So far, we’ve witnessed many epidemics, seen the devastation caused by natural disasters, and watched people die right before our eyes in horrific accidents. Yet, that sense of discomfort never returned until now. The deaths during the COVID era still haven’t faded from memory. The unease of losing friends, relatives, and many others won’t leave us for a long time. COVID is seen as the largest pandemic experienced by two generations. Nearly a century after the plague, this pandemic shook the world. The sheer devastation it caused is unparalleled; there might have been very few places spared. There’s no greater sense of discomfort than this.

• We learned about the severity of the smallpox and plague pandemics through books, as they didn’t occur in our time, so we never truly felt their intensity. Before COVID, several infectious epidemics had already wreaked havoc, but since there were medicines and treatments available, the medical system was quick to control them, and the general public never really felt their impact.
• Initially, people took the first stage of COVID very lightly. They assumed it was just another infectious disease, creating an environment where the virus could spread rapidly. Once COVID started spreading, the medical community realized that there was no “vaccine” to combat it from the root. As the first wave of COVID surged, many countries began efforts to develop a vaccine. However, more disturbing than the pandemic’s severity was the race to dominate the global pharmaceutical market. Under the guise of humanity, wealthier nations started pretending to supply vaccines to poorer countries, which couldn’t even afford to buy them.
• Seeing impoverished countries helplessly trying to save as many lives as possible was distressing. What frightened me more than the fear of death itself was the ugly reality of profiting from death. Even in my own city, until the vaccine supply stabilized, people were scrambling to buy vaccines at any price through the black market, despite the lockdown. The memories of that chaos are unsettling. Meeting many heads of families today, still in debt from trying to save lives, fills me with sorrow. I’ve never experienced such unease before.

“कोविड महामारी : सर्वात वेदनादायी आणि अस्वस्थतेचा काळ…!“

एखाद्या वेळेबद्दल सांगा, जेंव्हा तुम्हाला स्वतःला विसंगत किंवा गैरसोयीच्या ठिकाणी असल्या सारखं वाटलं.

आजवर अनेक साथी पाहिल्या. नैसर्गिक आपत्तीचे तांडव बघीतले. भीषण अपघातात जखमी झालेल्यांचे डोळ्यासमोर तडफडून मृत्यू झालेले पाहिले. पण त्या क्षणाची ती अस्वस्थता पुन्हा कधी जाणवली नव्हती. पण कोविडकाळात झालेले मृत्यू आज देखील डोळ्यासमोरून नाहीसे होत नाहीत. परिचित, नातेवाईक, अनेकांना गमावल्याची अस्वस्थता दीर्घकाळापर्यंत पिच्छा सोडणार नाही. दोन पिढ्यांनी आयुष्यातील अनुभवलेली सर्वात मोठी महामारी म्हणून कोविडकडे पाहिले जाते. प्लेगच्या महामारीनंतर जवळजवळ शंभर वर्षांनी जगाला हादरविणारी ही महामारी ठरली आहे. मृत्यूच्या तांडवातून एखादे बेट वाचले असेल एव्हढी भीषणता जगाने अनुभवली. यापेक्षा मोठी अस्वस्थता कोणतीच असू शकत नाही.

• देवीच्या रोगाची महामारी, प्लेगची महामारी याची भीषणता आपल्याला पुस्तकातून वाचल्यानंतर समजली होती. आपल्या काळात घडलेली नसल्याने त्याची दाहकता आपल्याला जाणवली नाही. कोविड पसरण्यापूर्वी देखील अनेक संसर्गजन्य साथीनी थैमान घातले होते. मात्र त्यावर औषध आणि उपाय असल्याने अशा संसर्गजन्य साथींना आटोक्यात आणण्यात वैद्यकीय यंत्रणेला लगेच यश मिळायचे. त्यामुळे जनसामान्यांना त्याची दाहकता कधी जाणवली नव्हती.
• सुरुवातीला कोविडच्या पहिल्या स्टेजला देखील लोकांनी खूप सहजतेने घेतले होते. इतर संसर्गजन्य साथींसारखीच ही साथ आहे या भ्रमात राहिल्याने कोविडची साथ वेगाने पसरायला पोषक वातावरण तयार होते. कोविड फैलावल्या नंतर वैद्यकीय यंत्रणेच्या लक्षात आले की, याचा मुळापासून प्रतिबंध करण्यासाठी आपल्याजवळ “लस” नाही. मग कोविडची पहिली लाट वेगात असताना अनेक देशांनी “लस” तयार करण्याच्या हालचाली सुरू केल्या. इथेही महामारीच्या भीषणतेपेक्षा जागतिक औषधी बाजारातील वर्चस्व प्रस्थापित करण्याची शर्यत अस्वस्थ करून सोडणारी होती. ज्या गरीब देशांची लस खरेदी करण्याची देखील ऐपत नव्हती, अशा देशांना मानवतेच्या नावाखाली लस पुरवठा करण्याचे ढोंग जागतिक पातळीवर सुरू होते.
• शक्य होतील तेव्हढ्या नागरिकांचे प्राण वाचविण्यासाठी लाचार झालेले गरीब देश पाहिल्यावर मृत्यूच्या भीतीपेक्षा मृत्यूच्या व्यापाराच्या किळसवाण्या व्यवहाराची जास्त भीती वाटत होती.
• अगदी माझ्या शहरात देखील लसीचा पुरवठा सुरळीत होईपर्यंत काळ्याबाजारातून वाट्टेल त्या किंमतीत विकली जाणारी लस मिळविण्यासाठी लॉक डाऊन असताना देखील जी जिवाच्या आकांताने पळापळ सुरू होती. ते दृश्य आठवले की अस्वस्थ व्हायला लागतं. जीव वाचविण्यासाठी कर्जबाजारी होणारे अनेक कुटुंबप्रमुख आजही भेटतात तेंव्हा गलबलून येते. एव्हढी अस्वस्थता मी कधीच अनुभवली नव्हती.
