Sometimes, stories that seem utterly dull at first glance are the ones that teach us the most — about our profession, our patience, and our purpose. As a journalist for over three decades, I have often faced the challenge of turning dry data into engaging content. One such moment arrived when I had to report on the mineral wealth of my home district. It wasn’t about glamour or political drama, but about copper reserves and geological data. What seemed boring on the surface eventually led me to a deeper understanding of storytelling itself. Because even the dustiest corners of journalism hold the power to shine — if seen in the right light.
🔸 1. The True Face of News – Boring but Necessary
Not every news story is exciting in the journey of journalism. Some topics lack the ‘headline appeal,’ yet they are crucial for society. That’s why they must be covered. This is a professional perspective, but it’s through such challenges that we grow as journalists.
🔸 2. Unearthed News – Literally!
I wrote a research-based series on the mineral wealth beneath the soil of Solapur district. Initially, the topic seemed like just another file lying on the desk. But as I spoke to the mineral department, geologists, and local authorities, I realized its socio-economic significance.
🔸 3. Chemistry and News – A Unique Challenge
Writing about copper, its compounds, its underground reserves, and its economic utility made me feel like a scientist at times. Translating this scientific content into the structured style of journalism was a real challenge. Because this writing was meant for common readers — not just experts.
🔸 4. Understanding the Reader’s Perspective
Readers of such reports think differently. They don’t want entertainment; they want data, facts, and grounded information. So, the tone has to be serious — without being dull. Striking that balance is the true skill of journalism.
🔸 5. Discipline Born from Dullness
Even though the experience felt boring, it taught me writing discipline, the habit of collecting structured details, and how to conduct in-depth research. This experience made my storytelling more mature. Because every journalist must stay committed to both neutrality and factual honesty.
🔸 6. Every Topic Has a Spark
When this series was finally published, it received a positive response from readers. Some even said, “We never imagined mineral resources could be written about so interestingly.” That was the true reward. Because no matter what the subject is — every topic holds a spark; it just needs to be discovered.

निरस आणि कंटाळवाणा वाटणारा एखादा बातमीतला विषय शोधा. मग विचार करा की त्याचा तुमच्या आयुष्यात कसा संबंध आहे. आणि त्यावर लिहा.

कधी कधी पहिल्या नजरेत अगदी कंटाळवाण्या वाटणाऱ्या गोष्टीच आपल्याला सगळ्यात जास्त शिकवतात — आपल्या व्यवसायाबद्दल, संयमाबद्दल आणि उद्देशाबद्दल. पत्रकारितेच्या तीन दशकांहून अधिक प्रवासात कोरड्या, तथ्यप्रधान माहितीला रसपूर्ण स्वरूप देण्याचं आव्हान अनेकदा माझ्यासमोर आलं आहे. असाच एक प्रसंग आला, जेव्हा मला माझ्या मूळ जिल्ह्यातील खनिज संपत्तीवर बातमी तयार करावी लागली. ना त्यात झगमगाट होता, ना राजकीय नाट्य — केवळ तांब्याचे साठे आणि भूगर्भीय माहिती. सुरुवातीला ही बाब फारच कंटाळवाणी वाटली, पण हळूहळू ती मला कथा सांगण्याच्या कलेचा खोल अर्थ शिकवून गेली. कारण पत्रकारितेच्या सगळ्यात धुळकट कोपऱ्यातसुद्धा चमकण्याची ताकद असते — जर ती योग्य दृष्टिकोनातून पाहिली गेली, तर.
🔸 १. बातम्यांचा खरा चेहरा – कंटाळवाणा पण आवश्यक
पत्रकारितेच्या प्रवासात प्रत्येक बातमी ही रंजक असतेच असं नाही. काही विषय असे असतात की ज्यांच्यात ‘हेडलाईन’चं वजन नसतं. पण समाजासाठी ते महत्त्वाचे असतात. म्हणूनच त्या बातम्या कराव्याच लागतात. हा व्यावसायिक दृष्टीकोन आहे, पण त्यातूनच एक पत्रकार म्हणून आपली क्षमता वाढते.
🔸 २. खणून काढलेली बातमी – शब्दशः!
सोलापूर जिल्ह्यातील भूगर्भातील खनिज संपत्तीवर मी एक संशोधनात्मक लेखमालिका लिहिली. सुरुवातीला हा विषय केवळ ‘डेस्कवर पडलेली फाईल’ वाटली. पण जेव्हा मी खनिज विभाग, भूगर्भशास्त्रज्ञ, स्थानिक अधिकारी यांच्याशी बोललो तेव्हा लक्षात आलं की ही तर सामाजिक-आर्थिक दृष्टीने फार महत्त्वाची बाब आहे.
🔸 ३. रसायनशास्त्र आणि बातम्या – एक अनोखा सामना
तांबे, त्याचे संयुग, जमिनीतील साठा, आणि त्याचा आर्थिक उपयोग – हे सगळं लिहिताना मी स्वतःला एखाद्या शास्त्रज्ञासारखं वाटू लागलो. त्याची भाषा पत्रकारितेच्या साचेबद्ध शैलीत आणणं ही खरंतर एक मोठी कसोटी होती. कारण हे लिखाण सर्वसामान्यांसाठी होतं – केवळ तज्ज्ञांसाठी नव्हे.
🔸 ४. वाचकांचा दृष्टिकोन समजून घेणं
या प्रकारच्या बातम्या वाचणारे लोक वेगळ्या दृष्टिकोनातून विचार करतात. त्यांना मनोरंजन नको असतं, त्यांना आकडे, तथ्य, आणि स्थायिक माहिती हवी असते. त्यामुळे भाषेतील शैली गंभीर असावी लागते – पण त्यात कंटाळवाणेपणा न येऊ देता. हे संतुलन साधणं म्हणजे खरी पत्रकारितेची कसब.
🔸 ५. निरसतेतून निर्माण झालेली शिस्त
हा अनुभव कंटाळवाणा जरी वाटला, तरी त्यातून मला लिहिण्याची शिस्त, मुद्देसूद तपशील गोळा करण्याची सवय आणि सखोल संशोधन कसं करावं हे शिकायला मिळालं. या अनुभवाने माझं ‘storytelling’ अधिक परिपक्व केलं. कारण प्रत्येक पत्रकाराला ‘तटस्थतेबरोबरच तथ्यांशी प्रामाणिक’ राहावं लागतं.
🔸 ६. प्रत्येक विषयात असतो एक प्रकाशबिंदू
शेवटी जेव्हा ही लेखमालिका प्रकाशित झाली, तेव्हा वाचकांनी सकारात्मक प्रतिसाद दिला. काहींनी तर म्हटलं की “आम्हाला कधी वाटलंच नव्हतं की खनिजसंपत्तीवरही एवढं रंजक लिहिता येईल.” हेच खरे समाधान. कारण काहीही असो – प्रत्येक विषयात एक प्रकाशबिंदू असतो, फक्त तो शोधायचा असतो.
