What cities do you want to visit?

Fundamentally, humans are more colonial in nature compared to other animals. It is in the pursuit of stability in life that humans engage in "wandering." Once stability is achieved, this wandering transforms into merely exploring and experiencing something new.

A job in journalism and a passion for theater have given me the opportunity to travel extensively within my home state, Maharashtra. I have visited a wide range of places, from spiritual and religious sites to historical and ancient landmarks, as well as industrial hubs and cities undergoing rapid transformation. I have also formed good acquaintances through friendships in these travels.

But then again, Maharashtra alone does not represent the entirety of India. Since Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are close to the city where I live, I have explored cities like Gulbarga, Bidar, Vijayapura, and Basavakalyan in Karnataka, as well as Hyderabad and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. During my college years, I also went on a trip to North India, visiting Delhi. That sums up the extent of India I have seen and experienced so far.

• Now, I stand on the threshold of turning sixty, slowly freeing myself from responsibilities. The urge to explore still remains strong. I wish to first see my diverse and vibrant India, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Following the sequence of ‘First the country, then abroad,’ I plan to visit the major cities of India before considering travel abroad.
• Of course, while one can dream endlessly of visiting major international cities, as a middle-class individual, there are several hurdles to overcome to make that a reality. Whether that will be possible or not is something only time can tell.
• People from my generation often plan their travels during retirement, which, in itself, is flawed. The realization of such travel dreams depends not only on physical health but also on the money saved after retirement. Those whose children live abroad might have an added advantage in this regard.
• My son, Soham, works in Japan, and that could offer me an opportunity to visit the major cities of Japan. With this in mind, I have already begun dreaming. I’m researching and gathering information about Hamamatsu, where Soham resides, as well as Tokyo and other scenic and historic places in Japan. One key aspect is learning the language—at least enough Japanese to hold basic conversations. Without this, the experience of travel might not be as fulfilling.
• On that note, I also wish to visit Shakespeare’s homeland someday.
  Here’s a little anecdote from my childhood: I often had a recurring dream. In it, I found myself on a deserted island, brushing off and scraping away layers of salt stuck to my wings. After some rest, I would take off into the skies again. Strange, isn’t it? I still wonder—what could have been the meaning of that dream?

“आधी भारतातील मग इतर देशातील शहरे पाहीन….!”

मुळात माणूस हा इतर प्राण्यांपेक्षा जास्त प्रमाणात वसाहतवादी आहे. आयुष्यातील स्थिरता मिळविण्यासाठीच माणूस "भ्रमंती" करत असतो. एकदा का त्याच्या आयुष्याला स्थिरता मिळाली की मग  त्याची भटकंती ही फक्त नवे काहीतरी पाहणे, एव्हढीच राहते.

पत्रकारितेच्या क्षेत्रातील नोकरी आणि नाटकाचा छंद यामुळे स्वभाषिक प्रांतात म्हणजेच महाराष्ट्रात माझी आजवर चांगलीच भ्रमंती झाली आहे. अगदी अध्यात्मिक-धार्मिक स्थळांपासून ते ऐतिहासिक-पुरातन, औद्योगिक, नव्याने बदलणारी शहरे म्हणून महाराष्ट्रातील बहुतांश शहरे मी पाहिली आहेत. तिथे बऱ्यापैकी मैत्रीतून ओळखी देखील वाढविल्या आहेत. पण पुन्हा तेच…! एकटा महाराष्ट्र प्रदेश म्हणजे संपूर्ण भारत देश नाही. बाकी मी रहात असलेल्या शहरापासून कर्नाटक राज्य आणि आंध्रप्रदेश जवळ असल्याने गुलबर्गा,बिदर, विजयपूर, बसवकल्याण ही कर्नाटकातील शहरे तर हैदराबाद, तिरुपती ही आंध्रप्रदेशातील शहरे पाहून झालीत. महाविद्यालयीन शिक्षण घेताना ट्रिप म्हणून दिल्लीपर्यंत उत्तर भारतात फिरून आलोय. एव्हढाच भारत देश मी आजवर पाहिलाय-अनुभवलाय.

• आता वयाच्या साठीच्या उंबरठ्यावर आलोय. आत्ताही जबाबदाऱ्यातून मोकळा होतोय. भटकंतीची उर्मी अजून कायम आहे. त्यामुळे आधी काश्मीर ते कन्याकुमारी असा वैविध्याने नटलेला माझा भारत देश संपूर्ण पहायची माझी इच्छा आहे. ‘आधी देश मग परदेश’ या क्रमवारीने देशातील प्रमुख शहरांना भेटी दिल्यानंतर मग परदेशात जाण्याचा विचार करेन.
• अर्थात परदेशातील प्रमुख शहरांना भेटी देण्याचे आपण कितीही स्वप्ने पाहिली तरी तिथपर्यंत पोहोचण्यासाठी मध्यमवर्गीय म्हणून आपल्याला बरेच अडथळे पार करावे लागतात. तेंव्हा ते कसे जमेल ? हे येणारा काळच ठरवेल.
• एकतर माझ्या पिढीचे लोक निवृत्तीच्या काळात भ्रमंतीचे बेत आखत असतात. हेच मुळात चुकीचे आहे. शारीरिक स्वास्थ्याबरोबरच निवृत्तीनंतर जवळ शिल्लक राहिलेले पैसे यावर आपल्या पिढीची भ्रमंतीची स्वप्नपूर्ती अवलंबून असते. ज्यांची मुले परदेशात आहेत त्यांना एक संधी मिळू शकते.
• माझा मुलगा देखील नोकरीनिमित्त जपानमध्ये असल्याने मला जपानमधील प्रमुख शहरांना भेट देण्याची संधी मिळू शकेल. त्यादृष्टीने मी आत्तापासूनच स्वप्न बघायला सुरुवात करतोय. मुलगा सोहम हा वास्तव्यास असलेले जपान मधील हमामात्सू शहर, टोकियो यासह तिथल्या निसर्गरम्य आणि ऐतिहासिक शहरांची माहिती आणि अभ्यास करतोय. सगळ्यात महत्वाचे तिथल्या भाषेचा अभ्यास करणे महत्वाचे आहे. निदान जुजबी संवाद साधता येईल एव्हढी जपानी भाषा समजली तरच भ्रमंतीचा काहीतरी फायदा होईल. तसं तर मला शेक्सपिअरच्या देशाला देखील भेट द्यायची आहे.
• शेवटी एक गंमत सांगतो, लहानपणी मला एक स्वप्न सारखं पडायचं. स्वप्नात मी एका निर्जन बेटावर माझ्या पंखांवर चिकटलेल्या मिठाच्या थरांना झटकून, खरवडून काढतोय, मग काही विश्रांतीनंतर पुन्हा आकाशात झेप घेतोय. स्वप्नंच ते….काय अर्थ असेल बरं त्या स्वप्नाचा…?
