा वर्गखोल्या आणि मुलींसाठी व मुलांसाठी स्वतंत्र निवास व्यवस्था असलेल्या या आश्रमशाळेला विस्तिर्ण असे पटांगण आहे. बोअरवेलच्या साहाय्याने पुरेसा पाणीपुरवठा केला जातो. सध्या विद्यार्थी आणि विद्यार्थिनी मिळून १८० पटसंख्या आहे.
दोन वेळेचे भोजन अन विद्यार्थ्यांच्या गरजा
शिक्षणाची गोडी लागावी म्हणून आश्रमशाळेत दाखल करून घेतलेल्या विद्यार्थ्यांची आर्थिक आणि कौटुंबिक स्थिती ही अतिशय विपरीत असते. या मुलांना दोन वेळेच्या खाण्याची देखील भ्रांत असते. जवळपास १०० निवासी विद्यार्थ्यांचे रोजचे दोन वेळेचे भोजन, सकाळचा चहा आणि नाश्ता बनविण्याचे कार्य बाळासाहेब वाघ यांच्या मातोश्री श्रीमती मंगल वाघ यांच्या देखरेखीखाली होते. याशिवाय मुलांच्या शालेय गणवेशासह शैक्षणिक साहित्यासाठी खर्च हा संस्थापक म्हणून स्वतः बाळासाहेब वाघ यांनाच करावा लागतो. ज्ञानदानाच्या कार्यास मदत म्हणून काही संस्था व दानशूर व्यक्ती आर्थिक मदतीसाठी पुढे येत आहेत. पण ही मदत पुरेशी होत नाही. आश्रमशाळेच्या या कार्यास बाळासाहेब वाघ यांच्यासह त्यांच्या पत्नी सौ. हेमा वाघ मातोश्री श्रीमती मंगल वाघ, बंधू सिद्धाराम आणि योगेश यांच्यासह परिवारातील सर्व सदस्य सश्रम कार्यरत आहेत.
