जुन्या शहरांच्या सुधारणांवर लक्ष केंद्रित करावे….!

How would you design the city of the future?

Before designing future cities, we must prioritize the improvement of old, existing cities. On July 31st, I wrote an article on my blog titled “Ancient Cities Like Old Things.” Establishing a new city today would be just as difficult and expensive. It’s hard to say that any country has succeeded in providing basic amenities to all its cities with full capacity. The main reason for this is the growing population, along with the increasing rate of migration from villages to cities in search of employment.

If we want to plan future cities, we must first undertake significant work on the basic facilities of old cities rather than establishing new ones. The most important aspects include drainage systems, water supply, electricity supply, internal roads, and most importantly, making cities free of garbage. While these tasks fall under the responsibility of the respective governments, keeping the cities clean is the duty of the citizens. Therefore, it is essential to create awareness among them about cleanliness. Instead of insisting on building cities of dreams or futuristic cities, let’s transform our existing cities into dream cities. The cities currently in existence are at least a thousand years old. Leaving them in a dilapidated state to establish new ones is an impractical dream.

भविष्यातील शहर डिझाईन करण्यापूर्वी जी जुनी झालेली शहरे आहेत, त्यांच्या सुधारणांचा विषय प्राधान्याने हाती घ्यावा लागेल. मी मागे ३१ जुलै रोजी ब्लॉगवर “जुन्या वस्तूंसारखी झालीत पुरातन शहरे” हे आर्टिकल लिहिले आहे. आता नव्याने शहर वसविणे तितकेच अवघड आणि खर्चिक होणार आहे. कारण कोणत्याच देशात सर्व शहरांमध्ये मूलभूत सुविधा पूर्ण क्षमतेने पुरविण्यात त्या-त्या देशातील सरकारे आणि यंत्रणा यशस्वी झालेत असे म्हणता येणार नाही. याचे महत्वाचे कारण म्हणजे वाढती लोकसंख्या.
याबरोबरच रोजगार मिळविण्यासाठी गावाकडून शहरांकडे स्थलांतरित होण्याचे वाढलेले प्रमाण. जर आपल्याला भविष्यातील शहराचा आराखडा तयार करायचाच असेल तर नवीन शहर वसाविण्यापेक्षा आहे त्या जुन्या शहरांच्या मूलभूत सुविधांवर मोठे काम करावे लागेल. सर्वात महत्वाचे ड्रेनेज सिस्टीम, पाणीपुरवठा, वीजपुरवठा, अंतर्गत रस्ते आणि सर्वात महत्वाचे कचरामुक्त शहरे करावी लागतील. अर्थात ही सर्व कामे त्या-त्या देशातील सरकारची असली तरी शहर स्वच्छ ठेवण्याचे काम शहरवासीयांचे आहे. याकरिता त्यांच्यामध्ये स्वच्छतेबद्दल जागरूकता निर्माण करणे गरजेचे आहे. निव्वळ स्वप्नातील किंवा भविष्यातील शहर साकारण्याचा अट्टाहास करण्यापेक्षा आहे त्या शहरांना स्वप्नातील शहर बनवू या. सध्या अस्तित्वात असलेली शहरे ही किमान एक हजार वर्षे जुनी आहेत. ती बकाल अवस्थेत सोडून नवी शहरे वसविणे हे स्वप्नच अव्यवहारीक आहे.
