When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I spent my childhood in a sugar factory colony. At that time, there was always some construction work going on in the colony. When I was about five years old, a new housing project had begun, creating large mounds of sand in the area.

For children like us, these sand mounds became our hills and valleys for playing cops and robbers. During Diwali, we used to buy toy pistols for bursting firecrackers, and later, we would use them while playing our game. Instead of real gunfire, we would make “Dishkaon!” sounds with our mouths, pretending to shoot.

According to our rules, after about 15 minutes of gunfire, the robber had to die. It was a thrilling game, full of imagination and excitement, making our childhood truly memorable.

The innocent dreams of childhood never turned into reality, but the memories are still fresh. Those sand mounds, the game of cops and robbers, and my childlike swagger still bring a sweet smile to my face.

🔴 As a Child, I Loved Playing a Police Inspector

We used to play cops and robbers every evening, and I always loved being the police inspector in the game. Once I stepped into the role, it was my duty to catch the thieves and punish them. We would climb the sand mounds, jump around, hide, and run swiftly. The game had a different kind of energy that kept us excited.

🔴 Fighting – The Most Thrilling Part of the Game

Fighting was an essential part of our game. When a thief was caught, he had to be punished—which meant he had to “die” in our game! Of course, it was just an imaginary punishment; we weren’t actually hurting anyone. But to make the game more thrilling, these rules were set. Sometimes, the thief would try to escape, but my friends and I would always chase and capture him again.

🔴 The Influence of Uniform and Discipline

At that young age, I truly believed that I would become a police inspector when I grew up. I felt immense joy in playing that role. Seeing real police officers in uniform always fascinated me. Their uniform, discipline, and commanding presence had a strong impact on me. That’s why I never missed a chance to play the role of a police inspector in our games.

“मोठे झाल्यावर मला पोलीस निरीक्षक व्हायचे होते…!”

माझं बालपण एका साखर कारखान्याच्या कॉलनीत गेलं. त्या काळात कॉलनीत सतत काही ना काही बांधकाम सुरू असायचं. मी साधारण पाच वर्षांचा असताना, कॉलनीत नवीन हौसिंग प्रोजेक्टचं काम सुरू झालं होतं. त्यामुळे तिथे मोठमोठे वाळूचे ढिगारे तयार झाले होते. आमच्यासारख्या लहान मुलांसाठी हे ढिगारे म्हणजे चोर-पोलीस खेळासाठी डोंगर-दऱ्या होते. दिवाळीच्या सणात टिकल्या उडविण्यासाठी घेतलेले पिस्तूल आम्ही चोर-पोलीस खेळात वापरायचो. तोंडानेच गोळी उडविल्याचा “ढिश्कँव” असा आवाज काढायचो. जवळपास १५ मिनिटे गोळीबाराचा खेळ झाल्यावर चोराने मरायचे असा आमचा नियम असायचा.

बालपणीच्या निरागस स्वप्नांना वास्तवाचं रूप मिळालं नाही, पण त्या आठवणी अजूनही ताज्या आहेत. ते वाळूचे ढिगारे, चोर-पोलीसचा खेळ आणि माझा बालसुलभ रुबाब आजही मनात एक गोड हसू उमटवतो.

🔴लहानपणी मला पोलीस निरीक्षक व्हायला आवडायचे :- आम्ही रोज संध्याकाळी चोर-पोलीस हा खेळ खेळायचो. या खेळात मला कायम पोलीस निरीक्षक व्हायला आवडायचं. मी पोलिसाच्या भूमिकेत शिरलो की, चोरांना पकडायचं आणि शिक्षा द्यायची जबाबदारी माझी असायची. आम्ही त्या वाळूच्या ढिगाऱ्यांवर चढायचो, उड्या मारायचो, लपायचो आणि झपाझप धावायचो. एक वेगळीच ऊर्जा असायची त्या खेळात.

🔴फायटिंग हा खेळाचा महत्वाचा भाग :-

फायटिंग हा खेळाचा महत्त्वाचा भाग असायचा. जेव्हा चोर पकडला जायचा, तेव्हा त्याला सरळ शिक्षा व्हायची – म्हणजे आमच्या खेळातला चोर “मरायचा”! अर्थात, ही फक्त कल्पनारम्य शिक्षा असायची. आम्ही कुणाला खरंच मारत नव्हतो, पण खेळाचा थरार वाढवण्यासाठी अशा गोष्टी ठरलेल्या होत्या. कधी कधी चोर पळून जायला बघायचा, पण मी आणि माझे मित्र मिळून त्याला परत पकडायचो.

🔴गणवेश आणि शिस्तीचा प्रभाव :-

त्या वयात मला खरंच वाटायचं की मी मोठा झाल्यावर पोलीस निरीक्षक होईन. त्या भूमिकेत मला खूप आनंद मिळायचा. त्या काळात पोलिसांना पाहून मी भारावून जायचो. त्यांच्या गणवेशाचा, त्यांच्या शिस्तीचा आणि त्यांच्या रुबाबदार व्यक्तिमत्त्वाचा मला प्रचंड प्रभाव पडला होता. त्यामुळेच मी खेळात पोलीस निरीक्षक होण्याची संधी कधीही सोडली नाही.
