Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

If you ask me, “Who are the most famous or infamous people you have met?” my answer would simply be that we tend to remember meetings with famous people. We usually make a deliberate effort to meet famous people, or if by chance we happen to meet one unexpectedly, that memory stays cherished in a corner of our heart for a lifetime. The same isn’t true for infamous people. We never wish to accidentally cross paths with an infamous person. And even if such a meeting happens by accident, the wise thing to do is to forget about it.

• I have been working in the newspaper industry for the past 28 years. Meeting new people every day, gathering information about them, and if I happen to meet famous individuals, finding and sharing the inspirational aspects of their lives with readers. My job for the past 28 years has been to give deserving people the right recognition and help them reach the general public.
• However, I have never tried to meet any infamous person. Even if I had to meet a criminal or infamous individual in relation to a news report, it was purely for work, and I erased that memory immediately. This is because infamous people are not role models for society. Even if I met an infamous person who had been convicted, for the sake of reporting in the courthouse, I never gave much importance to those encounters. In my view, infamy is still a form of fame. By giving such people attention, we unintentionally glorify those who have committed wrongdoings, which is why I don’t hold onto those memories.
• On the other hand, I have kept my meetings with famous people safely tucked away in my heart. I have many such memories, a treasure trove of them. If I were to list their names, there wouldn’t be enough space to write them all. Political leaders, literary figures, artists, teachers, entrepreneurs, athletes, painters, skilled technicians, scientists, researchers, thinkers — I have had the fortune of interacting with famous individuals from all these fields. I can say that my life has been enriched by these experiences. Meeting such people makes one realize, “The world is truly a beautiful place.”

“प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींच्या भेटीच आपण लक्षात ठेवायच्या असतात…!”

मला जर तुम्ही विचाराल की, “तुम्ही भेटलेल्या सर्वात प्रसिद्ध किंवा कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्ती कोण आहेत ?” तर माझे उत्तर एव्हढेच असेल की, प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींच्या भेटीच आपण लक्षात ठेवायच्या असतात. म्हणजे आपण प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींना अगदी प्रयत्नपूर्वक ठरवूनच भेटत असतो किंवा न ठरवता देखील अचानक प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तीबरोबर आपली भेट घडून आली तर ती आठवण आपण आयुष्यभर हृदयाच्या एका कप्प्यात जपून ठेवतो. तसं कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींच्या बाबत नसतं. आयुष्यात चुकूनसुद्धा कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्तीची भेट व्हावी असे आपल्याला वाटत नसते. आणि तशी अपघाताने भेट झाली तरी आपण ती विसरून जाण्यातच शहाणपणा समजतो.

• मी गेल्या २८ वर्षांपासून वृत्तपत्र क्षेत्रात कार्यरत आहे. रोज नव्या व्यक्तींना भेटणे, त्यांच्याबद्दलची माहिती संकलित करणे, प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींची भेट झाली तर त्यांच्यामधील प्रेरणादायी गोष्टी शोधून त्या वाचकांपर्यंत पोहोचविणे. गुणवत्ताधारक व्यक्तीला योग्य ती प्रसिद्धी देवून त्याला सर्वसामान्यांपर्यंत पोहोचविणे हेच तर काम गेली २८ वर्षे करतोय.
• पण मी आजपर्यंत कधीच कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्तीची भेट घेण्याचा प्रयत्न केला नाही. बातमीच्या अनुषंगाने एखाद्या गुन्हेगाराची किंवा कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्तीची भेट झाली असली तरी केवळ कामाचा भाग म्हणून मी भेटलो आणि ती आठवण कायमची पुसून देखील टाकली. कारण कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्ती ह्या काही समाजाला मार्गदर्शक ठरणाऱ्या व्यक्ती नसतात. अगदी शिक्षा झालेल्या कुप्रसिद्ध व्यक्तीला देखील न्यायालयाच्या आवारात मी बातमीसाठी म्हणून भेटलो असलो तरी मी त्या भेटींना कधीच फार महत्व दिले नाही. माझ्या दृष्टीने कुप्रसिध्दी ही देखील एकप्रकारची प्रसिध्दीच असते. अशी प्रसिद्धी दिल्याने वाईट किंवा कुकर्म करणाऱ्या लोकांचे आपण उदात्तीकरण केल्यासारखे असते म्हणूनच मी अशा लोकांच्या भेटी लक्षात ठेवत नाही.
• प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींच्या भेटी मात्र मी माझ्या हृदयातील कप्प्यात सुरक्षित ठेवल्या आहेत. अशा अनेक आठवणी आहेत. माझ्याकडे अशा आठवणींचा खजिनाच आहे. नावे सांगायची म्हंटलं तर लिहायला जागा अपुरी पडेल. राजकीय, साहित्यिक, कलावंत, शिक्षक, उद्योगपती, खेळाडू, चित्रकार, कुशल तंत्रज्ञ, शास्त्रज्ञ, संशोधक, विचारवंत अशा अनेक क्षेत्रातील प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींचा सहवास मिळाल्यानेच माझे आयुष्य समृद्ध झाले आहे असे मी म्हणतो. “जग खूप सुंदर आहे” याची प्रचिती आपल्याला अशा व्यक्तींच्या भेटीतून येत असते.
