What colleges have you attended?

It is said that school education introduces you to knowledge, while college education empowers the wings of youthful energy aiming to transform life. A rough blueprint of what you want to do in the future takes shape in your mind during your college years. Destiny shows us many winding roads of highs and lows in life. Even if we accept, for a moment, that destiny determines who we will become, the dream of shaping one’s life begins during college days. That is why, even after 38 years, I vividly remember my college days.

• My father worked in a sugar factory, and for better salary hikes and promotions, he would switch factories every 3–4 years. This resulted in our family relocating frequently, which had a significant impact on our education. Due to his job, my siblings and I couldn’t complete our education in a single place.
• In the academic year 1980–81, I completed my 10th grade at Tisgaon (Tal.- Pathardi) in Ahmednagar district. In 1981, I joined Pratishthan College in Paithan, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (then Aurangabad) district, for the 11th grade in the science stream. After completing my 12th there, I enrolled in 1983 at Deogiri College in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for a B.Sc. in Electronics. At that time, Electronics was a newly introduced subject in college education, and I chose it purely out of curiosity.
• Though I was a science student, I often skipped classes to spend time with arts students. During those magical days, I developed a keen interest in one-act plays and theater. To get opportunities to act in plays, I deliberately forged friendships with arts students.
• It was during this time that my awareness and appreciation of Marathi theater deepened. I also began contemplating independent scriptwriting. I started writing one-act plays and street plays. Initially, I was extremely anxious that my peers would mock the quality of my writing. Coming from a rural background, I was self-conscious about my incorrect pronunciation, limited knowledge of theater, and my modest lifestyle. These factors weighed heavily on me. However, with the support of my friends, I quickly overcame these insecurities, and my real journey into theater began with one-act plays.
• Even during my school days, I acted in plays during gatherings and even participated in children’s theater. But back then, it was just for fun.
• It was during those enchanting college years that I firmly decided to make a name for myself in the field of theater. Life later took me through many twists and turns, which I might share another time. For now, since we’re reminiscing about college, I must admit that even today, whenever I visit Paithan or Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for work, I make it a point to bow before the college gate. I know I won’t meet anyone familiar there anymore, but that sacred place has a deep connection with me—always.

“कॉलेज सोडून ३८ वर्षे झालीत, पण अजूनही ते दिवस आठवतात….!”

असं म्हणतात की, शालेय शिक्षण हे तुम्हाला ज्ञानाची ओळख करून देते, तर महाविद्यालयीन शिक्षण हे आयुष्य बदलवू पाहणाऱ्या युवाशक्तीच्या पंखांना बळ देते. तुम्हाला पुढे नक्की काय करायचं आहे ? याचा ढोबळ आराखडा हा महाविद्यालयीन शिक्षण घेतानाच मनात तयार होत असतो. नियती आपल्याला आयुष्यात अनेक चढ-उताराचे वळणाचे रस्ते दाखवत असते. आपण नेमके कोण होणार आहोत ? हे देखील नियतीच घडवून आणत असते, असं जरी आपण घटकाभर मानलं तरी आयुष्याबद्दल स्वप्न बघायची सुरुवात मात्र महाविद्यालयीन जीवनातच होत असते. म्हणून तर अगदी ३८ वर्षानंतरही मला महाविद्यालयाचे दिवस ठळकपणे आठवतात.

• माझे वडील साखर कारखान्यात नोकरी करत असल्याने वेतनवाढ आणि पदोन्नतीसाठी ते ३-४ वर्षात कारखाना बदलायचे. त्यामुळे बदलीच्या ठिकाणी कुटुंबाचे स्थलांतर व्हायचे. याचा परिणाम आम्हा मुलांच्या शिक्षणावर देखील व्हायचा. वडिलांच्या नोकरीमुळेच आम्ही भावंडे एकाच ठिकाणी आमचे शिक्षण पूर्ण करू शकलो नाहीत.
• मी १९८०-८१ या शैक्षणिक वर्षात अहमदनगर जिल्ह्यातील तिसगाव (ता.- पाथर्डी) येथून दहावी पूर्ण केल्यानंतर १९८१ मध्ये छत्रपती संभाजीनगर (त्यावेळचे औरंगाबाद) जिल्ह्यातील पैठण येथील प्रतिष्ठान महाविद्यालयात विज्ञान शाखेतून अकरावीला प्रवेश घेतला. तिथेच बारावी पूर्ण केल्यानंतर मी छत्रपती संभाजीनगर मधील देवगिरी महाविद्यालयात बी.एस्सी (इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स) साठी १९८३ मध्ये प्रवेश घेतला. अर्थात त्यावेळी महाविद्यालयीन शिक्षणात इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स हा विषय नव्यानेच अंतर्भूत झालेला असल्याने केवळ आकर्षणपोटीच मी त्या विषयाला प्रवेश घेतला होता.
• मी विज्ञान शाखेचा विद्यार्थी असलो तरी जास्त करून पिरियड बुडवून कला शाखेच्या विद्यार्थ्यांबरोबर फिरायचो. त्याच मंतरलेल्या दिवसात मला एकांकिका, नाटकाचे आकर्षण वाढले होते. आपल्याला नाटकात काम करण्याची संधी मिळावी म्हणून मी कला शाखेच्या विद्यार्थ्यांबरोबर मुद्दाम मैत्री वाढविली होती.
• माझ्या मराठी नाटकांबद्दलच्या जाणिवा याच काळात वाढल्या. याच काळात मी नाट्यलेखनाबद्दल स्वतंत्रपणे विचार करू लागलो. एकांकिका, पथनाट्य लिहायला सुरुवात केली. आपल्या लेखनाचा दर्जा पाहून इतर सहकारी आपली चेष्टा करतील ही भीती सुरुवातीला खूप वाटायची. कारण तसा मी ग्रामीण भागातून आलेला असल्याने माझे अशुद्ध उच्चार, नाटकांबद्दलची अर्धवट माहिती, माझे राहणीमान यासर्व बाबी मला दडपण आणायच्या. पण मित्रांच्या सहकार्याने त्या अवस्थेतून मी लवकर बाहेर पडलो. मग एकांकिकाद्वारे माझा खरा नाट्यप्रवास सुरू झाला. तसं शालेय जीवनात पण मी गदरिंगला नाटकात काम करायचो. बाल नाट्य देखील केले होते. पण ती गंमत होती.
• आपल्याला नाट्यक्षेत्रातूनच नावलौकिक मिळवायचा हे महाविद्यालयाच्या त्या मंतरलेल्या काळातच मनाशी पक्के केले होते. पुढे आयुष्यात अनेक वळणे मिळाली. ती गोष्ट पण कधीतरी सांगेन. आत्ता महाविद्यालयाचा विषय निघाला म्हणून अजूनही मी कामानिमित्त पैठण किंवा छत्रपती संभाजीनगरला गेलो तर कॉलेजच्या गेटला नमस्कार करून येत असतो. आता तिथे परिचयाचे कुणीच भेटणार नाही हे माहीत असते. पण त्या पवित्र जागेचा आपल्याशी परिचय असतो ना, म्हणूनच !
