If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

When Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian astronaut to reach space, made contact from space, the then Prime Minister of India, the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, asked him a question, “How does India look to you from space?” To this, Rakesh Sharma replied, “India looks the most beautiful to me in the whole world.”

Now, as I approach my sixties, if someone were to ask me, “If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?” My answer would be only one – India. Because no matter how beautiful the world may be, my India is the most beautiful in the entire world.

Coincidentally, November 14 is my son Soham's birthday. He is currently working in Japan. As a birthday gift, I am dedicating this article, based on the topic provided by the Daily Prompt, to him on the eve of his birthday.

• World travel is truly a dream for everyone. Many countries across the globe, adorned with diverse languages and scenic beauty, are blessed by nature. To enjoy this natural splendor, not just millions but billions of tourists flock to these destinations every year. Some places captivate tourists so much that they are tempted to settle there permanently. But do they actually stay there forever? After enjoying their travel, they begin to miss their homeland, their city, and their soil. Then, they feel a strong pull to return to their motherland. Why does this happen?
• Because the place where we are born, the society, the religion, the country, and the region we grow up in shape our lives. The mother who gives birth to us provides the first drop of nectar through her breast, giving us life, and it is by looking at her that we learn to say our first word, “Mother.” When our eyes first open with the ability to see the world, we smile and recognize the family gathered around us.
• As we take our first steps, stumbling around the house, that is our entire world. Later, during our education, we learn about the world from our teachers. This knowledge sparks our desire to see the world, a fascination that turns into a dream for many. Some fulfill that dream, while others do not. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love our country or region.
• For example, the Switzerland I have seen in movies fascinates me greatly, but I have never even considered the idea of world travel. I don’t even have a passport. My son, on the other hand, has moved to Japan for work.
• My friends often tell me, “Get your passport ready. Sooner or later, you’ll have to go visit your son.” I agree with them and plan to get my passport. Visiting my son will give me a chance to see Japan’s scenic sites. But at this stage of my life, I certainly cannot think about moving to Japan permanently. Changing language, religion, customs, food culture, and lifestyle would mean changing my entire personality—something that is not possible at this point in life. I will always love my language, my region, and my country.

“सगळ्या जगात सुंदर भारत देश माझा…!”

अंतराळात पोहचलेले पहिले भारतीय अंतराळवीर राकेश शर्मा यांनी जेंव्हा अंतराळातून संपर्क साधला तेंव्हा भारताच्या तत्कालीन पंतप्रधान कै. श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी यांनी त्यांना एक प्रश्न विचारला “तुम्हाला अंतराळातून भारत कसा दिसतोय ?” तेंव्हा राकेश शर्मा म्हणाले,”सगळ्या जगात सुंदर मला भारत देश दिसतोय.” आता साठीच्या जवळ पोहोचल्यावर जर मला कुणी विचारलं,”तुम्ही जगात कुठेही राहू शकत असाल, तर ते कुठे असेल ?”. माझं या प्रश्नावर एकच उत्तर असेल फक्त भारत देश. कारण जग कितीही सुंदर असले तरी सगळ्या जगात सुंदर फक्त माझा भारत देश आहे.

योगायोगाने १४ नोव्हेंबर हा माझा मुलगा सोहम याचा जन्म दिवस आहे. तो सध्या जपानमध्ये जॉब करतोय. त्याच्या वाढदिवसाच्या पूर्वसंध्येला डेली प्रॉम्प्टने दिलेल्या विषयावरील आर्टिकल मी त्याला वाढदिवसाची गिफ्ट म्हणून देतोय.

• जग भ्रमंती हे खरं म्हणजे सर्वांचंच स्वप्न असतं. अनेक भाषा आणि सौंदर्यस्थळांनी नटलेल्या जगातील अनेक देश हे निसर्गाचं वरदान लाभलेले देश आहेत. या निसर्ग सौंदर्याचा आनंद घेण्यासाठी लाखो नव्हे तर करोडो पर्यटक अशा पर्यंतनस्थळांना दरवर्षी भेट देण्यासाठी गर्दी करत असतात. त्यातली काही ठिकाणे तर पर्यटकांना इतकी आवडतात की तिथेच कायमस्वरूपी राहण्याचा त्यांना मोह होतो. पण ते तिथे कायमस्वरूपी राहतात का ? तर पर्यटनाचा आनंद लुटल्यानंतर त्यांना त्यांच्या देशाची, त्यांच्या शहराची, त्यांच्या मातीची आठवण येते. मग परत आपल्या मायभूमीकडे जाण्याची ओढ लागते. हे असं का होत ?
• तर जिथे आपण जन्मलो ते ठिकाण, तो समाज, तो धर्म, तो देश आणि तो प्रदेश यातूनच आपण आपले आयुष्य घडविलेले असते. जन्म देणारी आई तिच्या स्तनावाटे पहिल्यांदा अमृताचा थेंब आपल्या ओठाद्वारे आपल्या पोटात पोहचवून आपल्याला जीवन देते, तर “आई” हा पहिला शब्द आपण तिच्याकडेच पाहून शिकतो. जेंव्हा पहिल्यांदा उघडणाऱ्या आपल्या डोळ्यांमध्ये जग पाहण्याची ताकद येते तेंव्हा आपल्या अवतीभवती जमा झालेल्या आप्त स्वकीयांना पाहूनच आपण गालातल्या गालात हसत ओळख देतो.
• पहिल्यांदा जमिनीवर पाऊल टाकताना घरभर धडपडत असतो. तेच आपलं जग असतं. पुढे शिक्षण घेताना शिक्षकांकडून जगाची माहिती मिळते. त्यातून आपल्याला जग फिरून पाहण्याचे आकर्षण वाढते. हे आकर्षणचं पुढे कित्येकांचे स्वप्न बनते. काहीजणांचे स्वप्न साकार होते तर काही जणांचे होत नाही. पण म्हणून आपला देश, आपला प्रदेश आवडत नाही असे होत नाही.

• मला सिनेमांमधून पाहिलेले स्वित्झर्लंड खूप आकर्षित करते. पण मी आजवर जगभ्रमंतीला जाण्याचा विचार देखील मनात आणला नाही. माझा पासपोर्ट देखील तयार नाही. तेच माझा मुलगा मात्र नोकरीच्या निमित्ताने जपानला जावून राहिलाय.
• माझे मित्र मला आता नेहमी सांगतात, “तुझा पासपोर्ट तयार करून ठेव. आज ना उद्या तुला मुलाला भेटायला जावं लागेल.” मला त्यांचं हे म्हणणं पटतंय. मी माझा पासपोर्ट देखील करून घेणार आहे. मुलाच्या निमित्ताने मला जपानमधील प्रेक्षणीय स्थळे पाहण्याचा योग येईल. पण म्हणून मी जपानला जावून कायमचे राहण्याचा विचार या वयात तर नक्कीच करू शकणार नाही. भाषा, धर्म, आचार-विचार, खाद्यसंस्कृती आणि राहणीमान बदलणे म्हणजे संपूर्ण व्यक्तिमत्व बदलणे आता या वयाच्या टप्प्यावर कदापिही शक्य नाही. मला माझी भाषा, माझा प्रदेश आणि माझा देशच प्रिय असणार.
