“TV serials made youth more enriching…!”

What TV shows did you watch as a kid?

  • 📺
The journey of television in India is a story in itself. Although it began with experimental broadcasts in 1959, it truly reached households only after 1983. Since I was born in 1966, we did not have a TV at home during my childhood. At that time, the radio and local community entertainment programs were the only sources of recreation. It was only when I entered college that we got a TV at home. I still vividly remember the moment we bought a black-and-white TV in 1986. Around that time, television serials on Doordarshan started gaining immense popularity, and they left a deep impression on my mind.
👉 Even though there was no TV in my childhood, the serials I watched during my youth enriched my life. Those memories are still cherished in my heart.

1. The Late Arrival of Television

In my childhood, there was no television, so I never experienced the joy of watching TV shows as a kid. But because of that, I stayed closer to books, stories, and folk art. When a TV finally entered our home during my college years, it opened up a whole new world for me. I began to see television not merely as entertainment, but as a treasure of knowledge, ideas, and cultural experiences.

2. The Early Era of Serials

In the 1980s, the era of television serials began on Doordarshan. Lighthearted shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi won the hearts of viewers. With simple yet relatable storytelling, people felt as though their own lives were being reflected on the screen.

3. The Influence of Mythological Serials

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat created a spiritual and cultural atmosphere in every Indian household. On Sunday mornings, streets would be deserted as people gathered in front of their TVs to watch these epics. These shows instilled values of ideals, faith, and a sense of duty in my young mind.

4. A Glimpse of Social Realities

Serials like Tamas and Buniyaad portrayed the struggles of society, the pain of partition, and the complexities of human relationships. These shows went beyond mere entertainment and served as a form of social education. They compelled me to think deeply about history, society, and human values.

5. The Black-and-White Memories

The black-and-white television that entered our home in 1986 was not just a device—it was a treasure of emotions. Neighbors, relatives, and friends would gather at our place to watch programs together. That collective experience strengthened bonds of friendship, relationships, and togetherness.

6. The Impact of Serials on Me

The serials I watched in my youth shaped my worldview. The ideals of the characters, the social messages, and the historical contexts had a profound influence on my writing, thinking, and overall life. Television of that era was not merely entertainment—it was an important stage in shaping one’s personality.

Your journey beautifully captures an era when television was more than just entertainment—it was a cultural revolution. I truly admire how you turned the absence of TV in childhood into an opportunity to stay close to books and folk art. The way you described the impact of serials like Ramayan, Mahabharat, and Buniyaad shows how television once connected people, instilled values, and shaped perspectives. Those black-and-white TV days were indeed magical, not just for what we watched, but for the sense of togetherness they brought. Your reflections remind us of a time when content carried depth and purpose.
