“Renowned young artist Nitin Khilare”

What is the greatest gift someone could give you?

Being in journalism and theatre, there are often occasions of felicitation that are hard to refuse. On such occasions, one also has to accept the gifts given. (Generally, we journalists prefer to decline gifts and felicitation, whenever possible.) Among these, there are some gifts given with such love that they remain memorable for a lifetime.

          One such example is a sketch of me, drawn and gifted by my young artist friend, Nitin Khilare, on the occasion of my birthday. He also lovingly suggested using it as a logo for my blog, a suggestion I gladly accepted.

• The friendship between me and the young artist Nitin Khilare, who serves as an art teacher at Lokseva High School in Solapur (Maharashtra), began under unique circumstances. In 2018, on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, a special commercial supplement was planned for publication on February 19 by Naushad Shaikh, the Unit Head of Solapur’s Divya Marathi newspaper. This was his first major task after taking charge of the Solapur edition.
• The idea was to profile individuals in society whose work aligned with the principles of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Naushad Shaikh was not just a friend but also a former colleague of mine. At the time, I had taken a break from journalism, but upon his insistence, I decided to contribute to the supplement. During a meeting, the topic of creating a compelling cover design came up, and Naushad immediately contacted Nitin Khilare, inviting him to the office and entrusting him with the responsibility.
• At that point, I had no acquaintance with Nitin Khilare. Meeting him in person, dressed modestly like a teacher, I was unsure whether he could handle the task. However, Naushad was confident. Following his suggestion, Nitin discussed the concept of Shivaji Maharaj’s image with all of us, as it was a highly sensitive subject. Any mistake in the depiction could provoke public outrage, but Nitin’s portrayal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj turned out to be truly indescribable.
• From then on, it became a tradition for Nitin Khilare to create the cover artwork for the Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti supplements every year. This tradition continues to this day. Every January, during the second week, Nitin calls to discuss the content, a routine that has now become a habit.
• Through this collaboration, I had the privilege of witnessing Nitin Khilare’s remarkable work up close. From pencil sketches to watercolors, acrylics, oil paintings, and portraits, his art spans countless styles—enough to fill a grand art gallery. A young artist who has drawn global attention by participating in exhibitions in India and abroad, Nitin is a source of pride for all his friends.
• On my birthday, this admirable artist honored me by gifting me a sketch of myself. It speaks volumes about his generosity that he celebrated my special day by presenting me with such a heartfelt gift.

“चित्रकार मित्राने वाढदिवसाची भेट म्हणून दिले माझेच रेखाचित्र..!”

ख्यातनाम युवा चित्रकार नितीन खिलारे :-

पत्रकारिता आणि नाट्यक्षेत्रात असल्यामुळे अनेकवेळा नाकारता न येण्यासारखे सत्काराचे प्रसंग घडत असतात. अश्याप्रसंगी दिलेल्या भेटवस्तू देखील स्वीकाराव्या लागतात. (शक्यतो भेटवस्तू, सत्कार नाकारलेलाच बरे ! अशी आम्हा पत्रकारांची भूमिका असते.) त्यातही अशी एखादी प्रेमाने दिलेली भेटवस्तू देखील असते जी आयुष्यभर लक्षात राहते. माझे युवा चित्रकार मित्र नितीन खिलारे यांनी माझ्या वाढदिवसाच्या निमित्ताने माझेच रेखाचित्र काढून मला भेट म्हणून दिले. खास ब्लॉगवर लोगो म्हणून वापरण्याचा प्रेमळ सल्ला देखील मी मान्य केला.

• सोलापूरच्या (महाराष्ट्र) लोकसेवा हायस्कुलमध्ये कलाशिक्षक म्हणून सेवेत असणारा युवा चित्रकार नितीन खिलारे आणि माझी मैत्री होण्याला देखील एक निमित्त झाले. २०१८ साली छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज यांच्या जयंतीनिमित्त १९ फेब्रुवारी रोजी कमर्शियल पुरवणी प्रसिद्ध करण्याचे नियोजन सोलापूरच्या दै.दिव्यमराठी वृत्तपत्राचे युनिट हेड नौशाद शेख यांनी केले होते. सोलापूरच्या आवृत्तीचा कार्यभार स्वीकारल्यानंतर त्यांनी पहिल्यांदाच मोठा टास्क हाती घेतला होता.
• छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या कार्यपद्धतीला अनुसरून कार्य करणाऱ्या समाजातील गुणीजनांच्या कार्याचा आढावा पुरवणीत प्रोफाइल स्वरूपात मांडण्याचे ठरले होते. नौशाद शेख हे माझे नुसतेच मित्र नाही तर काहीकाळ सहकारी देखील होते. त्यावेळी मी काहीकाळ पत्रकारितेपासून दूर गेलो होतो. पण नौशाद शेख यांच्या आग्रहाने पुरवणीच्या निमित्ताने लेखनकार्य सुरू करण्याचे मी ठरवले.
• त्याचवेळी मुखपृष्ठ हे चांगल्या चित्रकाराकडून तयार करून घेण्याचा विषय मीटिंगमध्ये निघाला. नौशाद शेख यांनी लगेचच फोन करून चित्रकार नितीन खिलारे यांना ऑफिसमध्ये बोलावून घेतले आणि मुखपृष्ठाची जबाबदारी दिली. तोपर्यंत माझी नितीन खिलारे यांच्याशी साधी ओळख देखील नव्हती. अतिशय विनयशील आणि शिक्षकी वेशात भेटलेल्या नितीन खिलारे यांना हे काम जमेल का ? ही साशंकता मनात होती. पण नौशाद शेख हे निर्धास्त होते.
• नौशाद यांच्या सुचनेवरूनच नितीन खिलारे यांनी शिवाजी महाराजांच्या चित्राविषयी माझ्यासह सर्व सहकाऱ्यांशी चर्चा केली. कारण विषयच खूप संवेदनशील असा होता. चित्रात बारीकशी देखील चूक होणार नाही याची काळजी घ्यावी लागणार होती. नाहीतर लोकांच्या रोषाला सामोरे जाण्याचा प्रसंग देखील येवू शकतो याची भीती होती. पण नितीन खिलारे यांनी छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांची जी प्रतिमा रेखाटली ती अवर्णनीय अशीच होती.
• पुढे मग दरवर्षी शिवाजी महाराजांच्या जयंतीनिमित्त प्रकाशित होणाऱ्या पुरवणीचे मुखपृष्ठ चित्रकार नितीन खिलारे यांच्याकडून घेण्याचा सपाटा सुरू झाला. तो आजतागायत सुरू आहे. दरवर्षी जानेवारी महिन्याच्या दुसऱ्या आठवड्यात नितीन खिलारे यांचा कंटेंट विचारण्यासाठी फोन असतो. ही आता सवय बनत चाललीय.
• पुरवणीच्या कामानिमित्ताने मैत्री झालेल्या नितीन खिलारे यांचे काम किती मोठे आहे हे अगदी जवळून पाहता आले. अगदी पेन्सिलच्या रेखाचित्रापासून वॉटर कलर, अक्रालीक, ऑइल पेंट, पोट्रेट असंख्य प्रकारची तैलचित्रे अगदी एखादी मोठी आर्ट गॅलरी भरून जाईल एव्हढी चित्रे या कलाकाराने काढलेली आहेत. देश-विदेशात चित्रप्रदर्शनात सहभाग घेऊन जगाचे लक्ष आपल्याकडे वेधून घेणारा हा युवा चित्रकार आपला मित्र आहे हाच आम्हा सर्व मित्रांचा अभिमानाचा विषय आहे.
• ज्याचा आपण सन्मान करावा अश्या नितीन यांनी माझ्या वाढदिवसाचे निमित्त साधून माझेच रेखाचित्र मला भेट दिले. आपल्यालाच भेटवस्तू देऊन गौरवावे एव्हढा दिलदारपणा देखील नितीन खिलारे यांच्या अंगी आहे.
