Every name has a story behind it.
My name is ‘Mukund’—simple, traditional, and deeply rooted in Marathi culture.
But beyond the given name lies a different identity—a nickname!
In my life, it came rather late, but gradually, it became my true identity.
‘Appa’—a word that carries affection, respect, and a sense of close bonding.
I received this nickname during my journey in theatre and journalism.
Today, it’s not just a name people call me by—it has become a relationship filled with love.
❤️ 1️. What’s in a Name?
‘Mukund’ is my given name—just three syllables, as sweet and easy to pronounce in Marathi as it sounds.
There was never any need to shorten it further.
That’s why, during my childhood, no one ever gave me a nickname.
❤️ 2️. No Nickname in Childhood
As a child, none of my friends, neighbors, or relatives ever felt the need to come up with a special name for me.
‘Mukund’ itself was enough to create an identity.
Though the name wasn’t unique, it carried a certain simplicity that made it special.
❤️ 3️. A New Identity in Theatre
However, as I ventured into theatre and journalism, a new identity began to form.
My younger colleagues gave me a name – ‘Appa’.
At first, it felt a bit strange, but soon I understood the affection behind it.
❤️ 4️. The Meaning Behind ‘Appa’
The word ‘Appa’ doesn’t just imply an elder by age—it also reflects wisdom, guidance, and support.
In Maharashtra and Karnataka, this nickname is used with great fondness.
Over time, as I kept hearing it, the name grew on me.
❤️ 5️. From Unfamiliar to Endearing
Initially, when someone called out “Appa,” I would pause, unsure if they were addressing me.
I couldn’t always tell who they meant.
But gradually, the name became a natural part of my life.
❤️ 6️. Now I Love My Nickname Too
Today, many people don’t even know my original name—they know me only as ‘Appa’.
This nickname has now become a bond of affection.
The fact that people feel connected to me is what truly matters—because maintaining relationships is far more valuable than just a name.

प्रत्येक नावामागे असते एक कहाणी.
माझं नाव ‘मुकुंद’… साधं, पारंपरिक आणि मराठमोळं.
पण नावाच्या पलीकडे असतं एक वेगळं अस्तित्व – टोपणनाव!
माझ्या आयुष्यात ते उशिरा आलं, पण हळूहळू तेच माझी ओळख बनलं.
‘अप्पा’ – एक असा शब्द, ज्यामध्ये आपुलकी, आदर आणि नात्याचा जिव्हाळा दडलेला आहे.
हे टोपणनाव मिळालं नाट्य आणि पत्रकारितेच्या प्रवासात.
आज ते नाव केवळ ओळख नाही, तर एक प्रेमाचं नातं झालं आहे.
❤️१️. नावात काय असतं?
‘मुकुंद’ हे माझं मूळ नाव – केवळ तीन अक्षरांचं, मराठीत जितकं सहज उच्चारता येतं, तितकंच गोड.
पण त्यात आणखी शॉर्ट कट करायची गरजच पडली नाही.
म्हणूनच बालपणात माझ्यासाठी कुणीही टोपणनाव वापरलं नाही.
❤️२️. बालपणात टोपणनावाचा अभाव
लहानपणी मित्र, शेजारी किंवा नातेवाईक कोणालाही माझ्यासाठी एखादं खास नाव ठेवावं असं वाटलंच नाही.
कारण ‘मुकुंद’ हे नावच पुरेसं ओळख निर्माण करणारं होतं.
माझं नाव वेगळं नव्हतं, पण त्यात साधेपणाची एक खास जाणीव होती.
❤️३️. नाट्यक्षेत्रातील नवी ओळख
मात्र, पुढे नाट्य आणि पत्रकारितेच्या क्षेत्रात काम करताना माझी ओळख वेगळी घडू लागली.
कनिष्ठ सहकाऱ्यांनी मला एक नाव दिलं – ‘अप्पा’.
सुरुवातीला मला थोडं अजब वाटलं, पण नंतर त्यामागचं प्रेम समजलं.
❤️४️. ‘अप्पा’ या शब्दामागचं अर्थविश्व
‘अप्पा’ या शब्दात केवळ वयाने मोठा व्यक्तीच नाही, तर अनुभव, सल्ला, आधार यांचीही छाया असते.
महाराष्ट्र आणि कर्नाटकात हे टोपणनाव मोठ्या आपुलकीने वापरलं जातं.
ते संबोधन ऐकताना हळूहळू मन त्यात गुंतत गेलं.
❤️५️.अपरिचिततेपासून आपुलकीपर्यंत
सुरुवातीला ‘अप्पा’ म्हणून कोणी हाक मारलं, की क्षणभर मी दचकायचो.
कोणाला उद्देशून हाक दिली याचा अंदाज लागत नसे.
पण जसजसा काळ गेला, तसं हे नाव माझ्या आयुष्याचा भाग बनत गेलं.
❤️६️.आता टोपणनावावरही प्रेम आहे
आज अनेकांना माझं मूळ नाव माहीतही नसतं – ते मला ‘अप्पा’ म्हणूनच ओळखतात.
हे टोपणनाव आता एक स्नेहबंध झाला आहे.
लोक माझ्याशी जोडले गेले, हाच माझ्यासाठी मोठा आनंद आहे – कारण नातं टिकवणं नावापेक्षा अधिक मोलाचं असतं.
